Note: I already completed the game on epic games after I got it for free, I only purchased it here to support the creators. This game is the only game that has replicated the same attachment I had to the characters of UNDERTALE. That is TRULY impressive. I cannot recommend this game enough if you enjoy story based games.
Return to Ash is a narrative-focused visual novel developed and published by Serenity Forge, built around themes of mortality, regret, and the fragile threads that connect people even beyond death. The story begins with Ashleigh awakening in a sterile hospital room suspended within a vast white void, immediately establishing a liminal atmosphere that feels both tranquil and unsettling. There is no dramatic exposition or action-heavy opening; instead, the game draws players inward through quiet introspection and a gradual unveiling of its central mystery. From the outset, it is clear that this is an experience driven by emotion and reflection rather than mechanical complexity. The gameplay structure adheres closely to traditional visual novel conventions. Players read dialogue, observe character interactions, and make choices that influence how relationships unfold and which narrative branches become available. While there are no puzzles or skill-based systems to master, the choices feel deliberate and meaningful. Conversations shape Ashleigh’s understanding of her situation and determine how she interacts with other souls inhabiting this strange afterlife setting. Each decision subtly alters the emotional trajectory of the story, encouraging players to consider not only immediate outcomes but also long-term consequences. Thematically, Return to Ash explores questions of identity, unresolved feelings, and the possibility of redemption. Ashleigh’s journey is not merely about discovering where she is, but about confronting who she was and what she left behind. The presence of other characters in this suspended space provides a mirror through which she can examine her own past. Some interactions are tender and empathetic, while others introduce tension and moral ambiguity. The writing leans heavily into introspection, asking players to engage with characters’ vulnerabilities and inner conflicts rather than relying on plot twists or dramatic spectacle. Visually, the game maintains a restrained yet effective art style. Character portraits convey emotion through subtle changes in expression, while the sparse environments emphasize isolation and contemplation. The hospital room serves as a central anchor point, reinforcing the sense of being caught between worlds. The minimalistic backgrounds are not elaborate, but they are purposeful, reinforcing the story’s themes of emptiness and reflection. The visual presentation complements the narrative tone rather than competing for attention, allowing the dialogue and character development to remain the primary focus. The soundtrack further enhances the experience. Soft, atmospheric music underscores pivotal scenes, amplifying moments of vulnerability and revelation. Rather than dramatic orchestral swells, the audio design favors understated compositions that mirror the quiet intensity of the story. This restraint supports the emotional pacing, ensuring that the player remains immersed in the reflective mood without distraction. One of the game’s strengths lies in its concise structure. The narrative can be completed in a relatively short amount of time, making it a focused experience without unnecessary filler. However, multiple branching paths and endings add replay value. Revisiting earlier decisions can reveal alternative character dynamics or deeper layers of context that were not immediately apparent. This encourages thoughtful replays, particularly for players interested in uncovering every narrative outcome and fully understanding the emotional spectrum of the story. Return to Ash does not attempt to reinvent the visual novel genre, nor does it introduce experimental mechanics. Its power lies in its sincerity and its commitment to exploring universal themes through intimate storytelling. For players who appreciate character-driven narratives and choice-based progression, it offers a contemplative journey that lingers beyond its runtime. While those seeking action or intricate gameplay systems may find it limited, fans of emotional storytelling will likely find value in its reflective tone and carefully constructed dialogue. Ultimately, it stands as a compact yet resonant exploration of loss, connection, and the possibility of finding peace in unexpected places. Rating: 8/10
idc if its corny this has left me more appreciative of the friendships i have and really just longing to be a part of the world again. i have some difficult realities ive been trying not to face. so yea i guess play this. its p good
beautiful game and amazing story :) i teared up a lot,, this game definitely means a lot to me

Get the fanfic writers on this IMMEDIATELY. I am too attached to these characters
literally just finished all of the endings. This game was AMAZING and way too relatable (my names friggen ashley too like holy moly), the characters were all so cute and so rich with story and personality (i guess the personality part doesnt really apply if you dont do the one ending with the guy (not specifying cause spoilers just in case!!!)). my bad decision making led me to getting the bad endings before i got more than one other ending. (┬┬﹏┬┬) anyways great game!!!!
