Rhythm of the Gods

Nice little rhythm game with a unique and interesting aesthetic. If you're a fan of the genre then it won't bring anything new, and it's a little on the short side, but the game play is tight and fun. The game looks beautiful, with a style blending Greek and neon aesthetics to make a living backdrop to the rhythm action, and whoever composed the soundtracks really has a knack for creating some upbeat music to keep bopping along too - I just wish that there was more of it!

I have followed this game for at least two years and have played the tablet version that was in development at the Norwich Gaming Festival. I really enjoyed my time talking to the developers; they are lovely! The game is clever and I like how the character is called Lyrik; it links nicely to the games plot and title. The backgrounds to levels are well done, I like the rocking god and bright colours used. The enemies are interesting and not generic 'baddies', for example, the trees. If you wear headphones I feel that it is easier to become more accurate with the moves you need to complete to the music but I currently play it without headphones and it is fine too. Although four controls makes it seem simple, it is actually very challenging in places thus making it great and worth the £3.99. For example, the first level almost leads you into a false sense of security; making you think 'Hey I am pretty good at this'. The levels following the first are definitely an increase in challenge and test how well you are in sync with the Rhythm of the Gods. I play on Normal mode and find that it is the right amount of challenge and enjoyment. I am sure the more I play it the easier it might feel and I might one day be able to approach the harder mode. It really helps challenge your reflexes. You use four keys set to A,S,K and L to navigate through the music and defeat the Titans who like to party a bit too hard. My only niggle is that it seems that when I miss-click L and accidentally get ; it goes into developer mode and I have to restart that bit again. All in all, a good price and an enjoyable game.

The music is good, story is weak the tutorial doesn't tell you what buttons to push. they are ws and Lk btw but you can remap them however you want. the difficulty ramps up way too fast, but to be fair it seems like a short game. you are paying for what you get for the price.

[h1] A Great, But Rather Short Rhythm Adventure [/h1] Rhythm of the Gods, as you can probably tell from the title, is a rhythm game where you have to make your way through a slew of enemies and obstacles while following the music of several different gods that you meet along the protagonist, Lyrik's, journey. [h1] The Good [/h1] -Although short, the story of the game is rather charming, and I liked reading through the dialogue the game had to offer. -The gameplay is simple, but can be very challenging depending on what difficulty you set. -The Marathon mode, which puts you through an endless gauntlet of obstacles, is really enjoyable to return to from time to time. -The music, while not mindblowing, is enjoyable to listen to while you are slashing your way through enemies. [h1] The Neutral [/h1] -I didn't have trouble with it, but the game doesn't tell you (At least in the main levels) which keys to press for each of the 4 actions you can perform. -There is no option (At the time) to change input/visual latency, but the sync was decent enough for me by default. -I had trouble running this on a decent PC at first, but it may have just been my specific setup. (This is where most of my playtime came from) -The trophies that the game gives you feel tacked on and unnecessary. [h1] The Bad [/h1] -The game is far too short. Other than the marathon mode, there are only 4 levels in the campaign, and they can all be beaten in around 15 minutes (In my experience). -Building off of the last point, because the game is very short, the difficulty curve is extremely steep. -The hi-res pixel art is a bit rough sometimes, and it makes me think that the game would have been better off using smooth art instead. [h1] Conclusion [/h1] Overall, Rhythm of the Gods gets a [u] [b] 6.5/10 [/b] [/u] from me for being fairly enjoyable, but a bit too short for the price point. If Lyrelark updates the game with features such as latency calibration and some more content for the campaign, I think this game has the potential to become something really great.

For $9 it's an alright game. The music and graphics are quite charming but there aren't many levels and half of the songs are remixes. The story can be boiled down to some young gods throwing parties because it's what they love to do. The difficulty scales pretty fast but at no point does it feel like an unreasonable jump in difficulty from one song to the next. There is an endless mode and a timewarp mode that adds a speed multiplier to the songs for added difficulty so in that regard it's a good game if you want something challenging. The ending leads me to believe the developers might release more games in the series but that's just speculation until proven otherwise.
