《Soda Girls》 is a horizontal version of the cartoon action game, game player by setting their own unique combo, against crazy zombies, save companion. If you don't think the game is tough enough, you can upgrade the monster gene (What the hell?)

I kinda like the game, but it seems to have been abandonded for almost a year. It's around 80% and you can get to the end of the game, but it's definitely missing some parts. Get it on sale when it's less than $5 if you wanna try it.
Remember as kids we would usually choose a mainstream cartoon to watch religously yet there would always be a "close 2nd" as near and dear to our hearts that simply wasn't quite as "well known"? In other words, there is G.I. Joe then there's M.A.S.K.. There's Transformers then there's Go-bots. There's Thunder-cats then there's Silver-hawks. There's TMNT but then there's Street-sharks. There's Batman The Animated series then there's Disney's Gargoyles. Er,you get my point! Soda-Girls embodies the above conundrum. With iconic characters that look like they're the "cousins" of all-time-great gaming Divas like Tron Boone(with assisting mech),Samus Aran,Nightshade, and Jill Valentine it's obvious the developers are pretty honest about wearing their inspirations on their sleeves. Furthermore, the graphic style bears more than a slight semblance to Skull-girls.Viewtiful Joe, and some of our nostagic favorite kids shows from Cartoon-Network. None of this feels sloppy though as the little details and in-jokes show how much the developers cared when making this game. There's a difference between "entirely ripping off" an idea as opposed to being inspired by an idea and putting one's own twist/embelishment on it. Soda Girls fortunately does more of the later than the former. On the surface some might mistake Soda Girls to be a "mindless brawler" with some platforming segments in which you must navigate police-woman Jacey (Your first character in story-mode before you help to liberate Jacey's friends) thru small contained 2D danger zones of falling debris, electric panels, sinking foot-steps,and various exploding propane cannisters. Luckily these same hazards can be used againt the enemies too forcing you to strategize. Unlike other brawlers, enemies in Soda Girls come at you in smaller numbers though they tend to be a lot more formible. Aka a couple of zombie hippy girls or zombie weiner dogs can still ♥♥♥♥ your ♥♥♥♥ up if you go into a fight with bad timing. (Sorry I failed to mention there's a zombie apocolypse going on but now you know!) Bosses start off easy peasy but by the time I got to "The Cess-poll" there was a Junk-rat looking psychopath giving me issues as he eventually eats the huge mutton chop he's beating you with (restoring his health) THEN he brandishes a friggin shotgun that can fire in three directions. This means yeah, you'll probably have to grind to level up whilst farming for better weapons, farming more bottle caps to purchase additional perk-items (Or level them up as well), and pick up more attacks to mix and match in your various combo strings. I can see how some might get frustrated by this but for me it's just a chance to improve and loot which appeals a bit to my OCD-laden tendencies! Oddly enough, one character can even improve the performance of enemies. I'd advise against this until you're very skilled and prepared but if you want greater risks and greater rewards the oppertunity is definitely there. Furthermore, reviewers that complain there's only one attack button miss the point. Aka the whole appeal of soda-girls is unlocking "new attacks" that you can place in any sequential order on one of three equipped plan sheets. Yes, you are pressing one button rapidly to do combos but those attacks are ones you can put into any order you want. This once again plays into the strategy of the game as you'll need to experiment with the sequential order of different moves to get the best and flashiest results. I feel as if people out there read a few bad reviews about Soda Girls being a "mindless button masher" and never bothered to clarify whether that was true or not. It's really not and the challenge always feels "just right" though if you're in a jam all the characters can be "leveled up" and also be equipped with additional charms and ornaments that can increase strength, speed, immunity to certain kind of attacks, and even the rate at which you attain bottle caps (currency) or experience points. The only qualm I can level against Soda Girls is it's still an early acess game though in its' defense it seems to be an early acess game that's "almost" done. Aka, there's already a lot there but the developers have talked about adding more characters and more stages. I'm hoping they do just that though I understand how it can be discouraging to put together such a good game only to have it be a "flash in the pan" as far as its' public impact is concerned. Aka, I feel with the right marketing and the right e-celebs doing let's plays Soda-Girls would have really "taken off" as it taps into that same nostalgia as Skull girls,Viewtiful Joe, and Senran Kagura. Pros +Good cast of unique characters + Nice colorful and outlandish "punk noir" enemy designs + You get to custom create your own combos + Levels tend to be well designed with a decent balance of enemies and environmental hazards. (Which if you're smart enough can be used to your own advantage. Kicking a propane tank into a pile of slumbering zombies is always fun!) + Appealing art style + Is deeper and more layered in complexity than it initially seems + Injected "something new" into the beat-em-up genre which is not something I see done too often Cons -It can be easy to get caught up in "cheap juggles" from multiple foes. - Some bugs remain. In one area I could literally "walk on air" and I'm sure that was not intended. - Still "early acess". We can only hope the developers are stalwart enough to see this one through and finish their work. - Soda Girls had a "flash in the pan effect" which may have discouraged its' creators even more. Still, a somewhat recent update suggests not all hope is lost!
Moderately fun beat-em-up game. There are some level up items, but this game is mostly focused on selecting different fighting animations. Put together a series of fight moves, that will trigger in sequence as you press attack repeatedly. New fight moves unlock through enemy drops. There was a lot that I liked about the game, such as the music and the art style. There is a lot more narrative than I expected, with the NPCs getting their own levels and fight sequences. Otherwise, the gameplay is repetitive, one level looking just like most others, with only attack-style unlocks to add any flourish. I also had trouble mastering the attack timing, and I seldom pulled off a successful block. Be aware that only the police girl is available at the start of the game, and 40% of owners never unlock any additional fighters. I slogged through a bunch of levels, hoping there would be some payoff, but even after unlocking the store and a new set of levels, it was just more of the same. There was never excitement about a new level, a new trinket, or a new unlocked combat skill. I enjoyed this game on Ubuntu Linux 18.10 & 19.10, with radeon mesa graphic drivers, and a xbox-stle gamepad controller. Technically, this game will not windowed-mode, and it has problems with keyboard-mouse controls. This game uses the Unity game engine. At full price, I think there is a lot of fun to be had here. This is a nicely polished game with a lot of extras, even though you will probably only play for a couple of hours.
I love the cartoon style characters each with their own unique abilities. Smooth gameplay and smash em up fighting . The game is not too short and not too long . Each character is fun to play with. Great unlockables as play progresses. Great mix and match fighting styles for each character. All good things . I never experienced any type of bug or problem and i'm almost 20 hours in right now . Ok .. now for the challenges 1-9. It's definitely challenging and not for the impatient. A few of them took less than an hour while most took multiple hours through trial and error and perfect timing to complete. One of my favorite games . I play with Eve the most (love her specials) . Thanks for creating this game team .
It's clear to me the developers could've made a better game, but didn't think to somehow. There's DNA for a Guardian Heroes type game, since all the environments are 3D and enemies can jump out of the background at times. The developers seemingly put more thought into how the enemies will mess you over than how to make the game fun. There's a level where they introduce electrified floors and in that same level place two enemies that will knock you into a floor above you so you get stunlocked. This game is like "Sugar-Free" Soda, it doesn't taste as good and the sweetener is probably worse for you, may as well get something with sugar.
Really cool character designs and animation aside, I really have to question the game design choices. Some would have you believe that this game is hard but fair, that would be the furthest thing from the truth. Some enemies have super armor with absolutely no counterplay to them. Some enemies just have unavoidable random attacks and can't be taken out without damage trading. Money system is grindy and doesn't feel particularly rewarding. Also, I'm not sure if it's just the particular controller setup I have, but I couldn't get the game to reassiign buttons properly. I use an old Radio Shack PS2 to PC converter, and I was forced to play the game with Triangle as jump and X as attack, which was monumentally uncomfortable. I got used to it eventually, but the above design flaws just kind of stuck with me. I think what they were going for here was a River City Ransom kind of vibe, but other than the characterful animations, it just kind of falls flat. Take a pass on this, you're not missing much. Note that I hope the devs learn from the problems this game has, and release a better, more balanced product in the future, and if they do, I would buy it in a heartbeat. Theres a lot of love here for thier project, it just feels like it was put in the wrong places.
I have 12.4 hours registered in the time of this review. 4 characters unlocked and 2 still locked and all available stages at the moment finished with the first girl. And I'm having a blast. In short It's a beat'em up, hard as ol beat'em ups used to be, with lots of personalization and some rpg strokes. Choose your Soda Girl (tm), choose weapon skin, character skin, stage and fight! From fighting you'll be getting caps, with caps you can buy and choose upgrades for your girl (+hp, +damage, faster attacks, faster movement, hp recovery, inmunity, more exp, more caps, ....... SO MANY COMBINATIONS). You'll also get sometimes gifts, gifts can contain huge amounts of caps, weapon or character skins, +hp or +soda upgrades. Each girl has a max of 27 attacks, you'll choose 5 in the order you like to create your own combo. you'll have 4 main buttons: Attack, Jump, Dodge and Drink Soda to heal. You may think, then all I have to do is hit Attack all the time and that's it. But no. This game is hard. Each enemy is different in it's own way and attacks. You'll need to know their patterns and best way to hit them without dying in the process. And you'll die, a lot. There's a death counter in your save file so you can see how much of a noob you are. #goodtimes As I said you can level up and upgrade yourself and there will be a moment you'll be a lil overpowered. BUT you also have a section to upgrade your freaking enemies ((NGH~ YES HARDER PLEASE)). They change aspect with each upgrade, thing I find really neat. So, with all this said. Right now it's an Early Access Game. And I'll probably play more than 25hours as it is right now. The devs are working hard in the UI, combat, solving bugs and adding new characters and stages. (you also have challenges, really unique ones). so, PROS: - Art and character design superb, graffity/panty&Stocking style. 10/10 - Different levels, a sinking port, being chased by a tank-train, Elevator, moving raft, ... - Customization everywhere. Main characters, weapon skins, upgrades, make enemies stronger one x one - lots of unlocks that keep you motivated on going and going. - Variety of enemies, each one with their own strategies - Good number of playable characters each one with a unique fighting style. Maze, Mecha/robot dog, katana, laser, knives, fists,... - The right ammount of difficulty, making you sometimes farm a little to get stronger and beat that boss. "CONS" (most of them because, you know, right now IT'S EARLY ACCESS, you know what u're getting into, will update when it's finished): - You'll find some bug here and there. They're getting fixed. - Lacks a little explanation about things, you need to figure out by yourself what "X" thing does. - It would be nice to have some story between the characters, when rescuing/unlocking them and such. Would give them more personality/lore. And psst, that sells. - Using a controller, inputs get a little laggy in some stages. With keyboard they don't. But you can get thorugh it upgrading your attack speed. It needs fixing though. So, if you are like me and loved the simpsons arcade, golden axe, streets of rage, turtles lost in time, captain commando and Gekido. And even more if you like cool designs, you're gonna love this game. This one deserves more attention and I'm glad I'm supporting the devs into making a great finished game.
