Serene Estates: Last Guy

A solid, fun retro style platformer designed for all ages (with the subtext you'd expect from Kvlt). The game gives you the basic controls and then you figure things out from there. No yellow paint, no companions telling you how to solve a puzzle 0.2 seconds after you first come across it. The controls were tight, saves were fair. I had a couple of small bugs that did required reloaded saves but, again, the save system is fair so those bugs did not hinder enjoyment at all.

What a great little puzzle platformer. Gameplay is very straight forward and enjoyable. It has fantastic atmosphere with great music and art direction. The story is interresting with intruqing characters and a fascinating setting. It's short and sweet and doesn't overstay it's welcome. I found it pretty easy overall with only a few more difficult sections. First playthrough took me a little over 3 hours. It is worth replaying, for things like trying to free all podpeople or getting the diffrent endings.

A fantastic 3D puzzle platformer with a distinct atmosphere. The controls are simple, but responsive - the movement and jumping feel great and you are always in complete control. The level design is great for the most part and some of the drone combat sections can be viewed as difficulty spikes, but once you get used to how to position yourself and manage energy it's completely fair. In general the difficulty curve is very intuitive and the game demands more of you as you progress. The story is set in a dystopian future and seems straightforward, but it has a couple of twists and turns which make it deeply personal. Overall it's one of the best gaming experiences I've had in a while and I only wish it was longer.

Left me wanting more.

Fun little family-friendly platformer/puzzle game. It wears its inspirations on its sleave, so you can expect an atmosphere similar to System Shock with gameplay that's a little more like Portal, and a main antagonist that's like the villains from those games. Of course the game has an anti-escapist moral lesson in there which is a little bit tongue-and-cheek since it's delivered by a computer game, but that's to be expected from a Kvlt game.

Despite its somewhat dark tone, this is a delightful little puzzle platformer. There isn't much in the way of violence (just blowing up drones), so it is suitable for a wide age range. Camera controls and movement are fluid, and the puzzles strike a good balance when it comes to fun versus challenging. I've died plenty of times, but the overall difficulty level is definitely not in the 'Soulslike' category. This is a game that casuals can enjoy as well, as the challenges ramp up in a fairly linear manner. If you want to make the game more punishing, simply avoid the health power-ups. Full disclosure - I did some pre-release testing, so I was awarded with a free copy of the game (thanks devs!). Even though I've played through multiple times, I still haven't 100-percented the game. Some of the items must be pretty-well hidden. Side Notes: Although the developers recommend playing the game with a controller, it works perfectly well with keyboard and mouse. Also, although some aspects of my PC are below-spec, the game still played very well with the exception of a couple of small segments where I experienced lower framerates. There was nothing I couldn't get past, though.

You know that awesome feeling you had when you played half-life or portal for the first time. Yeah, this game captures that feeling of quality and nostalgia better than most indie titles I know. Definitely a game you want to go into blind for the best experiance.

This game was fine. Obviously this is just WEF: The 3D Platformer. The story is fairly written and does dive into the whole "eat bugs, live pod, own nothing, be happy" idea. I'll go over some pros and cons of the game. Pros: The game, while having very simple platforming mechanics, does it do it well. There are collectables in health and helping your friends escape with escape keys. The second one doesn't really do anything for the gameplay, but it is special as you are the chosen one to save humanity from this torturous fate. The combat for this game is definitely an interesting idea. Using drones to shoot other drones while maintaining a energy meter and it punishes you for not paying attention to it if you are spamming bullets are just flying around fast. The challenge is fair for what it is. Its a simple platformer and you do have to use your brain to get around certain obstacles. Its not super hard, but its not brain dead easy. Cons: The game is kinda buggy. There are moments where I got stuck in between boxes because of the barrier and I had to either reset the game or somehow die. I wasn't able to see the final cutscene with unplugging the admin or escaping because there was a loading screen that was 100% playing throughout the cutscene. The final boss was a great idea, but I didn't like its execution. There is no checkpoints so if you ♥♥♥♥ up, you have to do the fight all over again and there's a certain edge where it is very hard to grab it to bring yourself up. I fell and thinking I already beat the boss, there would be a checkpoint, but nope I had to redo it all over again. Also you can practically just keep moving and the boss isnt that much of a threat. Finally, I wish the game was a bit longer. I did get this on sale, but for 20 dollars I thought it could of been a bit longer and have a bit more content. Look its not a gem or gold, but it is silver. Its fine. Its not super bad, but isn't exceptional for a 3D platformer. Its decent, but these guys are a newer dev team so I wont bring them down super hard. For any dev looking at this review. Fix bugs of certain stuck spots and try and add a bit more content. Those would make the game 10 times better. I wish the best for this team as you do have some potential. Is it worth $20? If you really are a sucker for 3D platformers, sure. But I would wait for a sale.

It's LASTING TIME!

WOW wow WOW I didn't expect to like this game as much as i do BUT I'm back craving more Theres something to be said about the graphics and overall style of Last Guy that just really hits in a time like this. No, it doesn't have ray tracing or crazy HDR textures. Game is nicely optimized and looks on point with the style they were going for. It feels true to the N64 / Playstation 1 era which I grew up with, obviously its more modern feeling but with the down sampled audio, simple textures, simple movements its hard not to fall in love with the style. Movement and mechanics in game are predictable and great addition on top of the spooky story, this series could easily have a few dlc's dropped as a sequel or prequel. The puzzles are challenging enough to make you scratch you head as at few points but with some exploring you'll eventually figure them out. Sit back, crack a Soy-Breeze and play through Serene Estates Last Guy Another solid release from KVLT Games! Don't eat the bugs!
