Just like the first game, this is a very relaxing and beautiful game. Not only are the graphics upgraded, but a lot of content from the previous game has been expanded on. This includes new slimes, new environments, music, gadgets, and just more general things to do. It still has simple gameplay mechanics, despite this game being one huge expansion on the original. The new and improved build mode is perfect, allowing you to build wherever you want instead of in pre selected areas. This adds far more decoration options than the first game. Some of the new slimes are cool and unique, along with the largos. Rainbow Island is a cute new set piece you can explore, along with new environmental weather features. It was crazy to see things like a tornado in Slime Rancher 2. Achievements are simple and easy, which is always nice. Something else that was great to see was an actual final boss. While I love Slime Rancher 1’s ending, it was still neat to see something new added to the series. Some of the only issues I have are with the dialogue. In the first game, I would read all or most of the dialogue because it was well written and interesting. I’m not saying it isn’t well written here, but in Slime Rancher 2, most of the dialogue feels generic, and the characters don’t play important roles like they used to. They mainly just give you gifts and say generic lines, making it better to just spam click through the dialogue. Another issue is the new upgrade system. In Slime Rancher 1, you would simply buy upgrades, but in this game you have to craft them. That’s not bad at all however, most upgrades feel unnecessary. Stuff like the jetpack is important, so I would definitely craft that. But things like the Tank Guard, to me, aren’t very useful at all, and I wouldn’t consider crafting them. Despite those two small issues, this is definitely a great game, and I loved playing it.
crashes every 20 minutes on my 4070 Ti with medium settings. I love this franchise but my word this is ridiculous
Too similar to the first game, in fact I find it easier to just start up a new save in the original game than to muster motivation to play this sequel. It lost the "magic" the first one had. There is more "grind" with less of the vibe that made the original so fun for me. Other reviews hit on this odd feeling, like it's missing something but hard to pin down what that is. I just defer to "it lost it's magic" and the original is still a blast to play
I loved the first Slime Rancher game so much, I bought it three times across different platforms. So when I heard there was a sequel coming out, I was thrilled! Imagine my disappointment when instead of an actual sequel, I launched this game to find it was a worse clone of the first. Half of the slimes are the same as the first game. The resource gathering is worse in every way, the map is confusing and unnavigable, and after the beautiful love story in the first game between the main character and her long distance partner, I'm supposed to accept that our main character just... Up and went to yet another planet? It cheapens the emotional weight of the first one to the point where I don't even care to get into the plot of this one. My biggest complaint by far is the lack of multiplayer. When the first game grew in popularity, that was the number one request from the community, to add multiplayer. Even just local multiplayer, if online wasn't doable. So when they made a second game, they chose to ignore the biggest request from the community and make a game that is a bad copy of the first. All in all, this game isn't worth purchasing in my opinion. I'd stick to the first game, unless you enjoy wandering aimlessly and grinding for meager rewards. All love and respect to the devs, but I'm just so disappointed.
This could, and should, have been an overhaul and DLC for the first game. It doesn't change enough to be worth a full release, along with being less stable and more annoying. It can't handle nearly as many entities as the first game. The new ranch expansions are sprawling and too far apart, even further apart than the first game. The UI is a step down. The Vacpack is TERRIBLE, the stupid thing is so finnicky that it will stop working if you even think about moving your mouse while trying to do anything; if it doesn't think it can detect something within an inch of its end it just won't do anything at all no matter how many times you click and hold; it stops sucking once it thinks it has sucked up what you were looking at even if there's more stuff AND you keep holding; and it doesn't even always bother fully sucking up what it does detect - it's just awful. The update to how sleeping works is quite nice, though.
i love this stupid game
Worth playing if you enjoyed the original, but I really do not understand the change in direction they took with regards to slime science. In Slime Rancher slime science is more of an add-on--a way to optimize your ranching, with ranching itself being the main focus and the main vehicle by which the user progresses through the game. Slime Rancher 2 is the opposite; slime science gadgets are now essential to advancing the story, which is not only mechanically but thematically centered around slime science moreso than ranching. Farming slimes is necessary insofar as you need certain plorts and money to make the gadgets that are necessary to progress, but ranching often feels less like the central draw of the game and more like a side grind you need to do to optimize your progress towards the game's actual goal (building more gadgets). Moreover, because resources have to be gathered manually for a large portion of the game, I often spend more time running around vaccing up jellystone or lava dust than doing anything slime-related, and I'm often forced to sacrifice inventory space that I would rather use for ranching tasks like gathering slimes or plorts, because I need the resources and refinery links are expensive. This is a bizarre direction to take for a game that is literally titled "Slime Rancher". I also think locking upgrade components behind treasure pods for both essential and convenience slime science upgrades was a mistake. The collectibles in the first game were nonessential, offering some nice decoration items, extra resources, and sometimes useful utility blueprints, encouraging players to look for them without feeling like they're missing out on too much if they don't find them all, and providing a reasonable challenge for achievement hunters. Turning that into an essential game mechanic feels like such a cheap, artificial way to add friction to the game progression. Maybe it's supposed to encourage the player to explore more, but many of the pod locations are so tricky that I think it fails to facilitate exploration in an organic way, instead encouraging very systematic scouring of the terrain. I also wish they had differentiated the pod sound effect more from the emissions made by radiant ore and jellystone, because that has been a frequent point of confusion and frustration for me. Slime Rancher 2 also introduces a bunch of graphical "upgrades" that gave me a bunch of performance issues. My rig is not very new, so there's only so much I can reasonably complain about on that front--but, to be fair, I also think a lot of the graphical changes are ugly. I'm so incredibly sick of how many games keep desperately chasing that uncanny, shiny, Unreal Engine (TM) look, with tons of bloom and motion blur and making sure you can see the movement of each individual blade of grass. And it feels terribly out of place in this game. I can think of few games which needed chromatic aberration and dramatic motion blur less than Slime Rancher 2. I just can't understand it. I turned most of the extra shiny visual stuff off within 5 minutes of starting the game, and I found the visuals much better for it, but even then I still experienced a lot of stuttering and frame drops, particularly in the Grey Labyrinth. The core of the game is still similar enough to the original that I enjoyed it. I largely like the new slime types; the environments are very pretty; the soundtrack is amazing; and I enjoy the weather mechanics. I'm not finished with the main story yet, but I'm sort of ambivalent to it so far (but I do think adding
dialogue bits for Beatrix in her conversations with Gigi
was entirely unnecessary). Overall I'm having fun. But some of the design decisions for this installment make for disappointing changes to an otherwise solid foundation.
