Fun game overall, I enjoy the art and story style. Combat is the game's biggest weakness and traps are unnecessarily brutal. Nearly every fight has a 100% lethality rate or leaves your party crippled while healing is very expensive. Overall, I think a few small changes would dramatically improve the game and make it a great gift. Loved the references and audio as well, very fun atmosphere while exploring.
Single Malt Apocalypse is a short form adventure story with JRPG elements that plays as much for muted comedy as it does for cosmic horror. One part Weird Tales, one part Lovecraft, it wears its influences on its sleeve while still managing to do something charming and original. The initial offering from one-person developer wilpuriarts, the game feels like an artful and considered first effort, I was instantly impressed with the level of polish in the pre-release version that I played. The story opens with Leonardo, a mustachioed detective from Sacramento who shows up in the the small mining town of Cinderbrook to help a distiller named Algernon with a unique problem: his latest batch of whiskey has gone bad…so bad that it’s glowing bright pink and causing bizarre physical psychological changes in anyone who consumes it. That’s it. That’s the story. Right now, you know if you’re in or not. With that situation in mind, the game doesn’t spell out too much beyond the initial premise, and the player is left to explore the mystery in a non-linear fashion free of quest logs, cumbersome tutorials, or bloated menus. Exploration is consistently rewarding, and I never lacked a thread to pull on to move the story forward. SMA created a genuine sense that I was conducting an investigation, checking in to the dozen or so areas around the town and finding barriers I would eventually be able to remove in logical ways. Great RPG game made with love and care. Gives a nostalgia trip back to old Final Fantasy and Earthbound types of games with lots to explore. The game is not perfect, it can be quite difficult and the combat is at times pretty simple, but after getting some companions and new skills it gets better. So it give it some time. Big plus on the plot and hidden messages found around the world. Playtime for me was about 4 hours so definitely worth couple bucks.
Cool old school game, with an interesting story and simple but cool music. I found combat a bit too punishing, but at least (unlike old school games) there are save files.
I got this game a while back for free, i forgot to leave a review, pretty good game. 48 minutes in, but still, the game is actually very good.
Single Malt Apocalypse is an apocalyptical execution of 90s-era RPG games. It is short, ill-designed and graphically disappointing one-man-developed product. It quite well captures all the design flaws we see in 90s games yet refuses to discard any one of those in favor of an actually interesting outcome. Storyline is silly and trivial. Bar some short moments, there's nothing to enjoy playing this game. Full review in Finnish https://www.pelikaista.fi/arvostelut/arvostelussa-single-malt-apocalypse/
