This game takes a couple new twist on a relatively untapped genre. Runeroots allows you to add items to towers, control your economy, and the affinity system give the same satisfaction as building team comps in auto chess. Haven't seen anything else like it, and the integration feels like it just makes sense, rather than being forced. PROS: -Gameplay loop with either Slay-the-Spire type split road map, or a separate roguelike style game mode that will make you feel right at home. -Visually pleasing. vibrant color scheme. Reminds me of strategy games of old like Age of Empires and Warcraft. Not everything needs to be dark and edgy. -STATS, TONS OF STATS. Being able to have real-time information on the tower and upgrade choices you make is extremely engaging, allowing you to mold your strategies. -Adding items to towers. This greatly increases repeatability and exponentially increases possible builds. There are some super rare combinations that make you feel like you hit Exodia. -Economy system. You can take an aggressive strategy and spend all your resources as you get them, or try to complete the rounds as lean as possible to generate interest to allow you to have a stronger late game. -Affinity system. You can either try to go for vertical affinity on one specific tower type or go for a very well rounded build depending on how the rolls fall. Both options feel rewarding if you prepare correctly. CONS: -Menus / UI. The game hits you with A LOT at once. The game WILL take at least an hour or a couple runs until you feel fully comfortable. This speaks towards the games depth however. -The difficulty can feel punishing at times. If you make a mistake extending the wrong route you can brick your run. Especially if you didn't manage your economy well enough. Don't expect to 'win' each round you play. CONCLUSSION: In the tower defense genre, this is an easy 9/10 on release day. Runeroots finds its own unique place in a time-tested genre with the new system introductions. Would recommend this game to all tower defense enjoyers as well as people coming from auto chess or RTS games.
A lot of easily discoverable bugs (eg, inability to build windmills after you get a tier 5 tower) along with numerous display errors (tower cards not updating with items), a lousy interface, low attention to what's actually fun about the genre, poor balancing... overall a pretty lower-end tier game. 4/10.
Mechanically interesting. The gameplay isn't bad. The biggest problem for me was the visuals, everything is quite ugly.
This game is pretty fun! I don't play a lot of Tower defense games(sanctum1-2 were the only ones i've played) It looks pretty neat and love the rouge-like gameplay and the different Tower Builds that you can make. Playing it on Steam Deck is pretty good as well.
One of the towers throws bees at the enemy. 10/10
Runeroots TD is an underrated gem, a game that deserves much more attention because it's really polished and fun. At the core it's a roguelite with tower defense mechanisms. There are two game modes which play very differently and have separate progress despite sharing the same items, perks, spells, and towers. Adventure mode plays like a roguelite with patching and a how to manage your economy, while Mastery is all about that endless sweetness and chosing rewards wave after wave. Where the game shines is in its metaprogression which unlocks as you play in the form of the village being rebuilt and your class getting more advantages making for unique gameplay. The synergy system and amount of available towers is also great and allows for a ton of combination. It could get some QOL fixes here and there but nothing too frustrating, it plays extremely well on the Steam Deck. If you love both genres don't hesitate!
A deep, strategical tower defense with a nearly infinite amount of options and choices to make during any given run. It's clearly heavily inspired by Monster Train but plays way differently since it's a tower defense.
Great rogue like tower defense with enough intriguing mechanics to keep you interested!
I found the game play to be challenging and rewarding and the aesthetic is so cozy, I could lose hours playing the game without realizing. Personally the Mastery mode appeals to my tower defense preferences more then the adventure but I found both modes to be fun and allows for a lot of replayable content. I can certainly see myself enjoying this game any time I am in the mood for a tower defense game.
