SHORT REVIEW
Time Estimate for a Single Route: 2 - 4 hours Time Estimate for All Routes: 14 - 16 hours Love Interests: Bounces off each other well, all unique in personality and have loveable traits. Feels like a genuine friend group rather than just individuals. Intriguing and charming in their own ways, platonic or romantic. MC’s Personality: Nice development. For the most part, I was fine with how MC was acting. Not so stereotypical damsel in distress. Generally bearable, though there were moments where I did get a little irritated with MC’s personality. Game Mechanics: Easy to understand, I found it fun to be able to access a phone and various forms of social media to see updates on the various love interests. Especially how unique Tyler’s route is, I think it’s executed well. Overall: Worth the price, fun story. I enjoyed it a lot (though I think my hours speak for me..)
LONG REVIEW (ELABORATION + SPOILERS)

TIME ESTIMATE
For all four routes, eight endings, all texts and CGs, I still think it’ll generally take 14 to 16 hours. I only spent a lot of time on the game because I was eagerly looking for new dialogue with multiple different types of runs, as well as lowkey studying the relationship points and just other general aspects of the game.
LOVE INTERESTS
I apologise to Tyler enjoyers or those interested in him. While I did do both his endings, I really didn’t like him so I ended up skipping through his story. I will give a brief summary of him based on bits and pieces I’ve picked up on him. 1. Tyler Grant Childhood friend to lover troupe! I tend to dislike this troupe so you can already see why I’m not that fond of him. Throughout the story, he’s pretty protective of MC and loves to tease them and their friends, this is evident even when not in his route. He seems to be a hard worker and generally kind. As he is not student in the same school as MC is in, players interact with him mostly through video calls and texts. While I think that is unique, it may not be ideal to some players. That’s all I have to say about him. 2. Jamie Donnelly He’s in the same year as MC and is best friends with another love interest (LI), Geoffrey. His banter with Geoffrey is entertaining, I enjoy their dynamic a lot. He’s a sweetheart and hardworking towards his goals. Focused on his studies and likes to take care of others, however, that can also be his setback. Depending on the player, he can come off as rather nagging and overbearing. Chapter 11: Savoury Summer was quite confusing to me in terms of Jamie’s personality.
I do understand that he’s a more lowkey type of guy but his minor conflict with Geoffrey about him and MC’s relationship was.. a little out of place for me. I think it was more due to suddenly finding out that Jamie has had friendship problems in the past.
Unless, of course, I was just an idiot and glazed over that dialogue if it was mentioned earlier. In that case, ignore this entire paragraph. 3. Geoffrey Levy Same year as MC and best friends with Jamie. I found him entertaining, his humour is very aligned with mine and I often find myself snickering at his dialogue the most. A sweetie and quite laid back. Maybe too laid back at times, it can come across as annoying if that’s not your type of person. His story is quite relatable honestly if you’re a student. I think the development with his personality was quite decently done, keeping his playful personality at the end, just with set goals for himself. However.. I will say that his attitude in Chapter 10: Chef’s Kiss & Chapter 11: Savoury Summer threw me off. I do see the vision with how Geoffrey was being presented in terms of development, but the overall story did leave quite an odd taste in my mouth.
I wish the dynamic with Dakota and Charlie was better elaborated, I felt that it ended very abruptly and there was no real solution to it other than “oops Geoffrey was just too in love with MC!”
4. Leo Walter He’s an upperclassman, a year above MC. Well put together and quite isolated (by choice). He’s a no nonsense type of person, though open minded enough to understand when to be more lenient/forgiving/kind in certain situations. He goes on a bit of tangents when it comes to food science, which I find endearing (haha guess which LI I chose first..). To be honest, I really like him and he is my type so I don’t really find a flaw in him so.. ahaha.. vv (I asked my friend who watched me play Sifting Thyme for her opinion on Leo and this was her response) vv To put it bluntly, he may come off as plain and not as interesting compared to the other LI due to his more mature type of personality. While he doesn’t have an out-sticking “problem” in his personality, it may also be what makes players less likely to choose him due to him coming off as boring. It’s also notable that since he is a senior, choosing a different route would make his appearances in future chapters dependent on which LI you choose.
OVERALL STORY
The story contains 14 Chapters (0 to 13) and an epilogue. From Chapter 0 to 7, I think the pacing throughout the school year is pretty well done, events for each chapter were interesting and showcased each LI well. It builds enough of a relationship with everyone and gives players a better understanding which LI they want to choose. Chapter 8: Winter Traditions did throw me off a little. From a seemingly platonic relationship with all characters, the sudden want for MC’s attention and more romantic actions did come as a surprise to me. Especially in my first run where Geoffrey and I weren’t really on the best terms, him maxing his flirtation was quite a shock haha. Sweet chapter though. I have a similar opinion on Chapter 9: Study Date, though I’m more lenient with it due to the fact that you choose a route in that specific chapter, so the surge of romance on the LI is to be expected. I have mixed feelings about the pacing of Chapter 10: Chef’s Kiss. While I enjoyed the overall content in the chapter, some details and traits of the characters just seemed to pop out of nowhere. I am aware that a story needs drama, so conflict between the LI and MC was expected but I still think the catalyst for some of the conflict was just dropped out of nowhere. I just think it would be better executed if the conflict points were introduced earlier in the story (even if a minor mention) then focused on in this specific chapter. How the conflict closed off could have also been better done, I feel. Most of them kinda just solved it with a kiss. Other than that, I don’t have any “complaints” about the other chapters.
OTHERS/PREFERENCES
1. I wished there was a relationship/affection point metre or indicator in the game, one that lets you see how you stand with each individual character, even if it was just a bar of some sort. I do know that the character beside your saves and on top of the chapters screen does indicate who you have higher points with, I would have just preferred to be able to keep track of my overall points with each character. 2. The skip button was a little inconvenient if you’re trying to quickly do a different route than you originally took. While it is stated in game that skipping would skip ALL texts, I wished it didn’t skip unseen text cause you can miss extra dialogue due to this. 3. I think it would be better if you’re able to save at a pinpoint part in a chapter so you don’t have to redo stacks of chapters if you’re simply just trying to get another ending or if you’re just dialogue hunting. I didn’t mind it much, but it definitely would be more convenient overall.
COMMENTS
Overall, I really enjoyed the entire game! Beautiful art and soundtrack! Thank you for the hard work!! <3
Take a delicious journey in Sifting Thyme, where the love of food and romance combine to make the perfect dish!
The Story
You're a new student who has transferred to the Lincoln Culinary Academy, a private school, to study the culinary arts and find a side dish or two of romance on the side. There are for love interests, Tyler, Jamie, Leo and Geoffrey. All cute and adorable in their own ways. Tyler is the reliable childhood friend, Jamie is hard working, sweet and friendly, Leo is the school's celebrity who comes from a prestigious culinary family and then there is Geoffry, a slacker with a “don’t care” attitude but loyal to his friends.
Game-play & Features
The settings in this game are your standard find, volume controls, text speed, display settings and credit info. There is also a library where extra content unlocks on each potential romance as you play through the game. The game is divided up into 13 chapters and an epilogue. You can hide the hud easily to take screen captures. There is a log that is created as you play so you can always go back and check past conversations. You can save your progress but I found no way to rewind your progress and you cannot save during the screen that shows dialogue options so you're basically stuck with the dialogue option you pick unless you save in an earlier spot and reload the game. The fun mechanic that this game integrates is adding social media into the gameplay though your in game phone. Apps such as Snappbuzz or Clickagram and a message app. I never really found a purpose for Snappbuzz as nothing ever showed up in it (could be a bug) but had fun viewing the posts that would come up in Clickagram. The game being split into chapters lets you focus on the lives of you and your romantic interests in stride. It does not feel rushed and you can interact with each character equally until about chapter 9 when you have to start focusing on which romance you are going to settle on for your final run to the end. This game is not graphic or lewd. The romance is light with hugs or kisses.
The Visuals & Audio
The artwork has cute anime styled characters. Clean artwork, bright colors and clean backgrounds that mesh well with the character art. This novel is not voice acted, which is a personal preference, some enjoy making up the voices themselves and others like them voiced. Personally I am happy with either style. The soundtrack is okay. Piano music that changes with the chapters and locations within the chapters. It is pleasant enough but I found myself keeping the volume down low and focusing more on the narrative. There are also no ambient sounds to make the experience more immersive.
Overall Experience
Overall I ended up really loving this game. It started off slow and I did not get really hooked on it until mid-way when the romance started heating up by Chapter 9 and I had to pick a romance route. I loved all the characters so it was hard to decide on the first run. I ended up picking Leo as he was actually my least favourite up until mid-way and not normally my type. The ending I had with Leo made for a fantastic romantic ride. I ended up loving his character the more I delved into his story-line. I look forward to going back into the game to experience the other three romantic endings. A great otome novel. It was fun, as well as educational and I loved all the characters (which is rare)! 💖 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3173653915
Please follow our curator page, Otome Lovers, if you'd like to see more reviews like this one! Now I know why I had to read this VN... IT'S SO GOOD! It makes you feel REALLY GOOD too. With warm/cozy vibes that is. It makes you laugh... It makes your heart leap in joy and it makes you have emotions that may not frequent you on a daily basis. Although you play as a student in a Culinary Academy and get to hear about words and foods that I had to look up... It also makes sure to include friendships, dreams, fears and much more. There is romance, but in the beginning it's on a low level until you get on a character's route. And then... Then you float on a cloud through it, ascending even further into the skies once you sample an epilogue... Or two... Or all of them. (I am referring to "BEST ENDINGS". There is also "Neutral" and there are no Bad Ends. Hah! GOOD.) Guys. Alright! I thought Jamie was going to be the best one. Just look at him. Black hair... Kind... And then I saw Tyler and found out what he was to the MC and then I saw everything in a new light. I saved Tyler for last. (Does anyone else think he looks like a tiger and there are glimpses of him acting like one...? :D) I liked all the characters. None of them were jealous beeps towards one another either. They were rather understanding... Even though there may have been a moment or two where a character may have been a tad bit upset and said "how did you get with her?" (And yes, you can play as a male too if you'd like). They still didn't kill one another till this day. Although I still think that Tyler had a shotgun in his office and was ready to use it to assert his authority. He had that look about him. Jamie was the cute fluffy sheep you want to cuddle. Geoffrey had his own charm. Leo... Leo was unexpectedly damn good in his route. It went from barely seeing him to woo! Dominating and more awesome lines! But the best lines go to Tyler. And looks and yeah, okay you get it. He also has the sexiest CGs to boot. (One of which I will secretly display when no one notices. Mhm.) I may not have learned much about any of this fancy cooking stuff or was even able to physically transport myself into the game for a bit to see what it was really like, but...! It's emotions will be imprinted on me for a long time. Thank you... Oh so very much. :D :) <3 (And yes, although this game may not have bullying. School with no bullying, what? Yeah. It's awesome. I meant continuous bullying that is... This game still has drama. Some. So cozy vibes all the way baby!!!)
DNF. Unfortunately, this game didn't quite do it for me. As others have said, the beginning is slow. The LIs don't show interest until chapter 8, and you don't choose a route until 9. The chapters feel superfluous, because there's little compelling going on. We learn early on the personality traits of the LIs, so I'm not sure why we needed 8 chapters to show all the cooking and chef related activities they're doing. The relationships with the LIs don't evolve: The LIs are just friends with the MC and then suddenly at chapter 8 they're all into the MC. Further, the choices you make in the previous chapters determine who you can choose in chapter 9 and there's no rewind, which is a bummer because the first 8 chapters drag. So if you want to go back and make different choices to get a different LI you have to start at the beginning. You can skip text and go just to the choices, but I found the skip function annoying and jarring, and there's a "are you sure you want to skip?" box that pops up every time you click it. One last small issue is that this is a game about a chef high school there is almost no drawings or images of any of the meals people are eating or making. I'm not sure why this was the choice they made.
An amazing story with all the characters and the romance between the 4 main character routes you can choose from (Tyler, Geoffrey, Leo and Jamie)!
A really nice cozy game! I love the dynamic between the four boys, they all bounce off each other nicely. There’s lots of fun moments in the common route, and each love interest gets the spotlight during their own route. I like that the MC gets a character arc alongside them! As the story progresses, they gradually become a more confident and skilled chef. This game is fun and fulfilling for its price. I had a sweet and cozy time, and highly recommend it! ♥
I am a Kickstarter backer and I have zero regrets. This is a sweet VN with beautiful art and a fun story about a group of kids in culinary school. I did find the story slow to start, but once things started picking up, I became engaged with the characters and wanted to keep reading and find as many endings as I could. I was able to see the regular endings, but those perfect ones are elusive for now. I enjoyed my time spent with Sifting Thyme so much that I decided to back the dev's next project. If you like romance VNs where your decisions do affect the ending, check this one out. I need to make a quick note about my time played - it's a little inflated because I had the game running in the background occasionally, so don't expect to spend as much time finishing the main story (unless, of course, you want to).
I first played this game on mobile and thoroughly enjoyed it there. It was great to replay it with a bigger screen and save slots. I'm glad I backed the KS to port this title. The mechanics are standard for a visual novel, and it's easy to get on the route you want. The only issue is that the skip mechanic is only for skipping from choice to choice, which can make things a little inconvenient during replays, but it's a very minor gripe. The love interests are charming and distinct (my personal favorite is Leo, but the others have their own charms). They also have great chemistry even with each other. I love the dynamics between them and even the NPCs. The MC has a strong personality, which can be a good or bad thing depending on what the player is looking for. It's a big plus for me that you can choose their gender and pronouns. Overall Sifting Thyme is one of my favorite feel-good romance games.
Sifting Thyme is a real pleasant surprise! The story is really refreshing and the characters are endearing. It's well-constructed and doesn't move too quickly, giving us plenty of time to learn more about the characters before we even have a choice of route. The overall atmosphere is gentle, with a touch of humor in some of the dialogues: a real shôjo vibe. If the game's creator ever wants to work on improving the game and developing new features, I'd suggest adding illustrations of the dishes being prepared, or perhaps even a "recipes" tab. From reading the dialogues, everything seems delicious! Now that my character has had a happy ending with Tyler, I'm curious about the other endings and will certainly complete them. ✨ PS: I couldn't take a screenshot so I don't know if it's from Steam/Mac compatibility or if it's from the game? I've changed the control keys quite a few times but nothing works. 🤷🏻♀️
