Wonderfully made, and the glimpse into Finnic folklore was very well done. Not long, but the amount of detail packed into it makes this one of the best games I have played in awhile.
The game was fine until the beers were gone. After that it was a real drag.
Runo, developed by runogame and published by Srsface Studios, is a quiet and atmospheric narrative adventure that blends Finnish folklore, personal memories, and supernatural mystery into a deeply reflective experience. Rather than focusing on traditional gameplay systems or fast-paced storytelling, the game invites players into a calm but emotionally haunting journey through rural Finland, where old traditions and forgotten memories slowly merge with strange mythological elements hidden beneath the landscape. Its strongest qualities come not from action or complex mechanics, but from mood, cultural identity, and emotional sincerity. The story takes place during Midsummer’s Eve at an old family cottage surrounded by forests and lakes in the Finnish countryside. Players wander through this isolated environment while uncovering fragments of memories, folklore, and unsettling supernatural hints tied to both the location and the protagonist’s past. The narrative unfolds gradually through environmental exploration and subtle storytelling rather than direct exposition, creating an experience that feels dreamlike and introspective from beginning to end. One of the game’s most impressive strengths is its atmosphere. Runo captures the feeling of rural isolation exceptionally well, using quiet natural environments to create a sense of calm that slowly becomes unsettling over time. Forest trails, lakeside cabins, fog-covered paths, and empty countryside spaces all contribute to an atmosphere filled with emotional weight and hidden tension. Even during peaceful moments, there is a lingering feeling that something ancient or forgotten exists beneath the surface of the world. The game constantly balances serenity and unease in a way that feels immersive and emotionally effective. The incorporation of Finnish mythology and folklore gives Runo a distinctive identity rarely seen in modern indie narrative games. Elements inspired by the Kalevala and traditional Finno-Karelian stories are woven naturally into the experience, adding cultural depth without overwhelming the player with exposition. Rather than treating mythology as simple fantasy decoration, the game uses folklore to reinforce its themes involving heritage, memory, family, and the connection between past and present. This cultural authenticity gives the world a unique personality that separates it from more generic supernatural walking simulators. The pacing is intentionally slow and meditative. Most of the gameplay involves walking through the environment, examining objects, and gradually piecing together emotional and supernatural details through observation. The game is not interested in creating challenge through combat or complex puzzles. Instead, it focuses entirely on immersion and emotional reflection. For players who enjoy atmospheric storytelling and quiet exploration, this approach works extremely well because it allows the mood and themes to fully settle in over time. Visually, Runo embraces a minimalist but highly effective style. The environments are not overloaded with detail, but the natural scenery feels believable and immersive thanks to strong lighting and environmental design. Soft evening sunlight, dimly lit interiors, and dark forest paths create a melancholic atmosphere that perfectly suits the narrative tone. The visual simplicity actually benefits the experience because it keeps attention focused on mood and emotional interpretation rather than visual spectacle. Sound design is another major highlight. Ambient audio plays a critical role in maintaining immersion throughout the journey. The sounds of wind moving through trees, distant water, creaking wood, and subtle environmental noises make the world feel alive even during its quietest moments. The soundtrack remains restrained and emotional, using soft melodies and atmospheric compositions to reinforce the game’s reflective tone. Playing with headphones significantly enhances the experience because so much of the emotional tension depends on subtle sound details and environmental ambience. One particularly admirable aspect of Runo is how personal it feels. The narrative carries a strong sense of emotional authenticity, as though the game was built from genuine memories and cultural experiences rather than generic horror or fantasy tropes. This sincerity becomes one of the game’s most memorable qualities because the story feels emotionally grounded even when supernatural elements begin emerging more clearly. The emotional themes are handled with subtlety as well. Runo frequently explores memory, grief, family history, and the emotional connection people maintain with places tied to their past. These themes are never delivered through heavy-handed exposition. Instead, the game trusts players to interpret much of the symbolism and emotional meaning themselves. This quiet storytelling style gives the experience greater emotional impact for players willing to immerse themselves fully in its atmosphere. However, the game’s minimalist design may not appeal to everyone. Players expecting traditional gameplay systems, puzzle-solving, or constant interaction may find the experience too passive. Much of the game revolves around simply exploring environments and absorbing atmosphere, meaning enjoyment depends heavily on the player’s willingness to engage with slower narrative pacing. The runtime is also fairly short. Most players will finish the game in roughly ninety minutes, making Runo feel closer to an interactive short story than a large-scale adventure. While the concise length helps maintain focus and emotional consistency, some narrative ideas and folklore concepts could have benefited from additional expansion and development. The story’s ambiguity may also divide players. Many supernatural elements and emotional themes are intentionally left open to interpretation, which strengthens the dreamlike atmosphere but may frustrate players who prefer direct narrative explanations or clearer conclusions. Despite these limitations, Runo succeeds because of its atmosphere, emotional honesty, and cultural uniqueness. It transforms a simple walking simulator structure into a reflective journey through memory and folklore that feels deeply connected to its setting and themes. The game does not attempt to overwhelm players with spectacle or complexity. Instead, it focuses entirely on creating an emotional and atmospheric experience that quietly lingers in the mind after it ends. For players who enjoy slow-paced narrative adventures and atmospheric storytelling rooted in folklore and personal reflection, Runo offers a memorable and emotionally resonant experience. Its haunting countryside atmosphere, thoughtful use of mythology, and deeply sincere tone make it a standout indie title for those willing to embrace its quiet and meditative approach. Rating: 8/10

i cant say if its a game or its real life

Rating: Dito: 4.8/5 Chat: 4.4/5 Gesamt: 4.6/5
That was amazing and the soundtrack was superb!
❤️
Buggy, in game breaking way. No mouse invert, no saving. The only FInnish mythology themed game and it's broken and unplayable. What a shame.
A pleasant experience; got kinda teary too. Just a minor complaint... this is not the kind of game that benefits from repetition... and "forcing" it via achievements I feel doesn't make the game a favour. This is a special little journey; savour it until it lasts then let it go. But that's just me. And a nice insight into Finnish culture.
