I know it's in bad taste to speak ill of the delisted, and maybe if you have enough local friends and family to sit through this with you, you'll have a better time. But for me as a solo player who has played the original River City Ransom and the Game Boy Advance remake, this game turned out to be a frustrating disappointment. River City Underground commits the greatest mistake that a brawler can make. It simply isn't fun to fight the enemies. Imagine if you were playing Final Fight, but every single enemy is Rolento. Or imagine that you're playing a Spider-man game, but in reverse. You're not Spider-man. Not Peter, not Miles, not Gwen, or Ben or Mayday, or Miguel, you get the point. You're some poor purse snatcher trying to fight off six Spider-people at the same time. For 15 hours. The game has a good variety of enemies with their own particular quirks, but they all use the same core tactics. Staying out of the player's attack range, using long distance ranged and rush-in attacks and sucker punching the player from behind whenever they're trying to fight someone else. This is somewhat bearable early on when you believe that leveling up and buying more moves will make things better, but it doesn't. The enemies simply become more annoying in response to you advancing. You'll try to chase down a gas canister throwing SWAT officer, only for them to block, or jump, or dodge out of the way when you go for the attack. You try to grab them, but the animation for it is so slow that they have all the time in the world to escape, and now you're wide open because whiffing a grab stuns you for a second. Good god, the knockdowns and status effects take forever to recover from. Whoops, I just got frozen into a block of ice by one of the nerds! Time to go downstairs and get a drink! (And the worst part is that there are ways to break out of the stunned state, but the game itself neither indicates this nor tells you how.) It feels like the designer thought that they could advance the genre by making it play more like a traditional 1-v-1 fighting game, but the end result is that the biggest threat isn't being beaten down by the enemies. It's throwing your hands up and rage quitting because you're tired of the enemies constantly reading your inputs, with their stupid hanky panky keep-away ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. I played Glen the shotoclone and Alex. They both have nice, varied movesets that are unique. But in the end, it ends up being a waste of effort because you'll only focus on the few bread and butter combos that stand a chance of hitting anyone. You'll sweat more fighting the overtuned trash mobs than you will fighting the bosses, so much so that the boss fights are all complete jokes compared to fighting the regulars. I could understand if only the luchadors, the SWAT team, and/or the late game enemies were hard to keep up with, but when everyone is making you whiff and blocking you and counter-attacking you, it eventually just eats away at your desire to keep playing, even if you're not actually losing. I loved exploring the map and its varied urban environments. How it’s based on the original, bringing back and updating all of the locations from the NES game, while expanding on it with entirely new districts to explore and fight through. I liked how the story builds itself specifically off of the Americanized River City Ransom, versus other sequels that focus more on the Japanese Kunio continuity. I liked the pixel art and how it evokes the look of the original NES games, even if it had a slight air of indie inexperience to it. Having 11 playable characters is great, and it’s fun to unlock their unique abilities during a playthrough. I liked all the nods and references to other games and pop culture strewn throughout River City. The soundtrack is decent enough, if not particularly great. Some of the jokes even managed to land with me. I can tell that the game was made by fans who cared for what they were making, but it's all for nothing when actually playing the game becomes so miserable. Sorry, Underground. I tried to love you as much as I could, but in the end, you didn't love me back. It's not you, it's me... and by "me," I mean you. It's 100% you. Not Recommended.
TL;DR: A game about to be delisted because licensing issue is a b!tch to deal with. So you should totally get this game right now, while it's on sale. Also, DRM-FREE via RCRU.exe in the game folders. Summary: My early experience of River City games, was from my cousin GBA. Which was quiet generic at the time (at least for me), After that, I never heard about the "RIVER CITY" name for such a long time, until Wario64 posted that it's about to be delisted on Steam. So, I nicked it at a sale price! (You should too, while the deal is getting hot!). It seems the game is a follow up to the NES version, which actually quiet fun! You go around, brawl and beat up people to the objective and when you go back to the earlier place, you'll be greeted by more enemy. Roguelike, it's what people seems to called it, I suppose. Pros: It's actually a fun arcade game. It's simple, but at least it's fun. From the combat, the level exploration, characters and you can even play it Local co-op! Cons: The only cons this game suffers is the delisting. Because again, licensing renewal/issues is a b!tch to deal with and it's probably hell for Conatus Creative to deal with, as this is their only game here on Steam and their source of income. Verdict: It was delisted on GOG back in New Years Eve of 2025, so if you missing out on getting the game, I recommend it here on Steam. Also, the game is DRM-FREE via RCRU.exe in the game folders. If you don't know where it is, Right-click on the game name on the left corner >> Manage >> Browse Local Files. You will be taken to the game folders and voila! Launch it there. No need for *COUGH COUGH*berg or cr4rck, if you want to play it offline without opening Steam. 10/10
this ♥♥♥♥ gone, yo.
I don't write reviews. This is the exception. I got this game around my birthday and loved it. The game was fun. Music was amazing. Then they changed that and it sucked so I stopped playing. I learned of a way to get it back and it all perfect again. This was my first ever game bought and to see it gone hurts. But thank you for one of my favorite games of all time, CC.
Very surprised to see this awesome game get delisted. Anyone that sees this will likely have the game already. Lucky us.
prob the best nes game of all time... one of the greatest, most fun, challenging to learn, impossible to master games of al time. the goat in sooo many genres. 9.98/10, its basically perfect and it only got better with each subsequent game
OMG I'm so beyond glad I bought this before it went. HOLY CRAP! Out of all my games, this is one i kept coming back to occasionally.. Out of the Kunio Series, I've come to play this more than River City Girls 1 & 2, the SNES sequel of the first RCR and more than Crash and The Boys, Nintendo World Cup (Kunio)... What a bummer its gone for now. If i lost my copy i would NEED to buy another... The only other one i ever put more time into was RCR. I really hope they bring it back on to the store one day. I would love to buy a copy for a friend so we could play online cop together if it still works. My wife and I played this all the way to the end and got stuck on the boss and she is over him and now I'm stuck. LITERALLY. Recently I started the game over again because the mini bosses just before the last boss wont spawn. If they don't spawn you cant get to the last boss... Hopefully this isn't something that broke when the game went down.
Had alot of fun with this one, shame it got delisted!
Не мой жанр, но несколько вечеров с друзьями было приятно провести время, стильный пиксельарт, отличные воспоминания об этой игре остались))
This is the greatest reiver city game ever i wish they made part 2 for this game the combo system rock i understand why the ARC studio want this game gone cause its an embarrassment to the company that a small studio out side japan did a better job than them. I RECOMEND THIS GAME OVER OTHER RIVER CITY GAME. AFTER YOU PLAY THIS GAME FIGHTING SYSTEM ALL THE OTHER RIVER CITY GAME COMBO SYSTEM JUST CANT COMPARE. sure they dont have the Normal mods from the old river city ransom but they have move on from that i mean you dont expect a mob boys to pick on small kids right so they are fighting enemy thier in the same generation as them i dont knowy why people dont understand that any ways the game is no longer on sale so even if you want to play it you cant so if u have it lucky for you that you are bless if you dont then find a way to get it if you can
