Reviews
Not ready for Early-Access, but keep an eye on it.
*From the perspective of someone that grew up playing several iterations of Sid Meier's Pirates, The systems are all in-place currently, but everything is either barebones or painful to interact with as it stands. Everything I'm about to say for the next few lines is negative as hell, but it's because I want to see these things fixed as soon as possible to give this game the chance it deserves; >Almost every menu I opened, starting with the town-management menu, has bugs. Both visual and gameplay. Buttons doing nothing until they're clicked multiple times (inventory), background flickering when hovering over stuff (town "skill" menu", the works. >Character creation (for some reason) has even less visual options than it did in the playtest. Not a huge deal, but I don't understand removing options that were available before, like alternate faces? >I don't know if they're married to their current mini-map in the upper right corner, but I find that "transparent ink-stain" style is very irritating to deal with. There are no actual symmetrical edges to the map, it's just a big amorphous Nickelodeon blob. >Instead of having sail positions (Press W once for half sail, press it again for full sail), you hold the button down until it gets up to full speed. It feels imprecise and annoying, more like driving a forklift uphill than it feels like sailing. >There's this weird "chromatic abberation" style vignette around the entire screen when you're sailing that makes everything outside the center appear blurry and washed-out. There don't appear to be any specific graphical options aside from Resolution/Refresh Rate and generic "Low/Med/High/Ultra" graphical settings. >Got into ship combat and it felt good, but transferring cargo between ships afterward was bugged to hell and back. There is no "transfer all" button that I was able to find, and individually moving stuff from 1 inventory to another had a failure rate of about 70%. >Finally, I got frustrated enough with the minimap that I decided to hit "Tab" and try to see if there was a full map in the menus, and it got me into an endless loading-screen. Tapped tab again, and the screen would disappear / reappear instantly. Alt-F4'd and got outta there. It's a really good start, good "bones" for a Sid Meier's Pirates successor, but it's a longggg way from being finished. Much more of a Beta than an Early Access experience from what I've seen. I would recommend keeping an eye on it and seeing how they progress over the coming weeks/months- I've seen a lot of these "spiritual successor" games come-and-go, launching to "Mixed" reviews and causing the developers to immediately give up and leave. This game isn't the same generic Unity Asset Store slop that I've seen a lot in the past, they've actually tried to make something substantially similar to a "Pirates! Spiritual Successor", and it LOOKS the part, it FEELS the part, it SOUNDS the part, but it just needs more fleshing-out and polish. TLDR; I'd say that this game feels closer to Sid Meier's Pirates than Windward Horizon does, it's a way better game than Buccaneers!, it's a way WAY better game than Caribbean Legend, the only thing that's holding it back right now is Bugfixing and Finishwork. Cheers to the developers, I hope to see your game find success.
Played through the tutorial until the pirate captain asked me to go sink ships. Most things were fine up to that point. When I went to initiate combat I couldn't get combat to work, it was hard enough to catch any ships since everything seemed to be the same speed, even the heavy trader ships. Once i caught a ship, no matter what I tried, combat would not start, the timer just kept ticking down (even into the negative). When I tried to auto-resolve combat I was sunk (with no clear way to purchase a replacement ship). Eventually I got frustrated and tried to leave the game, and no matter what I hit no option showed up allowing me to exit. I had to alt-f4 to get out. There are some core mechanics here that eventually will be great, the concept is great, and I LOVE Sid Meiers Pirates so I had high hopes for this one. But right now this is way too buggy even for early access, its not a beta, its barely even an Alpha. I will return when its more refined but core mechanisms like exiting the game are going to have to be added first...
Amazing, but so buggy it's basically unplayable in its current state.
The price is high, but is it worth it? I'm only two hours into the game, but it feels good so far. I've read about bugs, but I haven't encountered any game-breaking ones yet. It feels like a predecessor to Sid Meier's Pirates!, which is why I'm playing it. From what I've seen, there are lots of ways to play, and it's clear that the developers put a lot of love into this game. Nevertheless, it is clearly in an early access state, but it is already enjoyable. If the game doesn't fail due to its steep pricing, it has great potential, especially if the servers become well populated. Until then, it's fun to play solo.
This is not a finished game. Once leaving combat, the entire games seems to stop working. Other ships will just circle in a port, If you try to enter combat with another ship you cannot sink a ship nor can yours. The only way to end the subsequent combat is to board every ship in the opposite fleet. If you take over a port the game seems to crash completely.
At this moment in time this game reminds me very much of Sid Miers meets Port Royal without the smooth flowing game play. I xan understand Seven Seas Adventures reasons for wanting to launch, however in my humble opinion there are way too many bugs, issues and glitches with this game for Steam to consider it a game to put on the shelf for sale. The Alpha and Beta have let them down and it would seem that developers felt it safe to launch anyway. There are far more, cheaper, better "finished" products out there for you too play if you enjoy tall ship experiences. £20.99 is a fair price for the game, though Port Royal 1 has better graphics and is a finished product not too mention far cheaper. This however is only my honest opinion and you may say conjecture. Play the demo for yourself before commiting (demo gives 5 hours of game play time hints and tutorial are difficult to follow and font is hard to read, but seriously try this one before you buy it) to a purchase
Also alles gut? Mal schauen... Für PIRATES! Fans schaut mal rein.....
Definitely a refund. I don't recommend it. Why? The game is empty. The graphic component makes you break your eyes during the dark/fog. Music -2 melodies. There's no character screen, so it's impossible to figure out what your reputation is or what's going on. In fact, in its current state, it is not a game, but a blank for a game that is definitely not worth the asking price. Every aspect of the game needs to be improved. In 2004, the game Port Royal 2 was released, in which the graphics look better, there is more content, and the music is more enjoyable than in this early access 2025.(although it is clear that many aspects are taken from this series of games and Sid maiers pirates. P.S.In no way am I trying to hurt the developer and wish him success, but releasing such a product in early access at such a price is not the right thing to do. I sincerely hope that the project will have a future and that it will be finalized. Then I will definitely buy it.
