Are the animations a little wonky? Yes. Is the text sometimes hard to read? Yes. Does the audio sometimes get cut off during conversation? Yes. Did I lose interest? Absolutely not. I was fortunate to receive a key for this game and got a chance to play it with my community. I usually do one stream on a game before moving on unless if I found myself very invested in the story and game mechanics. Which, safe to say, this game had both myself and community HOOKED. There were multiple times where I had theories going on what happened and transpired within the town, and learning about everyone's dirty secrets also made the sleuthing to figure out what happened to Tammy a lot more fun. While some may find getting the warrants as a hassle, I found it a fun spin on a cop game, where you can't just wander into someone's house without proper permission. Overall, the story was really fun and engaging (with real voice actors, our beloveds), which is enough for me to look past the other graphic issues and give this game a big thumbs up.
I'll start by saying that the first 5 minutes of this game are quite rough, and leave an initial bad first impression. The main reason for this is the strange camera head bob that exists during the opening conversations. However, once you arrive in Twin Lakes and start exploring, it's fine from then on out. I had a fun time playing this, the dialogue is quite funny at times and slightly janky animations get a good laugh too. The actual detective story is intriguing and it's fun working out how to solve each puzzle/task you need to do. So overall, would recommend it if you're wanting a fun detective story, don't let the first five minutes put you off!
Sammy Jukes Twin Lakes Review
At first glance, Sammy Jukes Twin Lakes is a detective game with promise, but it’s not without its initial bumps. The game launched with some glitches for me, and I had to dial down the graphics to keep things running smoothly. It remained playable, though the overly sensitive mouse controls took some getting used to. Once I discovered fast travel points, navigating became much less of a chore, but until then, it involved a lot of tedious walking. Story-wise, this game really hooked me. Despite some tokenistic characters, Twin Lakes feels like stepping into a small-town drama (think Ramsey Street for my Aussie readers). Everyone’s got a secret, and you can tell some of them are up to no good before the game even spells it out for you. One character managed to surprise me, though—I’ll leave out the details to avoid spoilers. I particularly enjoyed how some of my in-game actions had repercussions later on, adding a nice twist to the narrative. As the game progresses, the pace ramps up significantly, shifting from a slower, exploratory experience to something much more linear. It felt a bit jarring at times, but the story was still gripping enough to keep me invested. One of the highlights for me was the epilogue-like feature at the end, where you find out what happens to the characters post-game. While I loved parts of the experience, I did find the walking back and forth between objectives a bit tedious. A specific instance was getting a warrant, then having to walk to multiple locations afterwards—it just felt like unnecessary padding. The bunker segment also gave me some trouble, though I managed to figure it out eventually. The dog companion was a cute addition, but I didn’t use him much outside of having him follow me around. It was a fun touch, though. I was lucky enough to receive a free key, and while I wouldn’t have picked it up on my own, I’m glad I gave it a go, especially during the holidays. The detective/cop angle was what originally caught my interest, and the game definitely delivered on the fun factor. Graphics: Pretty underwhelming, to be honest, but passable for what the game was trying to achieve. Sound: The constant crunching underfoot started to grate on me after a while, but the voice acting remained clear throughout. Story: Very engaging, with lots of plot twists. It felt like everyone in town had their own secrets to uncover, which kept me intrigued. Gameplay: Helpful visual indicators highlighted important objects, which was a nice touch. However, beyond that, there wasn’t much to interact with. The auto-walking feature felt a bit nauseating at times, but otherwise, the gameplay was solid. Overall, Sammy Jukes Twin Lakes had its flaws, but the story, twists, and occasional surprises made it a worthwhile experience. If you’re into small-town mysteries with a cop-and-detective theme, it’s worth checking out—just be prepared for some initial hiccups.
Nancy Drew if it was open world
This was a lot of fun and a really good game, clearly designed to poke fun with Twin Peaks. The story intrigued me and even though it wasn't always slick in terms of being able to leave out of bounds or getting soft locked with a couple of missions. However this was part of the charm and the characters were something to behold.
What a fun game! I've been looking for something of similar genre to 'Titanic Adventure out of Time' & this game really hit the spot! My first playthrough took about 7.5 hours. I'm excited to dive in again to explore all of the alternate endings. The world: The open world & it's characters have a rather humorous vibe that really play on the stereotypes of a rural American town. I found it to be really exciting to explore the world and come across all the fun little details. The world itself was well laid out and had lots of places to explore. It also feels like a lot of thought went into the layout to make it as functional as possible, (example, the fences have logically placed openings in them that make it easy to cross the map) The Story: The story was very engaging from start to finish with lots of twists & turns. The characters were enjoyable to interact with & the difficulty seemed just right. I got stuck once & needed to talk to the cute dog to get assistance (what a fun hint mechanism), but otherwise I was able to figure out the story. The ending in particular was incredible! Visuals/Sound: I found the graphics to be a bit generic & unpolished. Kind-of reminds me of the generic Unity assets that tend to be used quite frequently in games. Scaling is weird (ex, gigantic bathtubs). The ambiance fits the mood though. The soundtrack is very pleasant and fits the mood, though the mayor has some pretty weird music taste lol. I found that there tends to be a lot of pretty jarring cuts in sound though (ex, walking out of a building causes the building soundtrack to abruptly switch to "outside" soundtrack). Overall, the graphics and sound aren't my favorite, but are still sufficient for getting immersed in the game (my comments are more nitpicks than anything) Bugs/Issues: I did catch a few minor bugs, but nothing game breaking. Mostly just minor typos in the dialog descriptions. The closest to a game breaking bug was how the top right corner notifications tend to block the "X" when using a computer. It is always still clickable, but a bit hidden. Overall, really fun game! Im excited to play it again.
I received a key for this game and really enjoyed this cosy mystery! It's funny, dark and relaxing. There is a wicked sense of humour in this game and it made me laugh out loud. I like that there's fast travel points around the town because this really helps when you're going back and forth to talk to people and search locations. You can run which is nice as well so you can get around pretty fast. The graphics are great with really beautiful scenery and weather. I got stuck at a few points but my trusty dog was there to talk through the case and offer hints, which is the cutest thing - I loved that. If you enjoy relaxing, mystery games then I would recommend Sammy Jukes: Twin Lakes.
