Recker:"They sure don't make them like they do back on Earth." Never took Recker to be into tentacles. Then again. Psyme is such a baddie. Would partner up with her for sure. Based Tomboy Alien!
This game is difficult to recommend, despite my love for it. It will open into a shmup with the player flying around a little blue jet. After beating the first stage, it becomes something like the original Zelda or Link to the Past for a bit, albeit with more story. Then another shmup stage. Then it takes a strange turn: you're back in Zelda mode, but you ALSO have random encounters like a classic turn-based RPG. But those random encounters are micro-shmup stages. That's the gameplay loop. The story is fun. Not deep, but entertaining. Complete with B-movie Scifi goodness. So why is it difficult to recommend? The random encounters break the game flow pretty harshly. Wayforward toned down the encounter rate, but I can imagine some people still getting frustrated with it.

Somehow missed this one back in the day, but what a cool combo of genres. It's half RPG, half overworld adventure, half SHMUP. That's a lot of halves, but I don't make the rules. Worth checking out if you are looking for a lightweight game with QOL features like save anywhere, rewind, filters. Decent enough story for what it is, too. The gameplay shines in all modes so far.
An old school childhood favourite gametoy, helps to adapt & improvise controls & analysis on errors & trials
a 9/10 adventure retro and classic now widescreen. graphics are pixel soundtrack sounds chiptune at least it has story and 2 different gameplay styles switching from SCHMUP to top down RPG style.
:) :) :)
I can't say the story or writing is amazing, or that it's even a very fun game. Personally, I've not been a fan of shmups since the early 90s, and this one lacks meat on the bone compared to some Genesis classics. However, I can still recommend it as an interesting attempt at a unique arpg/shmup mashup, or as a 70s sci fi b-movie. Also, it's developed by the venerable Wayforward, so you at least know the gameplay, music and pixel art are solid, albeit the mechanics themselves being quite simple here. I like it when they include all the concept art/soundtrack/etc in a pretty wrapper, and not just in the game but in the installation directory. S'okay if you're in the mood for GBA nostalgia. Side tangent, I appreciate the dev work around emulation and also respect how Limited Run Games rereleased physical GBA cartridges in the year 2026... they're crazy and I like that. Even if I don't collect physical games anymore, it's cool that they're giving people that option. This one would go on my game wall if I had one. Then every so often I'd point to it and say 'Hey, remember when...'
A Truly Unique Concept and a Fun Game!

Summary
It's a shoot 'em up with planet exploration and abilities that allow you to explore more of the map each time you visit a map you've been to before. And there are many hidden secrets in the game to add to the enjoyment in New Game +.
Recommendation
This game is well worth the $20. The original Game Boy Advance game had a bug in New Game + where the fifth boss would softlock the game. That bug has been fixed. And the Quality of Life improvements to the game make this the best edition of the game ever!
Criticisms
The random ship battles are usually way too easy or way too hard. There isn't much in between the two. And when you go to New Game +, you can almost sleep through the battles. But that's not necessarily a bad thing, since you'll be combing each and every corner of each and every planet for that gun data!
One Final Comment
Fan boys can thank feminism for the original color art for Commander Zelly NOT showing up in artwork section of the opening menu. I had the printed strategy game for this guide back in the era of the Game Boy Advance. And if Zelly really looked like that art, Recker would have gone for her instead of Psyme!
