A very short yuri kinetic novel about death and loss and love. See You Later is a competently put together work with fun moments and heartwrenching moments. So why do I not recommend it? The English translation is tragic. From the get-go, it comes across as stilted and unnatural. Sentences are confusing and unclear, gendered words are commonly wrong (grandpa instead of grandma, he instead of she), and the all-time classic of bad translations of Asian languages: nonsensical tense usage. The spelling of names changes occasionally, sometimes the wrong names are used, and even the speaker name boxes sometimes seem to disappear and appear in the textbox instead. To make matters worse, some lines are left untranslated. There is an entire video cutscene with Chinese text in it whose contents remain a mystery to the English player. There is also a section of about twenty lines where, instead of replacing the Chinese text, a new textbox has been added after each line that contains the English text. Suffice it to say, the English prose resists comprehension and enjoyment. Some brief moments are pulled off extremely well, and then the next line you will have lost the thread. It is not very pleasant. To illustrate the issue, I would like to comment on how I experienced the "feature"s listed in the store description. A slightly bitter confession: There was a confession scene. It was mostly confusing, but perhaps the music and the visuals could convey bitterness to someone. Warm and mellow memories: The story is told in snippets, bouncing between past and present. Some of the past segments are indeed warm and mellow when you can follow what is going on. Evocative dreams: No dreams are depicted in the game. However, in-text there exists To The Moon-esque dreaming technology that is relevant to the story. I cannot give you more detail than that, because the English regarding the topic is particularly nonsensical. And a final, well-spoken goodbye: There is a goodbye. It did not come across as well-spoken at all. All in all, the state of the localization is dire. The game is, however, very cheap. If you can stomach bad translations and do not mind being left out of the loop sometimes, there are some very touching parts in the game that you may want to purchase it for. Even a nugget of actual wisdom at the very end: when our protagonist Gui Yan
is in Yu Huanyin's funeral and she asks an old woman 'is this normal?' regarding her feelings, the woman replies: For a grieving person, everything is normal. And that is how it do be. You will process or not process grief in your own way.
I once got this as part of a bundle and kind of forgot about it until now, but I enjoyed the story a lot! It's very short (around 1h), but I think it actually works like this without feeling too rushed. The plot is rather simple but quite emotional and even thought-provoking. I really liked the characters and the writing (despite the awkward translation), therefore I'd love it if there was more content providing further insight on the characters and events. I particularly like how the lovely art and music manage to create a very melancholic yet strangely beautiful/dream-like atmosphere, which fits the story very well! Overall I found this to be a sweet short experience worth a shot, altough preferably with a discount due to the short length.
This is one of those games/movies/stories that after you finished it you just want to sit down and think for a while. See You Later is a touching visual novel about love and death. This visual novel will take you on a short but with slow pacing journey as Yanzi spending her last moments with her girlfriend HuanYin, who is unfortunately happened to have a terminal illness. The characters' arts and voice acting are nicely done. And the overall style of this visual novel is very artistic, with good combinations of videos and music in between the story. However, this game have a flaw that may or may not break it for the others. As a non Chinese speaking person, there're still a few untranslated lines in the game, and the translation sometime could feel a little bit awkward and inconsistent. Personally I don't mind, because I do understand the general theme of the story. I really like the dialogue between the two main characters, which are the ones I understand the most, the rest just flew over my head. I still recommend it though, for a very interesting experience.
big thanks to Capuno from off-topic for gifting me this VN, Very good story about love and death, relaxing soundtrack with cute character designs and a nice mix of live action videos thrown in such as driving for driving parts/dialogue, I thought it really added it the scenes. only issue whilst minor is the occasional bit of Chinese text at parts when there should be English, I read this in English text. I also had a random crash, probably because I read this on the steam deck but it seemed fine after booting up the game again. But aside from that, a good read if you've an hour to spare
For a grieving person, everything is normal.
I have mixed feelings about this product. I enjoyed the story and its premise quite a lot- a woman coming to terms with her partner’s inevitable death and having to confront it as it happens. I enjoyed the two main girls and their voice acting, I found the art style to be rather pretty and enjoyed the symbolic flower transitions. I also enjoyed the story switching in time between transitions, and the music was pleasant all though nothing to write home about. But the translation is unfortunately, pretty bad. While I didn’t have too many instances where I didn’t know what was supposed to be said, I consistently had to reread things to figure out what exactly was wrong with the sentence. The tense was off, sometimes names were spelled incorrectly, and occasionally sentence structure just did not make much sense. There were also issues of the original Chinese text displaying, but at the very least it would followup with the english text. However, there was a scene with absolutely no english translation, meaning I had no choice but to open google translate on my phone and try and keep up. Along with that, it also seems like some things were not coded right. At various points of the story, the name of who’s speaking would just no longer be present, meaning you had to try and figure out who was talking with an already poor translation. It ended up being a struggle to read and took longer than it probably should have to get through it. But there were enough high points to this where I do feel guilty not recommending it. I did really enjoy it, but the english translation definitely did not do it justice- despite it still showing great potential. I definitely cannot recommend the english translation.
