Nowhere on the steam page is it disclosed that Old World Studios is also LifeTree Games, a deeply Christian organization. The end of the game amounts to direct proselytization and comes out of left field. On principle I do not care too much about a given studio's political or religious leanings, but in this case it is explicit, egregious, and their religiosity is front and center to their identity as an organization. I feel as if I were duped into donating towards their specific religious and political causes by buying this game because all of this information was left out of the steam store page and the point of sale.
This was a really nice remake of the old game of the same name. The soundtrack and sounds fantastic and the graphics were beautiful. The game was just as challenging as the original and I had a good time playing it. I did not appreciate the pop-up with the DLC content for purchase, but it only happened once and so I can forgive that. Recommended for people that loved the original game or for people that like intricate challenging puzzles.
This game is clearly a labor of love from a dev team who understand why old-school point-and-click adventure games were the best. I remember playing an Egypt-themed game like this back in the 90's, but this is takes a fresh approach--beautiful art style/graphics, puzzles that make logical sense and can be solved with clues found in the environment, a fun story (if a bit long-winded in that ending). The "chat" from the archaeologist at the end did give me Myst vibes, the way Atrus would talk to his "friend" (the player) and ask for help. If I had any critique, it's simply the problem that all of these games had--the difficulty in figuring out where you are in relation to other objects, or how many times you need to click to move in a particular direction. Sometimes a click would take you 180 degrees, sometimes 90, so you did a LOT of retracing of steps. It was very easy to miss side passages or doors, and I think finding where I was supposed to go was legit harder than all the puzzles. I never needed to consult a walkthrough for the puzzles; when I did, it was because I'd missed an enclave or some side passage. In general, movement could be quite clunky, and while I appreciated the purple beetle for fast travel, I constantly would click on it accidentally and have to retrace my steps back to where I was before. That said, these are issues with nearly ALL point and click games, so I don't fault this game for that. Overall, I really liked the mental challenge of the puzzles, and the story was decent enough, even if there was too much exposition in the final cutscene. The final puzzle could have been more challenging (you literally only had to follow the instructions on a scroll you'd been given), but some of the others genuinely had me stuck for a while (the boat puzzle in particular--when I figured that out, I felt pretty darn proud of myself). A solid game; I'd play more from this dev.
I have played this game for 4.9 hours so far, and don't have a clue what I am doing. Most of this time was at the beginning trying to figure out how to open this stupid chest. Finally, just got a walkthrough. It appears that I would be using a walkthrough for most of this game. I would have returned the game but went over my 2 hours at the beginning. So, when I get bored I might open the game up and see if I can actually figure anything out myself. Geeeeez.
This remasterd game is fantastic ! Beautiful graphics and music ! Not an easy game, with a lot of puzzles ! Fun, fun !
I hate the clunky interface with limited movement. It would be so much better if you could just walk around with the standard ASWD.
Master piece , this is what i call a puzzle game. Verry well done. More of this pleace.
Do not buy this game. First off, the navigation is so badly done you can miss entire puzzles or areas unless you already know to look for them -by in game logic or by looking it up- and get vindictive about it, and it also renders actually solving any mazes useless, because you can't actually see where you are going or tell if you have turned or how far you have stepped. This is not how to do point and click. They changed puzzles for the new addition and in doing so broke at least one of them for certain. It's culturally offensive and the pop psychology in it is harmful, but worst of all in a puzzle game, the actual puzzle(s) are broken and thus the solutions become random and arbitrary when you can actually solve them at all. I do not mean they are challenging, I mean the information or object are missing from the game. The game is full of typos seemingly unrelated to any puzzle solution, grammatical errors even in spoken files and even what has broken one of the puzzles in the later addition seems to have been a typo where a digit is off by one. I'm offended it was priced at 40$ and that you can't know how broken the game is until you've played it too long to get a refund, because it's a puzzle game. By nature of the product, steam will argue you can't deserve a refund. So don't buy it. Unless you like the experience of putting the correct solution into a puzzle 5-20 times and having it still not work for some arbitrary reason. Do not pay money for this. Even the combination lock code had to be put in repeatedly before it would work with the correct solution. I caught that on stream. There needs to be a return option for "this game mechanically doesn't work which means I can't complete it because it's a puzzle game and can't know that for sure until the nth hour." A change in writing, direction, quality control and changing to free roam navigation might save this game by at least 80%, and if there's a twist at the end that saves the premise and makes it less racist than "aliens must have built the pyramids" I wouldn't know because I am missing key game items to get there. [Edit, I have finished the game and would like to add that the navigation is at the core of multiple puzzles not seeming to have solutions, and poorly designed controls can get you killed even if you have figured out the correct solution to the game's final puzzle. It's broken in slightly different ways than I thought on my last review, but still absurd, buggy, laggy, with poor QA and culturally offensive and an explanation for the feb 17th VS 27th date issue is still not forthcoming, the support site is down]
