The game engine is excellent, as is the design and detail. The fact that one of my niche interests (Battle for the Bundu) is seriously addressed in this game is amazing to me. Excellent game on all counts!
Wondered what it felt to fight in WW1 Eastern Africa?...German Askaris vs British KAR's (reminds me of a nice Opsrey book I own). Well, I am delighted ! The flavor is there, the product looks gorgeous, and I am enjoying playing my "African Queen" (movie wink) here. The designer has well captured the intricacies of colonial warfare in the area during the Great War. The force structures, and above all the tactics and the strategy are very well rendered. As the German I went a bit cocky after my easy victoires and lost against the big bataillons of the Entente. When they came after me in force, I had to run...luckily using my Askaris skills in guerrilla warfare to save my skin. I tried the other side, thinking that playing an Elephant would be easy and that the German fly would be crushed soon... big error. The flies (Tse Tse) and the mosquitoes (the Malaria and other diseases are killers, like was the case by then) just wrecked my ambitions and I had to carefully progress, in the rare moment when heavy rainfall or drastic heat did not prevent my operations. i was feeling being "there", which is, after all, what I believe is best in an historical simulation. Great job! One last wish, SGS guys, make a game "out of Africa"(another movie wink) next time.
Groete uit Dodoma, Tanzanië. Ek skryf in Afrikaans, my moedertaal, want ek is eintlik van Ndabeni, 'n voorstad van Kaapstad. Ek het saam met my familie daar gewoon. Die Engelse koloniale meesters het my baie sleg behandel: Ek moes bedags in die tekstielfabriek werk of by die hawe help aflaai, in die aande het ek musiek gemaak vir die dronk soldate. Eenkeer het 'n varkgesig Engelse sersant my ure lank opstote laat doen. Elke jong man wil vry wees. Dit is my vuurdoop gewees. Toe ek Kaapstad baie jare later besoek het, was my pa se huis weg. Hierdie gedagte pynig my baie. Vyf jaar gelede het my seun vir my 'n rekenaar vir my verjaardag gegee, so ek speel soms rekenaarspeletjies as my vrou slaap.
This has to be the best in the SGS series. Perfectly balanced and true to life. I've read quite a few books on this campaign, and of course Von Lettow-Vorbeck is an African continent napoleon. The Germans fought with an elan, skill, and cohesion that is rarely if ever seen in the last few centuries. The game does a great job giving you control of everything while simultaneously providing the correct historical outside influences. I love the artwork as well. If i could own this on paper for a board game with friends I would. AI was not bad at all, though i suspect a human player on the British side would of kept me from achieving a total victory. Buy it and you wont regret! Heia Safari!
Nice game for a rarely covered area
Espetacular! Spectacular! It is one of the two that deal with this theme! Very well finished in its graphics. The music had to be this one. Perfect. Strategic overview excellent. Comparison of forces in combat perfect. Cards with the main events. Improved design of the units. No matter how much detail there is the screen never gets "dirty". 10 out of 10 For wargamers as I say: A Must Have!
If you like history and strategy games play this game! Besides some typos and the occasional crash, it is tons of fun. I'm hooked on these SGS games.
Perhaps one of the best games in the series despite all the bugs
SGS Heia Safari is a true gem with such great historical immersion that when I play as the good guys I almost become Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck myself. If you're an armchair general, history buff and think it's good to educate while playing then this game is for you. SGS/Avalon should add on the Steam page that there is PBEM and a local multiplayer and I hope SGS and Avalon Digital will release more WW1 campaigns...YES I´m looking at you Gallipoli.
