Snowman Mo

The story and adventure of Mo was amazing. I was torn between wanting to see what happens next and trying to save more of the story for the next day. I've played through the game once, and plan on playing through again with each member of my family. The visuals are incredible, the gameplay is balanced and just the right amount of challenging, and it is fun for our entire family.

I got a copy for free, but this game is honestly a real treat and well worth the price. It's cute, funny, and actually plays VERY solid in terms of the combat and controls for exploring. I wasn't expecting much going in, but I'm glad I did because the game pleasantly surprised me. I just wish I had heard about it sooner. EDIT: Just beat the game and it's just awesome from start to finish. Buy it now.

Snowman Mo ist ein sympathisches kleines Abenteuer über einen Schneemann, der versucht, seine Schöpferin zu finden und sie vor bösen Bullies zu beschützen. Und es ist wohl eines der besten Beispiele für ein Spiel, das mit seinen Stärken so viele Pluspunkte sammelt, dass ein Teil der Schwachpunkte in den Hintergrund rückt. Die grösste Stärke ist dabei auf jeden Fall die tolle Geschichte. Sie wird zwar nur in Textfenstern erzählt, aber trotzdem schafft das Spiel mit tollem Writing, dass einem die Figuren richtig ans Herz wachsen. Und es erzählt eine wunderbare, herzerwärmende Geschichte, die immer wieder auch mit netten, humorvollen Einlagen aufwartet. Mit drei bis vier Stunden Spielzeit hat es zudem genau den richtigen Umfang für diese Art von Spiel. Und vor allem: Es ist eine wirklich runde Geschichte, was ja leider längst nicht immer selbstverständlich ist. Zur gelungenen Atmosphäre trägt auch die knuffige und sehr stimmige Low-Polygon-Grafik bei. Klar, optisch dominiert Schnee und entsprechend sind viele Umgebungen weiss und winterlich ohne riesige Abwechslung. Aber gestört hat das nie wirklich. Auch der stimmungsvolle Soundtrack passt gut. Ein zweischneidiges Schwert ist dagegen das Gameplay. Zum einen navigiert man durch geradlinige Levels, zum anderen kommt es immer wieder zu Kämpfen mit Bullies, die man mit Schneebällen bewirft oder einfach überrollt. Das macht ordentlich Spass, auch wenn die Steuerung manchmal etwas fummelig ist. Dank sehr fair gesetzter Checkpoints und einem moderaten Schwierigkeitsgrad ist das aber völlig in Ordnung. Richtig nervig ist dagegen die Fortbewegung durch die Levels. Der Schneemann bewegt sich nämlich unglaublich schwammig. Und das ist offensichtlich ein bewusster Effekt, weil man auf Schnee unterwegs ist. Auf den wenigen Passagen ohne Schnee ist die Steuerung deutlich präziser. Trotzdem bleibt es für mich eine eher dumme Designentscheidung, weil es – vor allem in diesem Ausmass – einfach nur ärgerlich ist, wenn man wieder einmal in den Abgrund rutscht, weil der Schneemann nicht schnell genug bremst. Das sorgt definitiv für Abzüge beim Spielspass und wäre in vielen Fällen fast schon ein Todesurteil für ein Spiel. Zum Glück wird das hier durch die fairen Checkpoints stark abgefedert und dann durch die tolle Geschichte mehr als wettgemacht. So bleibt dieser Schwachpunkt im Rückblick eher ein Nebengedanke, während die sympathische Geschichte klar im Vordergrund steht. Bleibt noch ein weiterer Schwachpunkt, der für mich persönlich allerdings keine Rolle spielte: der Preis. Mir wurde das Spiel freundlicherweise vom Entwickler zur Verfügung gestellt, aber es ist durchaus ein Spiel, das es wert ist, etwas dafür zu bezahlen. Allerdings finde ich 14.50 CHF dann doch deutlich zu viel und ich würde persönlich nie so viel dafür ausgeben. Aber das ist letztlich eine höchst individuelle Entscheidung. Vielleicht gibt es das Spiel ja einmal mit einem ordentlichen Rabatt. Dann ist es den Kauf auf jeden Fall wert. Fazit: Ein Spiel mit mühsamer Steuerung, die aber durch die faire Spielgestaltung und vor allem die tolle Geschichte mehr als wettgemacht wird. Für jeden, der auf sympathische und humorvolle Geschichten steht, eine klare Empfehlung.

This game is so cute!! The characters are adorable, the story and environment are super charming, the music is bopping, and the game was clearly made with love. This is a perfect Christmas gift for kids with enough humor to keep adults entertained too (caught myself blurt laughing throughout the game). Highly recommend!!

IF YOU DON'T PLAY SNOWMAN MO, THEN F#%* YOU.

Adorable game with memorable characters and gameplay. Does "cozy" way better than Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Intuitive, tight gameplay. Sherbert is the bravest.

I started by playing through the demo which was so sweet and charming that I couldn't help but fall in love with the game. This is a really cute adventure story with a wholesome message and a silly narrative that never feels weak or pointless. It earns every moment and you'll find yourself charmed the whole time playing it.

A funny and cute game that always manages to leave you with a smile.

This is adorable on a general level--you're a cute snowman who makes friends with kids and penguins and defeats evil via snowball fight--but it's also quietly smart about poking at prejudice and how much grief and fear can twist you if you don't deal with them. Was not expecting a Solid Life Lesson at the end of a game of an animated snowman, but here we are. Gameplay-wise, I'm not wild about the fact that all controls are locked and it's a beast of a thing to find them again past the tutorial (so don't forget the moves because you can't really look them up). And the aiming mechanism was rough via trackpad, although it would likely be fine with a detached mouse. Other than that, the somewhat clunky animation is endearing and there are a ton of nooks and crannies in which to explore Easter eggs and a B-plot button hunt. A lot of fun to play and a lot of great characters to meet.

It's sad to say, but I fear I would have never heard of Snowman Mo had I not received a review copy from the devs. I'm so glad that I got to experience it in all it's weird, charming, and kooky glory. Pros: - The dialogue, story, and humor are very well written. I had many laugh out loud moments alongside times where I felt some genuine emotion for these lil guys. - The "combat" is fun to play and isn't too easy nor too tricky - The game is definitely short, but that makes it feel like it doesn't overstay its welcome. I feel if it was too much longer, the gameplay maybe would have felt tedious. Cons: - The graphics are very early 3DS feeling, which isn't my personal favorite. There isn't anything particularly wrong with them, and they get the job done, but they just didn't really jive with me. - The physics are a bit slippery. Yessss, I know these guys are made of ice, but that can be a bit frustrating to have as an ever-present mechanic. It's harder to make platforms or even to make a sharp turn in combat. - From what I can see, there is no way to go back into the world once you've beaten the story. Soooo if you miss collectables, sorry pal, you're running another playthrough. - Unless I missed it or it will be resolved in a future game, the "mystery" of the game is never really explained. It's present frequently throughout the story, but I finished the main line and still have no clue what it means. All in all, Snowman Mo is super charming and a great Sunday afternoon title to play in the dead of winter with a cup of cocoa.
