Rick Henderson is a fantastic classic side-scroller shooter, this brings me back to the classic shooters I used to enjoy. I recommend this game to anyone that loves classic shooters, plus the soundtrack is amazing.
The short review: This game is great, highly recommend. The long review: I have been very much enjoying my time with Rick Henderson so far. I have a few minor issues but let's start with the positives. The boss bullet patterns are well thought out and fun to dodge, the bosses themselves have cool designs and the visuals are generally very clear. The synthwave soundtrack is pretty great and the controls feel very precise and finely tuned. I particularly enjoy the ability to pick up different weapons to use against different enemies, it makes the game feel a bit like Einhander in that way and the weapons are distinct enough that there are legitimate advantages in switching between them rather than just holding down one fire button through the game. The time between switching adds a nice strategic touch and the different effectiveness against different enemies really makes this more in depth than most shooters. As for the negatives, there are very few. The backgrounds look great, but sometimes they're a bit too bright and it can make it hard to tell what's in the foreground and what is a background decoration. It seems like an effective way to solve this would be to add a slider to dim the background. A colorblind accessibility setting would also be useful to add, as weapon damage to enemies is indicated with colors. The enemy designs are distinct enough that it may be playable without such a setting, but the addition would be useful. I also would have appreciated a controller configuration menu. Not having one means having to use Steam's controller configuration to make nonstandard controllers work properly with it, and it involved a lot of guesswork to set up the arcade stick I used to play. That only took a few minutes though and once it was done there were no further issues. In summary, Rick Henderson is a great game. It's a great tribute to 16-bit shooters while having an identity of its own. Absolutely worth the price.
Not a bad little game, but I find the weapon system confusing. Occasional there is a weapon being dropped, the enemy dropping it is not a unique enemy so you never know who dropped it. The weapon dropped exchanges one of the three weapons you have, but which one it exchanges is not clearly shown by like a color or symbol. The three weapons you have are supposed to be bullet, energy or explosive I guess? There are better shmups out there... but for the price I paid it is a good enough game.
Nice but kinda smallish game similar to sterenden (or whatever) with some ravin' music Its fun and challangeing but i feel it could use some more work on the enemy patterns and such as you tend to get the same configuration of enemies alot and some of them have enemies coming from behind and theyre no threath at all but slow to appear and slow to kill and gets kinds boring after 10 times things like that should be reworked. otherwise it plays and feels good.
If you're into the retro shoots back in the 90s, this one is totally for you! Brings you right back home with the classic feel and the action is fun! With boss fights and difficulty modes, certainly can't ask for more than that. It's also in Early Access which is even better! You can get hooked pretty quick!
The Game get funner the longer I play it.
Delightful shmup with awesome art! This game is very fun. Reminds me a lot of Steredenn which I also love.
Divertente, colorato, impegnativo, mi piace da morire =)
