Seems alright. Kind of wish the "world box" had an explanation, it feels immersion breaking to be thrown into it, but I guess it's not supposed to be part of the game. Also this might be a yaoi game, guess I'd have to keep playing to find out.
RPG Maker strikes again! "Sanguine Melancholia" is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel RPG Maker asset/construction kit flips spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." Like all RPG Maker "games", this is essentially a bunch of low quality/canned assets from RPG Maker coupled with a cringeworthy high school anime club fan fiction. This RPG Maker asset flip is more e-book than game, with quite a lot of absolutely garbage high school anime club dropout fan-fiction writing about demons or some other trash... so somehow the "developer" of this garbage found a way to make RPG Maker asset flips even worse. As with all RPG Maker games, the poor quality engine displays badly in fullscreen and doesn't have full HD support or any graphics tweaking options, making this unacceptable for any dedicated modern PC gamer. The point can be made that the intention of RPG Maker is to make demos and small games to pass around friends, and shouldn't be used for "professional" game development. Like most RPG Maker shovelware and asset flips, the game features extremely low quality copy + pasted 2D retro pixel art, looks awful, and has even worse gameplay. RPG Maker is an absolutely terrible construction kit, and never results in games of any reasonable quality or value to gamers. This game is fairly dated at 5 years old... and even back then it looked old and busted compared to contemporary, professionally made 3D games of the same period. It looked bad then, it looks worse now. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. This is "free" enough (not every "free" game in the "free" section is truly free, there's usually some hidden price tag), at least you won't be expected to spend any more money after you download this, but just because something is free doesn't mean it's good, and the cost of a game is more than just financial, your time is valuable too. In terms of public reception, this failed. There's over 130 million unique gamers visiting Steam every month. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 4 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? What's the verdict? I think you should give this one a miss. Although it's free, your time and storage are valuable resources, and the market is filled with superior options.
Developer Response!
The developer has weighed in to inform everyone they didn't read the Developer Usage Rules for Steam "partners", or they deliberately ignored the part where Valve says:
Though it may be tempting, not every review needs to be responded to. A developer response will frequently draw more attention than the original statement, potentially turning a small issue into a much larger community discussion. It's also not a good idea to use this feature to refute customer opinions. Your direct attention can be seen as validation or a defensive attempt to silence your customers.
First, take this developer breach in the context of the developers failure and incompetence. This is not just my opinion, SteamDB does not lie. With a peak of only 4 users, which only happened once, this is utter, abject failure. Complete rejection of an extremely poor quality product by the entire body of gamers on Steam. Almost certainly due to the faults and defects I cover in my review. With that context, let's see what the developer is so angry about that they breach Valve guidelines. The developer response here is bewildering. I clearly point out in my review a series of defects this product has and why it has them. The developer made a deliberate choice to use the crap childrens toy, RPG Maker, to make this garbage product. They're now angry at the consequence of their choices to the point they breach Valve guidelines to whine about it. Nobody forced them to use RPG Maker, however, it is certain that this decision was made simply because the developer is incompetent and cannot use game engines that require real game development skills. The developer seeks to then attack this reviewer instead of accepting the truth about their incompetence. This is an act of delusion from a proven failure. Nothing in the developers pointless breach of Valve guidelines changes any of the objective facts of my review. My review stands unaltered. I cannot recommend this garbage RPG Maker asset flip to anyone.
