This looks like an older, excellent game called Freedom Force. Sadly, it doesn't compare. The combat is long, confusing, and slow.
I really wanted to like this game. It has so much going for it, and was even kind of fun for a bit. It has a lot of good ideas, but a little too many flaws to make it worth your time. I mean, I bought at at 10$, which is an O.K price for the time I played it, but I doubt I'll give it another whirl. The three main issues I encountered were: 1) Not enough to do at your homebase. Basically, you're trying to unlock a couple of new abilities to play with, but there's barely any sense of progress. No equipment or base building, which leaves strategy at a pretty shallow place. Even unlocking new characters isn't that interesting, mostly because it's a linear progression. If only there was more to DO! 2) Fighting many enemies is tedious. It's just not fun to wait until they all have their turn. And it really makes one favor AOE attacks. It was a fun idea at first, but then it quickly gave way to boredom. 3) Dialogue choices are bland and meaningless. There's no sense of agency, it doesn't matter how you reply to anything. It would have been better to just omit the choice. Writing is not poor, but it's not inspiring or interesting enough to support the lackluster gameplay. This is a shame, because I loved some of the missions, loved the different powers and the feeling of being a superhero. However, the game's fundamentals are flawed. Maybe they'll fix it with a sequel some day.
Unfinished and Abandoned
This doesn't feel like a superhero game. Fighting wave after wave of faceless goons with very little variety in your enemies really didn't do it for me. This is really more of a tactical combat simulator for a squad of elite combatants. It's more like Xcom with superpowered people, except more boring.
I love the setting but I just can't recommend this game. Levels are kinda long and often get tedious with the sheer number of enemies. The damage system like wise does the game little favor feeling like complexity for the sake of complexity.
Love it recommend it if you beat this id say try botth freedom forces also sold on steam(tho a bit old but definately great)
Cool game...just wish the Devs would make a mission creation tool and let people go crazy making content for the masses to play.
I liked it in 2020 but I was waiting for more content beyond the first two chapters. Here I am in 2025 checking back to see what has been added and found nothing! Completely abandoned since 2021. If this comes up in your queue and you think "Hey I love X-Com and Superheroes!" Forget it. Even on a 90% sale it isn't worth it. It's too bad.
A buggy mess with a 4-color comic aesthetic. You'll be fighting the PS2-era camera as often as the villains. Characters react to attacks before they land, woeful bot situational AI, level designs that make the camera issues worse... and yet there is a silver age charm and fun to be had. This has one of the better hero character creators. Shame the makers of X-Com didn't get hold of this license.
This game is seriously fun and engrossing. I've got more hours in than my STEAM account shows. Character creation = 7/10 There are no capes! What is this, The Incredibles!? LOL. Also, no skirts/dresses for female characters. But seriously, it's a great creation system, but there could be more options, and less overlap (and travel powers would be a nice addition). It feels wonderful creating heroes once again (brings me back to City of Heroes days). Again though, more options needed. Story = 8/10 Cheesy Silver Age dialogue and narration, pretty on point. Though I would love getting a modern-themed superhero strategy game. Character gets the option to choose some interaction responses, but they seem meaningless. New story heroes show up as the story progresses, just like in Freedom Force. Graphics = 6/10 The combat environment looks pretty good, but the cut scenes and headquarters view of the characters look washed out art, reminding me of Fallen Enchantress, and that's not really a compliment (though FE had amazing gameplay). Not horrible, but could be more clean. Again, combat environments look decent enough. Gameplay = 7/10 This is hard to pin down. It's fun and draws you in, but there are some development choices that could be better. You get waves upon waves of generic baddies, which does make characters feel very powerful. However, it becomes a tedious whack-a-mole scenario. There are some supervillains thrown in on many missions, but more focus on them and less on globs of minions would be better. Like a Justice League vs Legion of Doom or Avengers vs Thanos' lieutenants fight. I do enjoy turn-based combat more than real-time COH or Freedom Force experiences (never really loved pausable combat in FF). The issue is that the environment can't really be interacted with or destroyed. You can open doors and such, but it's surprising that a 2021 superhero developer can't or won't do what Freedom Force did in 2002. Stuff needs to be picked up, wrecked or blow up, period. A mini-map would be nice for some levels. Overall, this is worth it at regular price, but *totally* worth it on sale. Also keep in mind that unfortunately there are not many superhero genre games like this, so that automatically bumps it up a notch just out of desperation for more titles like this, lol.
