ehh kinda mid tbh
This game isn't really the type for me, however it was free 4/10

Sect-Machina is a free-to-play 2D metroidvania that demonstrates an impressive level of creativity and polish for a project that originated as a student thesis. Developed and published by Skelecrew Games, it presents a fascinating blend of cyberpunk aesthetics and insect-inspired world-building, offering players an adventure centered on exploration, action, and discovery. Instead of relying on familiar fantasy settings, the game introduces a mechanical civilization populated by insects, immediately giving it a distinctive personality that helps it stand apart from many independent platformers. The story follows Mona, a young butterfly who has spent her life hidden away from the outside world. Forced to conceal her identity beneath a moth-like hood and kept in the dark about the truth surrounding her past, she eventually decides to leave the safety of her home in pursuit of answers. Equipped with nothing but a steel bat and an unshakable curiosity, Mona begins a journey toward the mysterious city lights she has always admired from a distance. The narrative unfolds gradually through exploration, conversations, and environmental details, allowing players to uncover the world's secrets at their own pace rather than through lengthy cutscenes. Gameplay embraces many of the defining qualities of the metroidvania genre. Exploration is rewarded with hidden paths, useful collectibles, and shortcuts that encourage revisiting previously explored locations once new abilities become available. Movement feels responsive, with jumping, dodging, and platforming mechanics working together smoothly to create satisfying navigation across the interconnected environments. Combat is equally straightforward yet enjoyable, as Mona's steel bat delivers quick and impactful attacks that emphasize proper timing and positioning over complicated combos. The game's environments are among its greatest strengths. Players travel through a variety of interconnected locations, including aging residential districts, hazardous wastelands, dark sewer systems, and industrial structures, each designed with its own visual identity and atmosphere. Every area contains memorable characters willing to share bits of lore, adding depth to the insect civilization while encouraging players to interact with the world beyond simply progressing toward the next objective. Exploration consistently feels meaningful because curiosity is rewarded with both gameplay benefits and narrative context. Sect-Machina also excels in its artistic presentation. Its pixel art combines detailed environmental design with colorful cyberpunk lighting, creating a world that feels vibrant despite its underlying sense of mystery and decay. Character animations are expressive, enemy designs fit naturally within the insect-inspired setting, and the overall visual direction establishes a unique identity that remains memorable throughout the adventure. The soundtrack and sound effects complement the visuals well, helping each location feel alive while reinforcing the game's mysterious tone. Although the overall experience is polished, the game's origins as a thesis project naturally limit its overall scope. Some players may wish for additional areas, expanded mechanics, or a longer storyline, particularly after becoming invested in Mona's journey and the intriguing setting. Even so, the existing content provides a satisfying demonstration of thoughtful level design, cohesive gameplay systems, and effective storytelling. Rather than feeling unfinished, the adventure often leaves players hoping that the concept will eventually evolve into a larger commercial project. For players who enjoy exploration-driven platformers, Sect-Machina offers a rewarding experience that combines engaging gameplay with a fresh artistic vision. Its smooth controls, imaginative setting, enjoyable combat, and gradual storytelling create an adventure that remains entertaining from beginning to end. While its limited scale prevents it from reaching the depth of larger genre classics, it succeeds remarkably well at showcasing the talent and ambition of its creators. As a free title, it delivers exceptional value and serves as an excellent introduction to a promising development team with considerable potential. Rating: 6/10
Cool game, having the ability to save when leaving the game(even to the title screen) would be nice, and an explanation of the controls would be great too. Love the art style and the protagonist is so cute, great worldbuilding, just that a better user experience would be awesome! also I fell from a small height onto ground and the protagonist won't get up? only the escape key is working. Probably a bug? Love the game and would like to see more from you guys in the future!
Probably a cool school project but not a good game
plays and feels cheap but i like the art style
