Sine Mora is a bullet hell, side-scrolling shooter with a twist. Time isn't on your side. Easy to play, yet difficult to master, its solid gameplay earns it a recommendation.
Why would I play this 11 year old game?
Bullet hell on a timer It's not your typical bullet hell title. To get more time, kill enemies fast. Get hit = lose time and power ups Move fast to re-collect lost power ups or they're gone within seconds. Difficult There are two difficulty settings: Normal, Challenging Even on Normal: you'll die a lot. As with any bullet hell, you'll need to familiarize yourself with each level's design, enemy spawn points, and boss weak spots. You'll keep coming back though! Use only your primary weapon to maintain your multiplier. Using your powerful secondary weapon or SloMo will reset the multiplier. It's challenging but fair: Any continues you lose is because you did something wrong, not because the game had a sudden spike in difficulty or threw a curve ball at you. Streamlined gameplay You can fast-forward everything that is not gameplay (cutscenes, dialogues, and even boss animations) Very fast load times. Elegant boss designs and fluid fights https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2971143197 Various worlds to fight in and nice visuals Like airborne above the sea, in the depths of the sea, in a droid factory, etc. This keeps things interesting. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2970775811 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2970778277 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2970779028 High replayability Because the levels are fairly short and fun. Four modes to choose from: Story, Arcade, Score attack, Boss training Generous 13 continues to make use of per run, and freedom to start from any of the 7 stages (chapters) of the story Helpful visual hints The game isn't about puzzles so it shows you straight away what to hit to beat the bosses and proceed. Extensive how-to section Helpful but it's faster to learn as you go. Just set your controls to what's more comfortable for you and blast away. If you were wondering, the language used in achievements is Latin. Sine Mora means Without Delay, a nice nod to both the story and the ingame SloMo mechanic.
Why wouldn't I though, really?
Bottleneck spots There's a few that can be very frustrating. Looking at this part in Stage III, the Aiborg Factory https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2970777132 The good news is there are only three such spots in the whole run, start to finish. Unprovoked SloMo Sometimes the game decides to force it (without consuming your meter) with no apparent trigger at all. Convoluted story It's about you fighting the Imperials, whoever they are, with time travel thrown in, and a hard-to-follow father-son story to boot. If it sounds unnecessarily complicated and a bit ridiculous, that's because it is. Character design feels weird. They pretty much look like anthropomorphic animals with undiagnosed eating disorders. Just weird. Grindy achievements Achievements are mostly military ranks, so the devs decided to make each one unlock only when the previous rank is unlocked first. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2971058584 Each of these consists of a list of tasks you must complete. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2971058596 Let me put it this way: I beat the game in 7 hours with only 2 out of 10 achievements; one of those I had to look up and intentionally die to get. On the other hand, a friend has dedicated 42 hours to it and is still 8 / 10. There's a point when achievements are just too much hassle and not worth it. I feel this is one of those times. Uninspired music score and mediocre sound effects In my experience, they were forgettable, unless you park your screen at the Menu and keep listening for the single track that sounds nice and I could only hear there. lol That's not how BGM works though.
Conclusion
Sine Mora is a fun, challenging and well-designed bullet hell shooter. Recommended for lovers of the genre and masochists alike. 7.5/10 Keep in mind that the original Sine Mora (this one) has better reviews than the remake Sine Mora Ex. P.S. Here's a concise guide for that pesky bottleneck part.

A arte é absurda. A história? Nota pessoal: 8.5/10
This is genuinely an exceptional game - in no little part thanks to its story - that is marred by a bad reputation and a controversial "life" system. Other reviews went into it already, but it's rather true: you get punished for playing badly and rewarded for playing well, feeling like you're fighting an uphill battle when you mess up and lose your power-ups. Then again, the (Hungarian) voice acting, flavor, artwork, worldbuilding and story in this game is superb. The story is a little hard to follow, but here's a few tips without any spoilers. You follow two seperate points in time. The first follows the amputee Ronotra Koss being "helped" through blackmail by Myryan Magusa and an AI GARAI 74/22876 to avenge his son; the second has you follow Akyta Dryad, leader of the Enkie resistance, assisted by Durak, Enkie noblewoman and Lynthe Ytoo, former imperialist. The way time is marked is mainly what makes it confusing: - Ronotra Koss' narrative starts in "circle" (= the game's years) 1380 IN and ends in circle 1517 IN - Akyta Dryad's narrative starts in circle 102 ET and ends in circle zero ET i.e. the "IN" or "Imperial Nir" counts UP from an unknown time whereas the "ET" or "Enkie Time" counts DOWN to a prophesied moment in time. You can piece the story together with these hints yourself by going through the story mode twice (if you beat challenge mode once, you unlock the alternative narrative for the true ending) and by leafing through the Encyclopedia (which you'll unlock after beating the story once). Note that Ronotra Koss' actions predate Akyta Dryad's - though time is its own character in this story. Do yourself a favour and give this a shot, get good at it, forgive its flaws and experience that great Hungarian voice acting and storywriting. WholeHEARTEDLY recommended! This game was bashed far too unfairly!
Do not buy this game if you want to play with a mouse! The faster you move the mouse the SLOWER your plane moves. Even the "EX" version does not solve this game breaking bug.
I am a 45 yo father, probably one of the oldest people playing this game. I am a single father to my Son, who is 14 now. My son got this game from his uncle, so we installed it on his computer and he started playing. By the end of the week he had 24 hours on this game. This was horrible for me, as it was already hard for me to find ways to spend time with my son, as he is always out with his friends or just watching YouTube. So I decided to make a Steam account and get this game to see if I could maybe play alongside him. I loaded into the game, picked my character and world and started playing but I was stuck on what you where supposed to do. I asked my Son for help and he hosted a game for me to join. I loved it as it was the best time I had spent with my Son since my wife had died. This game has ever since brought me and my son closer again and now we actually spend time together outside the house together as well. This game reminded me that there's fun to be had in everything, and it has brought both me and my Son many happy memories.
Played EX first, thought it was garbage. Played this after, think the same. Play Skyforce or Jets and Guns
pew pew! pew! pew pew! pew pew pew! Often frustrating, but somehow still quite generous. Wish the story of war and revolution clicked more for me, but hey not all games can have it all! pew pew! pew pew pew! pew!
