detective games are so cool i wish japan was real
A really fun game! The mystery was pretty nice and had a good plot. For those that never played this kind of adventure game, this game is a very good introduction to the gameplay style. The localization was pretty good too.
Full review at: https://thegamehoard.com/2023/09/02/retro-mystery-club-vol-1-the-ise-shima-case-pc/ An appealing approach to its old school presentation makes Retro Mystery Club Vol.1: The Ise-Shima Case charming and in broad strokes its narrative manages its dramatic moments and likeable characters well, but this visual novel’s mystery feels like it could have been unveiled in a more effective manner. The tale of a string of murders having strange ties to the pearl industry gives the mystery some intriguing elements to explore, but periods where it feels things are stagnating and the limited impact your own investigation has on the course of events does mean the plot doesn’t progress at the best pace. The mystery never goes too long without a new hook though, but a tighter course of events could have better invested the player instead of giving them a little too much time to cool down between meaningful revelations.
translation a bit janky at times, but a very charming adventure mystery.
Very fun if you like NES-style adventure games. Great artwork, simple but effective sounds and music, and a surprisingly twisty story with fun characters. I found a few unfortunate typos, but nothing that took me out of the game. Worked well with my Bluetooth 8BitDo controller. On to the sequel—and hopefully more volumes to come!
Retro Mystery Club Vol.1: The Ise-Shima Case is practically made for fans of The Portopia Serial Murder Case, The Okhotsk Disappearance and Famicom Detective Club games. It's unapologetic in its presentation, too. Limited colour palette, low pixel count character sprites, limited polyphony soundtrack and menu system practically lifted from the PC88 version of Portopia. The synopsis of the game sounds promising to all detective game fans: there's a murder in a strange circumstance, and we need to travel to the countryside to try and solve it. Unfortunately, the investigation didn't quite grab me as much as the progenitor of this game did. The pacing seems a little off, at least from my point of view. I found the core mystery is not quite as interesting as I would like. The investigation (which took a little less than two in-game weeks) can feel a little tedious, and the progress of the case seems to take a rather glacial turn around the mid-point of the game. Of course, there's an argument to be made that this is just the true nature of police work, but I was expecting more dramatic turns, or perhaps a little finesse from a video game. Still, the pace finally picked up for last third of the game. There are tense moments to be had as the game is near conclusion. There's a homage to a certain game mechanic used in Portopia and Okhotsk which I find delightful. Perhaps this game is a difficult one to recommend, but still worth a gander if you're a fan of the ADV games it draws its inspiration from.
This first game in the Retro Mystery Club series is a worthy tribute to the detective games of old. It wears its inspiration on its sleeve but is not slavish to the more irritating aspects of the original games. I found the story interesting and the gameplay quite easy to progress whether I'd taken a break between sessions or not. The music was excellent at giving the right tone and the graphics complement the old school premise. I'd highly recommend this to people who like this kind of thing already. If you're a newcomer you may want to start elsewhere.
Tightly-plotted, a lot of fun to play. And makes me hungry. I love the attention to food in these games.
