[Anime/Action] Stunning Souls-like 2D platformer w/metroidvania element. Fascinating unique hand-drawn artwork, fun challenging combat through several weapons. Worth playing.
Check out our Steam curator , YouTube channel and X(Twitter)!
I'm in the same local indie game scene as this dev, so I was excited for him to release his new game! His last entry, Miracle Mia, was a cute and fun time, so despite how male gazy-y this new game appeared, I wanted to check it out. If you can get past how objectified the women are (which is a hefty challenge because the game never fails to remind you in both visuals and story), the core gameplay loop is quite fun. It's packed with a lot of weapons, mechanics, special effects, and bosses that would give any Metroidvania fan a good time! The swinging mechanic was especially fun and there is no shortage of upgrades to grant you the feeling of power tripping that is so desired in Metroidvanias when returning to past levels. The bosses are varied and feel larger-than-life, especially when they burst forth onto the stage in dynamic cutscenes at the start of each battle. There is a lot of attention to detail in the art that would come through better if the graphics were scaled up and then optimized instead of being small to begin with. As it is, when the game is full-screened, a lot of the scenery is crunchy and pixelated which is a shame because you can tell how much consideration was put into each environment being different with their unique assets, themes, and color schemes. The story does not come across as being as thought out or as cared for as the gameplay, ranging between a reading experience of awkward to fine, though I wish it was considering how much exposition and dialogue you click through while playing (and I love a story game so I'm excited to click through it). But what I really love about how Scarlet was written was that it was released in five languages. Translating is a huge undertaking, and taking on that additional effort as a small team shows the care Shademare has for this project and their desire to share it with the world, and that's incredibly admirable. Congratulations on a new release!
Scarlet City Devils - Steam - 9/10 In an era of MV burn out from an avalanche of choices, Scarlet City actually stands out and is a blast to play! I can honestly say I’m quite enjoying this one and can easily recommend it!
Scarlet City of Devils throws you into a sprawling dystopian, neon-drenched City of Devils overrun by feral creatures and those who would take down the city. Taking on the role of Scarlet, a mysterious warrior armed with a razor-sharp sword and axe (and more abilities to find) you carve your way through interconnected zones teeming with secrets, challenges, and lore. Exploration is key, as are upgrades and new abilities, to unlocking new areas of the sprawling city. It’s a stylish, fast-paced adventure blending precise platforming with brutal hack-and-slash combat. Added into this is a little puzzle solving. An eerie, synth-heavy soundtrack pulses in the background, perfectly capturing the tone of the city. Whether you're sneaking through shadowed corridors or locked in a high-stakes boss fight, the music adapts to amplify the tension. Sound design, from the clashing of blades to the sultry opening voice over is equally well-crafted.
TL;DR: Just an average run-of-the-mill metroidvania with nothing standing out, aside from fanservice. If you're a fan of the genre, nothing here will be particularly novel. If you're not a fan of the genre, it's not really a good introduction to it. I would give this game a 'mixed' review, if it was available as an option on Steam. As of now, 35 out of 36 reviews are positive and the only negative review so far is made by an idiot, so I'll make my own a negative one and focus on the game's flaws. 1. You can't rebind movement controls, only abilities-related ones. If you wanted to use WASD to move, it'll be impossible to set in-game. Most importantly, Jump is set to UpArrow and you can't rebind it either. Why would anyone put Jump on the UpArrow instead of Z or Space? 2. There are too many abilities and almost all of them are set to different buttons. At the end of the game you have eight buttons (not counting Arrows) which do only one given thing (or one main thing and completely irrelevant second thing, which is not worth mentioning, except for Gun). You have two separate attack buttons - one for quick attacks (sword) and one for heavy attacks (axe). Axe is largely useless due to how fast everything moves, and has two other sub-abilities stuck to itself, which could easily be given to sword, especially given that it does not have any special abilities itself, aside from mid-air downward slash. When you acquire a gun, you gain the ability to jump again three times in the air. Instead of making you click the Jump button again to, well, jump, you're required to aim downwards and use your Gun button. Grappling Hook, given how it functions in this game (aside from being the THIRD melee attack button), could just be set to UpArrow + Attack. Oh wait... UpArrow is Jump. Of course... 3. The game is stuttering in random moments. The character sometimes gets stuck in walls, floors and stairs. 4. The font is barely legible. 5. The map does NOT correspond to the actual game world. Widths, lengths and heights of the rooms are sometimes 10-times larger (or smaller) than what the map displays. Their shapes are also all over the place. Aside from that, there is no option to unlock any hints related to collectibles, so have fun hugging walls for three hours, if you want to do 100% achievements and missed anything. 6. You can prematurely buy end-game abilities from a vendor, that are normally dropped by bosses which you have to defeat anyway to progress further. It serves no purpose whatsoever, except for being a noob-trap and wasting money. One of those end-game abilities is the FOURTH melee attack button, which is even more useless than axe. 7. The prologue spoils the entire plot of the game. Not that it's interesting anyway, but... Why? What's the point of spoiling your own story? 8. No Steam Cloud. Farewell, my save files... Not that I'd ever return to you either way.
Truly the dark souls of metroidvanias! But really, this game is super solid. I tried it at their booth at multiple conventions and played it there for hours. Fun to explore, great combat that feels smooth, and everything in place feels like it has a reason. The bosses also truly make the game shine. It's by no means an easy game, but the boss combat is surprisingly deep and keeps you coming back for more. And the fact that this game was a solo dev project is INSANE!
This game needs more attention, I remember seeing it at cons and being hyped for it to finally release, and now its out and it rocks!!!
