Better than the first in some aspects, worse in some. Don't go in expecting a 1:1 sequel of SR1 — it's very different. Resource collection is far more emphasized than SR1 to a fault. Farming is not very efficient nor is it rewarding in later stages of the game. Resource collection is oftentimes tedious to do as virtually everything in the game needs it, and ranching often interrupts that process, inflating your play time. Ranching was also somewhat mundane in SR1 but the game pivoted around that — recipes were weighted more towards plorts than materials. Otherwise, that's my only complaint. The game is very much like SR1 everywhere else. It's a similar experience, but the main mechanics have shifted their weight a little bit. If you go in as an explorer rather than a rancher, it might result in a better experience.
I struggle with this game. The entire time I played it I felt like I'm being pulled out towards the map in ways that feel arbitrary and a little tedious because everything has a bigger upfront cost. I don't feel satisfied with how inadequate my ranch is because I know how well I can automate and set up my ranch in the first game and it irritates me. However, I did get a burst of excitement when I saw some of the gadgets and portals on the blueprint store, only to realize that each of them require resources that I'M NOT EVEN ALLOWED TO KNOW once I get them. Not to mention some of the gadgets are so situational that I don't even understand why they exist even when I craft them. I take a break and watch a youtube video that talks about the game and my hopes are raised when I learned that the drones have improved and they can pickup resources, which would be huge because I want to optimize the ranch and take out some of the tedium of grabbing resources out in the wild which was starting to irritate me at this point because the resource nodes basically have to be memorized and grabbing them often turns into a lot of aimless wandering. So i run around and grab everything I need, ready to reach a level of automation that would relieve the pain points I've had with the game so far and dig into the exploration. Unfortunately, the drones in this game are only slightly better than the basic drone from Slime Rancher and much more expensive. The resource gathering radius is so small that I felt cheated. Not only that, but it only takes one set of ranch instructions and only affects one area of it at a time, despite supposedly being improved. You can't even change the instructions remotely, despite it being connected to your map and HUD, which could've been something that might've eased the sting of the letdown I felt as I tested this for the first time. I just feel like there's a lot of potential that isn't being met and the game expects you to grind harder for unlocks that don't feel worth it. I like how there's more to do/explore and that the game looks nice, but I can't shake the idea that it feels like it wouldn't be worth it to continue because the game can't live up to it's predecessor by trying to do too much with not enough.

Ive played the first slime rancher game and i loved it so much, this one I wouldn't call a "2" but a "DLC". Its fun for sure, but it feels much the same as the previous game, instead some parts are elaborated? Its fun that now the resources are something you pick up/harvest and run around instead of just planting a machine on the ground to get it (iirc). Otherwise, its the same ol' same, i was expecting something new out of this "Slime Rancher 2" since it has "2" written on it, thinking there'd be more different mechanics, different slimes...especially slimes + new environments. I think thats where the joy of Slime Rancher was, exploration and discovery like what others have said :) still a good game, but i wouldnt call it "2". I wanted more from this
