Just a promotion for the movie. Devs abandoned it. So much potential. Loved the book. Enjoyed the movie. Leaving this to die was a huge disappointment.
Here's the thing. I dont understand why they would release only a few games at a time instead of all they got on the spot. The avatar creator is missing and that should be the first you do in the oasis, right? The apartment looks nice, but definitly needs interactable objects! totally missed the oppurtnurnity to make a great, interactable, good looking room! But you dont want to spend more than 2 minutes in your own apartment in the oasis since there is nothing you can do. Games: Rise of the Gunters: + Best locomotion i have experienced yet, doesnt even lag or something + Really cool weapons, blast em! + Cool Music and Maps - You dont really have to go in cover, feel to OP, to easy Battle of the Oasis: +nice idea +cool enemies -no movement involved here, just bound to a place -lags, especially when the IOI spider attacks -not much to do Smash: +very intense, gets you sweating +fun -not much to it -has "Levels" wich you can play through in 15 minutes Gauntlet: + Nice design, enemies look creepy good +intense -worst teleporting system i have ever seen -always shows you annoying tips -too hard because of bad teleportation and bad bow function Avatar creator: -not even released, doesnt make sense -you can pick from some ugly premade chars Scoreboard: How does it even work I still like this overall game alot. RPO has been my favorite book for years and is a great movie, but the VR experience really lacks. Hope they release all experiences soon and do some work on the apartment!

I'm a huge fan of the movie, and expecting a game of the movie to be released so early, I expected it to be a bit under-developed. And it was to some extent. It's very fun when you're playing it the first couple times, but it gets old VERY fast. It was a hell of a ride the first few times I played it, but people will move on after a bit. The Oasis was a social site for games and also social interactions. I bet that if this game still gets updated regularly, within a year or two we might be on the first step towards that. But it was very fun. 6.5/10
Being a longtime beta tester, I know what to expect when a game is listed as "beta." It means that the flaws are still being evaluated and fixed. In effect, when you take on this game you know that it will have bugs. I'm not sure why a lot of reviewers here are expecting a perfect game. That being said, I LOVED this experience, from the starting point, to the main "safe area", to the selection of worlds to visit. I think this follows the idea of the Oasis perfectly. I could enter worlds where I could get a hell of a workout and play solo or enter worlds where I could game with others. Yes, the social aspect is "coming soon," and we have a limited number of avatars to select, and it crashed on me twice in a most spectacular way - but you know what? I'm going have a lot of fun following the development of this game and seeing what they come up with next. Cause in the Oasis, the sky's the limit.
I don't understand why so many people are slamming this game. 1. It's FREE 2. It's in Beta... not even a full release 3. There are very easy ways for the developers to expand this game wether it be by adding Multiplayer and/or more "worlds" Every world is like its own game... right? Every world was made by a different studio or developer... right? So of course there are going to be differences in the locomotion and how true the game is to the movie. From what I can tell, this is meant to be like the OASIS and NOT like the movie with you playing out Parzival's (Wade Watts') adventure. I would HIGHLY RECCOMMEND this game because of it being free and looking amazing. The graphics and animations for HUDs and Menus are very well done and even if the AI don't have the best animations, the texture quality is truly amazing. My friends and I have competitions side-by-side through discord on ROTG (Rise of the Gunters). The game runs at a very consistent pace where three of us can sart the game at the same time and finish as well. And the friends leaderboard updates *virtually* instantly so we can compare scores. TL;DR: Amazing Graphics, room to expand, fluid gameplay, and it's all FREE
Played On: HTC Vive
Let's just go ahead and rip the bandaid right off. Ready Player One: OASIS beta is nothing but a shameless piece of abandonware that was shovelled out for the sake of movie promotion. Launched on March 23, 2018, just in time for the film to come out on March 30 of the same year, this title has not received one single update since it was dumped onto Steam. So basically you start out in the Oasis hub, and you can move to different worlds; it works just like the book/movie, and the whole aim here is to emulate the Oasis. That part is pretty cool, and the idea of having a massive virtual world to explore and live in is something that's exciting. For a hub that houses only five mini-games this release is a hefty hunk of meat to download; coming in at a whopping 15GB. The graphics are on par with pretty much every other current VR release, as are all of the mechanics with the exception that there is only teleport locomotion available. You got Battle for the Oasis, a standard sci-fi shooter. Then there's Rise of the Gunters... another standard sci-fi shooter but with co-op. Gauntlet, named after the real game franchise and it's an archery-based dungeon crawler with some of the worst implementation of teleport locomotion I've ever witnessed. Smash, which is just racket ball. Fracture, which is just more racket ball. The idea of having a massive virtual world to explore and live in is something that's both exciting and scary. Hopefully someone out there can capitalize on the idea and make something better than say, this hunk of trash or Steam Home VR. A place where everyone is connected, and you can go to any game that you like at any time; spend virtual currency to make your avatar look better and all that jazz. It's an absolutely fantastic idea that has not been achieved yet. If you're looking for it to be achieved with Ready Player One: OASIS beta, then you're barking up the wrong tree. Don't hold your breath for this one to get an update ever. You can play the same instances of these games in longer and better variations with other, more established titles. Nothing here is impressive, it's simply a let down. Currently the whole Oasis consists of 4 mini games by different developers that feel like demos and the games aren't connected in any real way. 1 game is a dungeon crawler, 2 are shooters, and last one is VR Pong. All games are single player. Some have optional coop, none have pvp multiplayer. The best minigame is one of the shooters, Gunter, by Drifter. This title will be abandoned within 6 months. At time of writing I didn't see any reviews with more than 2 hours... If you're looking for a VR app to try demos of various VR gametypes, check out "The Lab" by Valve (also free and much more polished) If you're looking for more Ready Player One content, read the book.
I actually really enjoyed the beta for the most part, N my daughter loves playing the Smash mini game. But for sum reason now when I try to play, Rise of the gunthers and the Gauntlet one, Im getting a double image so everything is blurry. I am using a WMR Samsung Odyssey. I hope the developers can fix it soon so I can continue to enjoy playing it ;)
This game used to be way more fun. When they dropped support for planet doom it was game over. That was obviously the coolest part of the experience being multiplayer as well. I know this game was mostly just a promotional advertisement, given its free and all too. But that was still a very cool part of it that saw a player base for a while
the game was very promising at the time .. of course it's abandoned by its developers now ..
