Really great puzzle/maze game. It seems very elementary at first, but quite soon you realize that it can be tremendously challenging. Very well-thought design and mechanics. Good story and artwork as well.
Reflection of Mine is an ambitious and emotionally charged puzzle experience that fuses mechanics and theme into a single, often unsettling journey. Developed and published by Redblack Spade, the game takes place entirely within the fractured psyche of its protagonist, Lilly Witchgan, and builds its identity around the idea that inner conflict is not just a narrative concept but a mechanical reality. From the opening moments, the game establishes a somber, introspective tone, signaling that this will be less about conventional problem-solving and more about navigating a symbolic mental landscape. The defining feature of Reflection of Mine is its dual-character control system. Players simultaneously guide two versions of Lilly, each representing a different personality, through mirrored but subtly divergent environments. Every input affects both characters at once, meaning each movement must be carefully considered in relation to two separate spaces. A path that is safe for one may be lethal for the other, and success depends on learning to anticipate hazards, memorize layouts, and coordinate actions with precision. This mechanic is not just a clever puzzle hook; it reinforces the narrative idea that these identities are inseparable, bound together in both survival and failure. As the game progresses, puzzles steadily increase in complexity. Early stages introduce the basic concept of synchronized movement and shared consequence, while later sections layer in traps, shifting terrain, visual deception, and timing-based challenges that demand patience and careful planning. Trial and error is an expected part of the experience, and progress often comes from repeated attempts rather than immediate insight. For players who enjoy methodical, mentally taxing puzzles, this structure can be deeply rewarding, though it may feel punishing to those who prefer more forgiving design. Narrative elements are delivered subtly, often through environmental cues, symbolic imagery, and brief story fragments rather than lengthy exposition. Reflection of Mine does not tell its story in a straightforward way; instead, it invites players to interpret meaning through repetition, failure, and visual metaphor. Themes of identity, self-conflict, guilt, and repression are woven into both the visuals and the mechanics, creating a sense that each puzzle solved is also a step deeper into Lilly’s mind. This approach gives the game a distinctive atmosphere, though it also leaves room for ambiguity that some players may find compelling and others frustrating. Visually, the game adopts a minimalist, moody aesthetic that complements its psychological focus. Levels are often stark and dreamlike, emphasizing contrast, shadow, and symbolic elements rather than detailed realism. The mirrored presentation of the two characters reinforces the sense of duality, while subtle visual differences between their environments hint at deeper narrative meaning. The art style may be simple on a technical level, but it is carefully chosen to support the game’s emotional tone and thematic weight. Sound design plays a crucial supporting role. The soundtrack leans toward ambient and haunting compositions that heighten tension without overwhelming the player. Audio cues reinforce danger and failure, making mistakes feel impactful and emotionally charged. Silence is also used effectively, allowing moments of quiet to amplify the sense of isolation and introspection that permeates the experience. Reflection of Mine is not without its challenges and controversies. The difficulty curve can be steep, particularly in later sections where precise movement and memorization are essential. Frequent restarts and strict failure conditions may test players’ patience, especially when progress requires near-perfect execution. Additionally, the game’s portrayal of mental health themes has drawn mixed reactions. While some players appreciate its symbolic exploration of internal conflict, others feel that it relies too heavily on dramatic tropes, potentially oversimplifying or misrepresenting complex psychological conditions. Replay value largely depends on a player’s tolerance for repetition and challenge. While there are multiple puzzles and a substantial runtime for a puzzle-focused game, the core mechanics remain consistent throughout. Revisiting levels can feel more like endurance than discovery, as the primary variation comes from increased difficulty rather than new systems. As such, the game is best suited for players who enjoy mastering demanding mechanics rather than those seeking constant novelty. In the end, Reflection of Mine stands as a distinctive and uncompromising puzzle game that fully commits to its concept. Its strength lies in how closely its mechanics align with its themes, creating an experience where gameplay and narrative are inseparable. While its difficulty, repetition, and thematic choices may limit its appeal, players who appreciate challenging puzzles with psychological depth will find it a memorable and thought-provoking journey that lingers long after the final puzzle is solved. Rating: 7/10
Date of completion: February 11, 2024 I bought this game for the unique plot, what with it being horror-themed yet realistically freakish. Sadly I must give it a SEVERE dis-recommendation due to the soul-crushing puzzle gameplay. Here's the singular guide made by this saint. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=870984158 Even so, you'll have to pay attention to the guide, preferably on your phone due to remaining eye contact to all the required precise directions, which makes it even more hard with the levels having obstacles; I nearly did a ragequit on Level 4-3 hard mode. So yeah, the pain of the play outweighs the pleasure of the plot; go watch it on YouTube instead.
I am 32 years old. My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old. When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand I desperately needed to ensure I could continue providing. Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side. With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I must admit I didn't beat the game, nor did I play as much as some of you. In fact, I may have played this game for only a day or two. That being said, after doing so, I had a new joy and hope for life. I managed to leave behind the pain and suffering that had been thrust upon me. I could experience the joy and happiness of other people. I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay. After realizing this, I turned off the game and went back to work. My hand hurt a lot, but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and became the father I needed to be at that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving like. Today, I am close friends with the mother of my children. We don't fight, argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents and friends. Now I have 3 children. My third child is, wait, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my separation, and we just unexpectedly stumbled into each other's lives. We have been dating for a year and are very happy together. Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that. Thank you.
