This game is not ready for a 13$ price tag. 3.99$ would be a much more appropriate price. The game is as bare bones as you can get without having major issues. There's no option to have the text just appear, so you're forced to wait for the text to scroll every single time you go to a new screen (even with the "fast text" setting on). There's no real epicness to any of the quests. They usually involve rolling a d20 3-4 times before the quest is over. There's no differentiation in the "combat" between different monsters. Everything dies within one or two dice rolls. The quests are all just copies of one another with different names and images thrown in. For example: The minigame in Fallout4 "Grognak The Barbarian" has far more design and interactivity with choices and consequences that this. I think the bones are good, but they need a real story developer to create a real campaign with more choices that hold weight, more items, more reason for the stats, etc etc. It feels like a demo, and I feel ripped off for paying 13$ for it.
QuestBoard has a lot of potential, assuming a community appears. It is a shell of game. On a website, you can create your own stories that will play out in the game. As for the game itself, you are an adventurer, you enter a tavern. You approach the quest board and pick a story. It is a Choose Your Own Adventure-style quest. You usually have 2-3 options. Some options will require a dice roll based on a stat(Strength, Charisma ect). If you complete the story you get gold and exp. Gold is used to buy health potions, weapons and armor, the latter 2 affecting stat rolls. EXP is used to gain levels, where you add a stat modifier of 1 to a stat. And if you die, you get gold deducted and reappear in your room. Outside of questing, there's not terribly much to QuestBoard. You can visit your room to rest up and restore health. You can visit the store. You can also play bar games where you get gold. One game is a dice roll game, beat the dealer's roll. Another is an enemy gauntlet. There's also an NPC reputation system, but I'm not sure what it does exactly. As for graphics and sound, everything is in retro green and black. There's a nice chiptune soundtrack to go along with it. As I said at the beginning, QuestBoard is game with limitless potential. There are 200 pre-made quests in the game. The real draw is that you can create your own stories at the link above, then upload them to the Steam workshop for players to download. Currently there are only 2 stories, created by the developer. More will come I'm sure, but will enough appear to sustain it? And how many of those stories will be X-rated tales of bedding maidens, or even worth your time if G rated? The answer to those questions is I don't know. Still, I do hope an audience appears!
In my Last Review we made a Journey to the Times of the C64. So, dear Readers, let´s stay there. The Golden Age of C64 and AMIGA 500 was also a golden Age of Text RPG´s. Remembering HITCHHIKERSS GUIDE TO THE GALAXY and not to forget the legendary ZORK Series. Read Games like a Book and make decissions. Guided by few Pictures find your own Adventure. And that brings us here. So welcome to QUESTBOARD! Well, QUESTBOARD is a homage to these good old Retro Games, but it is more. It is a Mix of these Retro Text Adventures and good old Board Games like HERO QUEST or AD&D. In Questboard you have to roll the Dice. The Dice is deciding your Fate. And yes, it is truly depending on Luck. Like in real Board Games. If you role a 1 then you role a 1 and have to live with the Consequences. If you role a 20 then you role a 20 and enjoy the consequences. Like in Real Board Games. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3749259010 In QUESTBOARD you are a Hero on Adventure. In the Beginning choose a Name and enter the City. Enter the Tavernbar, here you have a Room. The Tavernbar is the Main Spot from where can go everywhere. As the Name said, go to the Questboard, choose a Quest and solve it. Make Decissions, roll the Dice and get your Rewards … or loose. And believe me, there are many Quests. Use your earned Gold for Heal Potions or better Weapons and Level up by gaining experience. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3749259447 QUESTBOARD has an absolutly Retro Charm. The Pixel Graphics and Retro Tunes are like a Time Machine into the C64 and A500 Era. I have had sooooo much fun with it, Feeling again like the small Boy sitting in the evening in the Basement at the Computer and fascinating playing Games like this. Nothing more to say, it´s a Little Pearl for me. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3749266797 Thanks to the Devs for inviting me to this wonderfull Retro Journey, i love it. And thank YOU for Reading.
You like this Review? You want more? Visit and follow our AWG Curator! You`re always welcome. Lovely little clickthrough game about vignettes in adventuring. Remarkbly simple, extremely reliant on RNG. If you're OK with your games being little more than simple-choice short stories with incremental improvements, have at it. The decisions are simple, there is a small amount of risk/reward. Failure isn't all that punishing, and resetting your stats is just a bedrest away. In my opinion it's a good one to consider when on a deep discount but I do not recommend at full price; it's just too light for the ask. Granted I have not played for too long, but I have advanced my character two weeks and up to around level 10. There's a lot of reused sprites and scenes - which is fine - but for full price and with this level of fidelity I'd expect more. But I won't kick it any further, because the truth is I've enjoyed coming back and having a little three-minute adventure every now and then. I think Questboard is a delightful little experience, provided you know exactly what you're going to get - and you're already inclined to like it. Thumbs up for a good little game on sale, but more content* required to justify the regular price at the time of writing. / * - post edit: not the right word. there's A LOT of content for QuestBoard through the large number of quests themselves, but the *systems* behind them feel too simple. There's an illusion of choice but if the goal is quest completion then the choices are obvious. It would have been nice to see more 'connection' here between the quests created and how the systems and the player interact. Remember though, I still like the game for what it is.
Questboard is a return to the old days of simplicity. It does not seek to reinvent a genre but works to make you remember one so long forgotten to time.
this game is great! creative style and stories 8/10 PROs the art style amazes me, the amount of detail in character portraits is insane. I appreciate that the player can see what they rolled and the bonuses added for every roll. The quest board has new options every time you check it giving the game a lot of replayability. The character names are giving fantasy name generator in the best way. the storyline is subtle at first but quickly grabs your attention as a pattern emerges. theres a monk with a gambling problem and a tavern keeper that tells jokes. Goblins, giant spiders and harpies alongside lots of great fantasy enemies. Theres a man on a path to redemention and a priest i wanna call dad. I loved playing this game!!! CONS - all very small issues i don't understand how or when conditions are applied. I wish items had a description of what they do after they're equipped. Sometimes failing has no consequence and the game lets you just keep retrying, i don't love that. Sometimes the dialogue options are unclear, and i wish we could ask for more money AFTER we get all the details on the mission. I wish that different monsters did different attacks ex: the harpie could sing and force the player to make a con save for x effect or the spider could poison the player ect i would kill for bernadette
Questboard is a pretty simple yet fun game about rolling dice and taking on various quests to fight a range of monsters to get gold. The premise and gameplay mechanic is pretty simple, but what's fun is seeing all of the 200 premade quests and engaging with each quest to see how the story in each quest enfolds. That being said Questboard is not worth $12.99, but is easily worth buying if it's heavily reduced on a steam sale for a few $. That being said I had a lot of fun with Questboard. However you can get through all of the 200 quests in a very short amount of time. Although the minigames are worth playing if your into card games with dice, fishing with dice or even a gauntlet challenge of all the monsters you have faced so far with dice. Overall, I give Questboard a 6/10 and would totally recommend this game if your a fan of short adventure style stories while also using dice to navigate the story. Keep in mind you can also create your own "quests" to use in quest board which is also cool but I did not engage in that but feels like you can keep the game going even after you finished all of the 200 quests.
This is a fun little throwback to old school TTRPGs and choose your own adventure / gamebooks. I feel like it might start to get repetitive, but the game does add new features and mini games as you play.
This game is delightful. Mechanically, it's very simple, and you can probably get through it in an afternoon or two. But it's got heart, and is very charmingly written, and will absolutely transport you to the fantasy world it's creating. A fantastic testament to the fact that gameplay and writing can absolutely carry an experience, far and above spending millions on a AAA experience with a ton of bells and whistles but absolutely no heart or soul.
