About
Immerse yourself in a thrilling murder mystery at the Penby Inn! A luxurious hotel set in the endearing English countryside, Penby Inn is coming under a lot of fire (literally) from mind-boggling mishaps, ghoulish noises, rumours of hauntings and gruesome murder!
To add to the confusion, the rich new owner Samuel Sage, who has conveniently inherited the hotel, is completely clueless about the incendiary incidents, the drama ensuing behind its glamourous doors and the dark secrets it holds!
Will Samuel triumph over the increasingly insurmountable odds, or will he succumb to defeat? Will he shatter under the weight of the heavy burden, or will the sweet refuge of a budding romance see him through the turmoil?
During the course of the game, you will play as Samuel Sage and talk to customers, contractors, and employees of the hotel. You will visit locations in the hotel, examine reports of strange phenomena, collect artefacts, and gather evidence to help unravel the events that have plagued the hotel.

You will also examine computer logs and CCTV footage to gather evidence that can exonerate an innocent person accused of murder and determine the identity of the real criminal and motives behind the crime. To take your mind off the grave and increasingly mysterious incidents, you will indulge in a bit of spirited romance!
The game is a visual novel and comes with convenient features such as a log for re-examining saved evidence and studying artefacts gathered during exploration of the hotel.
Samuel Sage is a mystery story that starts, and then ends in the blink of an eye, with little to no fanfare. It follows the titular Samuel Sage. After his Uncle Ed dies, Samuel inherits his hotel, the (again) titular Penby Inn. Samuel arrives at the hotel to get up to speed on how it's being run, and also finalizes the ownership transfer with Ed's lawyer, James Wang, who is staying at the hotel for a few days. But, the next day, James is found dead in his room, and the receptionist Gemma is arrested for his murder, so Samuel investigates to find out what really happened. Samuel Sage (the story) really only has the bare minimum necessary to be considered a mystery. There's a death, there's some investigating, and there's a final "parlor room" scene where Samuel reveals the true culprit, but that's it. There's no red herrings, no misdirection, no last gasp from the culprit to try to pin the crime on someone else, just a bare-bones "mystery" that comes and goes in (for me) barely an hour. (And that's not to mention to extremely unnatural-sounding dialogue—the whole time I was thinking, "No one talks like this!") Speaking of bare-bones, the presentation of Samuel Sage is also very lackluster, and it lacks many features I would consider the bare minimum for a modern visual novel. The characters all have this odd, blurry filter applied to them, and the backgrounds are all plain, barely serviceable 3D renders. The game doesn't have any way to change the speed of the text (although luckily you can press tab to make the whole line appear at once; still, it's annoying to have to press twice to do what you can does in one press in many other games), and the only way to advance the text is to click one specific place in the bottom right corner of the screen. Also, there is no fullscreen option, and the highest resolution is 1920x1080, so I had to play windowed on my 2560x1440 monitor. (I had wanted to play on my Steam Deck, on which the game did run, but I didn't feel like retooling my control scheme to use tab to skip to the end of a line of text.) Overall, the one word that best summarizes Samuel Sage would be underdeveloped. The characters act extremely unnaturally, like they're just vessels for the mystery that is hardly worthy of even being called that, and the presentation, UI, and features are lacking, to put it mildly. 3/10
Genre
Eine kurze Murder Mystery Visual Novel mit leichten Point & Click Einlagen
Story
Fazit
Eine ordentliche Murder Mystery Visual Novel mit spannender, wenn auch Linearer Story und leichten Point & Click Einlagen. Wer gerne Murder Mystery Spiele spielt und nichts gegen Visual Novels hat, kann hier ruhig zuschlagen 👑 Powered by HoI 4 Deu Curators group in German / English 👑⠀⠀⠀

Follow Main group
 Follow Second group
 Follow third group
This is a nice , but slow-paced game. I would recommend it to anyone who likes detective fiction, or crime fiction stories. The story is well written, with an interesting plot twist.
This is a good game for lovers of detective stories. I enjoyed playing it and would happily recommend it to others. The game is not very long, dialogues are well written.
Overall a positive experience. I would recommend this game for people who are looking for a nice story. Things I liked: 1) I really liked the audio in some parts of the game, it helped enhance my playing experience. There were some points in the game where I just decided to linger to listen to the end of the tune. 2) The backgrounds in some parts of the game are very nice (such as the hotel lobby, and the uncle's office). I particularly enjoyed exploring the office location, 3) I got stuck in some parts of the game, particularly when exploring the app on the computer. Thankfully pressing H on the keyboard showed the hints and I could proceed. 4 I liked the story in general, I am a fan of murder mystery novels, so I was trying to guess all along who the killer may be. What I really liked though was the motivation. Written well, seems true to life. Things that could have been better: 1) Character art was not the best at times, however I was engrossed in the story after a bit and driven enough to learn who the killer was, so this did not bother me. All I can say is, it is different. Could be considered a good or bad thing. art is subjective. 2) I would have liked more puzzles, The way it stands the player 'solves' the murder mystery by presenting some evidences and leading to a conclusion. There is no wrong answer, if you get a wrong answer you simply try again. Bit more challenging items would have been nicer. 3) Steam says the app is not compatible with my deck... which was a bit of a bummer. It is not the developers fault as they clearly say it is for PC, but it would have been nice if I could have played this on my commute instead of my laptop. Note to developers, please, please, please support Steam Deck. 4) The game play is linear, there isnt much choice as such. It kind of works for this title, but would have been nice to have different story paths. Overall a nice game, I would recommend to anyone out there who is looking for a easy-to-play single player game.
Hmm... It's not that this game is overly bad... I just think it can benefit from improvements. Many of them that is. For one, the text is super slow to appear. I am a VN reader and if the text speed can't be increased... I start to fall asleep. Thankfully there is a workaround: Enter + Tab and the text insta appears. You will still have to snooze through "A few minutes later..." Which became an irritant. The characters, while well uh... Designed/animated/created... All stare blankly at nothing. I had to stop looking at them entirely. The game is linear and if you missed something... They will make sure to repeat it for you 3+ more times. That isn't the problem. The problem is that the evidence is useless. As in... You don't need to freaking read or examine it in your inventory... All because the MC will just freaking lay it out anyway... Sure you need it for the *reveal* at the end... But otherwise... MC's motives... Uh... At first he doesn't give a sheet, whines about it and then suddenly he ends up resolving a mystery. Thanks
dead
uncle and a hot woman. It's just strange. While the story was okay and a quick read, there are glaring issues -> ESPECIALLY when you think about it... Come to think of it... They are rather blatant. I will only do two: 1. The Detective that was on the case *should have* removed herself from the case. Not only could she not keep her emotions out of it... She couldn't freaking see past the
planted
evidence. And if this is the way she acted? There was no way that *ex-guy* of hers would call her and ask her for a favor. Unless he is freaking dumb af. (Which is another thing... Most characters are completely useless!!!) 2. The fire extinguisher is locked behind a Smart Cabinet in the kitchen. Yep. You read it correctly. That's a freaking safety violation!!! DO YOU KNOW how many disasters/fires occur in the kitchen?! YOU DO NOT remove access to tools that can AVOID THAT!!! Let's wrap this up. MC who didn't give a sheet, suddenly gives a sheet, goes to solve a crime whilst moaning all the while about it, tells everyone else what happens, then... Finally gets a breakthrough because the Detective is too incapable of investigating past her own attachment/emotions, and thanks to MCs freaking genius PC skills he figures it out. All because evidence was recorded and the killer(s) were dumbasses. Literally. Now I wont go into the killer'(s) motives. Sure grief does bring about hell, but... The way it's presented? It sounds like they were greedy lil pigs in the end. All for them and none for the rest. Now okay, the MC is rich. But see, this one lady knew him since he was little... Couldn't she... I don't know... TALK TO HIM? Ask him for help? Tell him what the situation was? That would make her... Almost human even! Maybe if the bad *person* actually talked to the Uncle at first too and hell, he could've *pretended* to be a changed person? Something else might've happened. Sigh. And here I tried not to be overly detailed... All that aside, I will give credit where credit is due. The "supernatural" twist was great. I didn't see it coming. Which made me think even more that this *should've* been a supernatural mystery. I can't comment on the lady's tale though... Haven't thought it through yet. It was... Weird. So there you have it folks! More themes of "let's not talk about it" and "we be selfish beeps". While I wasn't bored, I actually rewrote the story I've read. And if I have to rewrite something someone else wrote............ :)
This is the first visual novel game I have played, and to be honest did not now about this genre until a friend mentioned it to me. I am therefore not in a position to compare this game to other visual novels. However, I can say that I enjoyed playing this game. The experience was somewhere between reading a novel and watching a play. I am a slow reader so it took me a little over three hours to finish this game. I liked the story. It is simple but entertaining.
