>You have Typhoid. >You ran out of fuel. >You have been killed. Funny, I'd've sworn I was playing Running on Empty, not Oregon Trail.
This game, at its very core, is intentionally frustrating by design. This is another one of those games where I want a "Yes/No, but" option. This can easily turn people away who instantly don't like that it has to offer which honestly isn't much but its simplicity makes it pretty easy to pick up and get into. Although on the other hand the game itself does a pretty bad job easing you into things and even directs you to the manual for information, which also lack's all sorts of information so you'll find yourself just figuring it out on your own. It has charm but it could use a lot more polishing and maybe some quality of life adjustments. Also a different font would be nice. I personally find the current font used to be weird to look at constantly. W, M, and H, all look similar and N just looks like an unfinished H, it can take some getting used to. This game relies extremely heavily on RNG and sometimes there is literally nothing you can do about all sorts of different scenarios. You can have 5 points in guns and there is literally nothing you can do to prevent yourself from missing 20 fully aimed shots in a row while enemies hit 90% of their shots either on you or your vehicle. You can start a new game and there's nothing you can do about every settlement asking for food and water despite you never running into either on the road and being desperately out of supplies constantly. You might go from one town to the next and run into 3 sets of raiders, you might do the same distance to another place and find literally nothing. Combine that with the fact that if you die you have to start over from the very beginning with no stats and default resources and you might find yourself in a loop of hating this game because you just cant get a run off the ground. This game has it's moments from time to time and other times it's very frustrating banging your head against the wall and just hoping it works. I didn't even realize you could sell items in this game until I looked into the manual because it's just not labeled in game as an option, you just have to find it by accident or know that its there. Hacking isn't explained at all in any regard what so ever and I think it's a logic puzzle but then at times it feels like there isn't actually a solution because duplicate numbers translate into the same number, leaving you with some numbers that don't seem to exist in the solution. For the full price of 4 usd I'm really teetering on the fence whether or not its worth that since there's a lot of games these days, especially indie, that can be bought around that price and offer more. This game's strength and weakness is its simplicity and it can really work against itself because of it. Its one of those games you might fire up and play a couple rounds and then drop it because you couldn't get a run started, or you might find yourself getting a run going and now you're like 2 hours deep into it. On a good run I find myself willing to recommend the game, and then when I miss 10+ fully aimed shots in a row at max shooting stat I feel like this game is horrible. It's constantly on a pendulum going back and forth between yes and no. And for those who play for achievements the ones in this game are pretty grindy and specific.

Fun little game, very minimalist, the RNG can be frustrating at times but it's mostly skill based, reminds me heavily of oregon trail. Incredibly promising for a first game, and worth it for the price.
ENG: I bought it some time ago because it caught my attention but I didn't try it. It is a survival game similar to Oregon Trail, with furrys and in a post apocalyptic environment. In the graphic section is extremely minimalist as you may have seen, the maximum resolution is 1024 x 1024 window mode, but the gameplay and content has a decent depth, with good amount of stats, items, events, etc., there is always something new to consider, you learn as you lose games. I recommend it, it's interesting. Also, read the manual, it is short, it takes 2 minutes
"Running on Empty" is an ode to retro RPGs of the 90's (in 64x64 retro pixel graphics)! It does feel exactly the same but, it plays smoother and has fresh systems and ideas on top of the classic ones! How many years has it been since you last saw a game manual?.. Well, make it zero as this one has! It's highly recommended to read it prior to playing as some controls and options might not be fully intuitive. It will help you understand how to properly play the game and explain its mechanics. It's a simple idea with a couple of interesting systems that I didn't expect to see. Changing clothes, getting tired or sick while it doesn't have "traditional" stamina limitations, and more. Attack, shop, pick lock, hack terminals, pay attention to your gas and supplies.. Join (or dismiss) factions on your journey to retrieve The Package! ^^ There is a variety of guns and upgrades. Generally, apart from the heated action, you'll get many missions and help requests on your way. Most importantly you have to be careful of your resources (especially ammo and gas) and how you manage them. You can finish the game in different ways and, generally, you are free to choose what you want to do and where you want to go without limitations; except.. your resources! Are you ready to go down in memory lane, only to have everything wiped and taken over by this new retro game?.. It might look and play simple but, it's far from it. Deep post-apocalyptic RPG with a 90's feel and look! For more reviews, follow my curator https://store.steampowered.com/curator/44864435-Mewesome-Reviews/
Charming, yet fun! The pixelated aesthetic is endearing as your little cat character faces the dangers of the Wasteland to retrieve his goal, and the very fun gameplay is a bit reminiscent of the older style adventure games of yesteryear. While some bugs may be encountered, overall it’s a big recommend. Also best path is Cult Path!
A fun narrative game with very light RPG elements and lots of mini-games. Multiple factions are jockeying for position in this wasteland while you gradually build yourself and allegiances up. Certain skills are way more important than others (maximizing your gun skill early assures that you won't be slaughtered quickly), but progressing any of them always feels worthwhile. There's a very minimal learning curve, but once you get through it one play through can be completed in under two hours. I'll probably try to get all the endings soon!
In 5 hours of gameplay, I became the strongest person in the wasteland by maxing myself out in every way, decreased the wasteland raider population by at least 80%, assisted every settlement and looted every abandoned location, then killed every faction leader and left And yet my score was under 20,000 by the end of it all Worth it. Next, I'll be destroying the Shelter from the inside and claiming the package for myself instead
Very tightly knit mixture of Oregon Trail and a post-apocalyptic RPG of your choice. While it is brutally minimalistic in presentation and the variety of content, it manages to deliver an engaging experience of a journey through the wastes on a quest to help your home. The events, the systems and the quests are balanced enough to be fun and rewarding yet risky when you mishandle your resources. The aesthetic also clicks for me in a surprising way; with the whole game being packed in a screen of 64x64, it's a pleasant suprise to be sure. Overall, it's a solid experience! As of the time of writing, you could probably accurately approximate the amount of people who played/bought the game based on the achievement completion and leaderboards - quite a rare sight, if a bit depressing... Hopefully this will change sometime. :)
