Reviews
this is a fun verion of Mahjong
Feels more modern than Mahjong Soul; uses names for Yaku I prefer. I like the girls. :)

This game was my introduction to Riichi Mahjong, so I am definitely a little biased here. My total time in this game isnt accurate here because I also play on my tablet, so I have played a lot of this game outside of steam. Before delving into my detailed opinion, I will say that I am far from a great mahjong player. I am fairly middle of the road in terms of rank and I definitely have my losing streaks every now and again. I am also a mostly free to play player, I will get the monthly pass thingy occasionally but I think I have spent a total of 15 or 20 dollars on the game in the past few years. What drew me to this game in the first place were the visuals and the fact that its free to play. I am happy to say that you can play this game as much as you want without having to spend a dime, and it being riichi mahjong, there is no pay to win aspect. At this point there are a few different modes, but for the most part you will be either playing 4 or 3 player riichi mahjong, with tournaments or slight variations also being there to add some variety. It being a simulator, it has different options as far as display goes, as well as visual customization options that you gatcha for. You start out with 2 characters, with the rest needing to be pulled in the gatcha. Same with the custom tile visuals, riichi animations, etc. As someone that enjoys the art, I appreciate that the options are there, even if you have to pull them. As a free to play player, you get 2 pulls a week assuming you log in 5 times, do other weekly missions and recycle items. Events will also give you opportunities to get more pulls. Even if you don't pull what you want, each pull gives you a coupon thing that, once you have enough, you can exchange for whatever character/cosmetic you want(assuming its not a limited collab thing from the past or something). The visuals are probably the most controversial aspect of the game and reading the other reviews, it seems to be a deal breaker for a lot of people. There is a safe mode and other options that I think let you tone down the fanservice, but I haven't tried it to see exactly how it works. Personally, I enjoy the visuals but I can also understand why they would turn people away. The game itself plays great. The animations are smooth and there are plenty of people to play with. The game works very similarly to mahjong soul, but it definitely is a bit smoother. My only real complaint with the game is how punishing ranked can be once you've reached a respectable rank. Getting third place loses enough points that it makes getting third feel awful when compared to mahjong soul. I know its probably difficult to program, but I think ranked points should take performance into account as well. Getting 3rd in a game that is neck and neck, where you've won multiple hands and defended well but really it came down to your opponents narrowly beating you, it shouldn't be just as punishing as getting third in a game where you won no hands, you defended poorly and it wasn't close at all. Close games should feel good even if you lose, but with the current system it seems like a slap in the face afterwards if you ended up losing. Obviously I am not saying give third place points for third place, but maybe if the person played well, deduct less to reward playing well. Again, I am far from an amazing mahjong player, so this wouldn't even necessarily positively impact me, I just think it would be more fair in general. Lastly, I have some suggestions. Suggestion 1: The biggest one is to give players more opportunities for rewards each day, namely, something that can give more players incentive to play longer sessions. As it is, you can finish all the daily missions in no time at all, leaving players like me with nothing to gain(beyond fun of course) for playing for longer. I am the kind of person who will play long sessions because I find mahjong to be addictive, so really this is more to give more players this incentive. Once you hit the higher ranks, the amount of players is much smaller at those tables, so by having more rewards for people to keep playing, you can incentivize more people to be on for more than a game or two. Suggestion 2: Add a shuffle mode for the sets of cosmetics. Its good that the game allows you to have different sets for the cosmetics so you can just switch from one to the other, but it would be cool if I could just click shuffle and have the game with a random set that I have created. This way I can play as a variety of the characters I have unlocked without having to do it myself. It's not that switching the set you have created takes long or anything, but a lot of times after you finish a game you want to just jump right back in and don't really think about it until you are in the game already. Suggestion 3: Add some sort of clan/team system to encourage more players to friend each other and actually play together. This would give players another reason to keep coming back, more mission opportunities and would increase engagement. You could even theoretically expand the use of the starlink in game phone for this. Those are just some suggestions. I really do enjoy this game and will continue to play it. I recommend giving this game a shot and seeing what you think. If you dislike the ecchi stuff, try to mess with the options and see if that helps.
