"Snowpainters" is a student project from the SMU Guild Hall, except it looks suspiciously like a reskin of Tux Racer if you ask me. Anyway, when your student project compares badly to FOSS demo games, you know you're gonna have a bad time. Like Tux Racer, you're sliding down a hill. There's a gimmick with different colours, whatever. It's not a lot of fun at the end of the day. And not worth downloading. The graphics in this game are passable, but could be better. And while it's vital for any game to have impressive visuals (gaming is a visual medium, after all), there's more to a game than just the graphics. To be worth a gamers time, the game must match top tier visuals with top tier gameplay, and that's not happening here. You're forced to sign a highly questionable yet legally unenforceable End User License Agreement... for such a relatively low effort, low quality product, this comes across more as a delusion of grandeur than anything else. This agreement includes questionable requirements that may attempt to revoke consumer law protections that gamers expect to have, which is also highly problematic. Developers must learn they are here to serve gamers, not control them. I had my cat walk over the keyboard while the EULA was displaying, which fixed that problem for me. On the matter of pricing and value for gamers, most "free" games on Steam aren't really free. There's often nasty mobile app cash shops, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, or any other number of shady pricing schemes that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game. Nothing demonstrates a developers belief in themselves and their work than giving it away without any remuneration. This is a service to themselves, and the gaming industry, and should be applauded. Of course, just because something is free, doesn't necessarily mean it's valuable, or something you might want to spend your time on. Even though this is "free", it failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at just a dozen or so concurrent players, and now there's basically nobody playing it. Even though it's free. This is a dismal public reception, but it's easy to see why gamers rejected it. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Not this time. This isn't worth downloading. While this won't cost you any money, you get what you pay for, and sometimes, even when the game is free, it's still not enough.

Snowpainters ist an sich ja eine niedliche Idee: Eine Art Mario Kart mit Pinguinen mit einem Farbtwist. Unterwegs sammelt man nämlich Farben ein, mit denen man die Eisfläche färben kann. Rutscht man dann später über diese Fläche während man die gleiche Farbe aktiviert hat, bekommt man einen Boost. Das ist in der Theorie eine coole Zusatzidee. In der Theorie... Praktisch scheitert das Ganze am chaotischen Gameplay. Es ist ja schön und gut, taktisch vorgehen zu können. Dafür aber ist das Ganze zu wild. Zumal die Steuerung zwar ok, aber eben auch nicht hochpräzise ist. So rutscht man eher einfach irgendwie durch den Level und versucht irgendwie vorne zu bleiben. Grundsätzlich kann das ja einen ziemlichen Appeal haben. Hier springt der Funke jedoch irgendwie nicht über. Das Ganze ist zu wild und lässt sich nicht so steuern, wie man will. Es sind letztlich zu viele Ideen auf einmal. Dazu kommt, dass die Grafik alles andere als wunderhübsch ist. Fazit: Nette Idee, nett gemacht, aber in der Umsetzung dann doch mit zu vielen Schwächen, so dass ich trotz des "kostenlos"-Preisschilds keine Empfehlung abgeben kann.

It's... fine. Snowpainters is an interesting game. The main gimmick of the game is simple, yet very clever: You can paint the world and use paint to solve fun puzzles and find secrets. The soundtrack ranges from fine to amazing, Lena Raine is a very talented music composer. At times, the story can actually be engaging and emotionally resonant. For me, that's where the positives end. The concept of painting your surroundings, although original and, at first, quite engaging, quickly ends up being a chore. The world is a blank canvas, meaning that almost all the areas are entirely white when you visit them. Coloring each and every area takes time, especially if you want the places you visit to actually look visually pleasant. You're faced with a choice: You either take your time to paint everything (there is a LOT to paint) to make the game look good, hastily paint every place just so you don't have to stare at a white screen or leave the game mostly white and get an eye strain. Maybe the devs should've implemented an auto-paint mode, although it defeats the entire premise of the game. Point is, the visuals are hard to look at unless you take your time to paint every nook and cranny. Most of the characters are painfully bland and/or superficial. Everyone constantly praises you for everything you do, for everything you paint, even if it's terrible. In this game's world, there's nothing vile, no one with bad intentions, everyone is just painfully bland and have nothing interesting going on for them. The only characters that have the audacity to say something bad about you are put to shame by everyone else, and/or redeemed. The admiration other characters have for you feels incredibly disingenuous, you can literally submit blank canvases of "art" and everyone will insist that your work is unbelievably good. You can smear the same color of paint everywhere and the others will say they love how you painted the place. It's all just fake praises and "wholesomeness" from shallow caricatures of people. What irks me the most about Snowpainters is the way it portrays mental health problems, particularly that of depression. The level of understanding of such a complex issue that so many people have is almost child-like, although very few games do it right. According this game, it all boils down to having a stressful time and being too hard with yourself, and can be cured simply by taking a break, talking about it to someone and hugging it out. It's a generic, narrowed down approach to an issue that manifests itself very differently for different people. As someone who's been dealing with clinical depression for many years, although I could relate at times, I felt like the oversimplification of this mental illness is almost insulting (particularly, when Chicory is portrayed as an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ for lashing out at you while having a breakdown). No offense to the developers, I'm sure they had good intentions, but this approach doesn't feel right. Snowpainters is not, by any means, a bad game. It has its highs and lows and it might be considered amazing by some people. This is just my opinion based on my experience playing this game. I recommend this game if you are: - A kid; - An aspiring artist looking for encouragement (FYI, this game teaches you nothing about drawing and art); - Looking for a relaxing game to wind down; - New to playing video games. Otherwise, I don't recommend this game. Sorry
