My eyes literally hurt after looking at the graphics of this disaster. "Project XLOWS - Keyboard Apocalypse TM" is a typing tutorial, and like all of these "edutainment" games, it's not making education better, but it does make gaming worse. What do you do in the game? It plays almost like an old school text adventure, but typing the commands is time limited (you need to decide your action then type it before the eyeball eats you or whatever else is going on in the game). The "game" here is of a pretty low technical standard. The implementation is basic minimum effort stuff, more like a weekend project rather than a serious, professionally made product... and it's bad even compared to most amateur made games. An experimental piece... and the experiment is "Can I spend on Steam Direct and then call myself a game dev?" While that $100 spend on Steam Direct probably made the developers feel good about themselves, we have to ask why this kind of thing is good for gamers. It isn't. The graphics here are particularly awful, low poly amateur graphics so bad that if you did a 3D modeling course and turned these in for your grade, you wouldn't just fail, you'd be expelled and they'd take out a restraining order. This looks so bad that it actually stands out as one of the worst looking games on Steam. Quite an accomplishment. It's a big contributor to the failure of the game to attract gamers despite having no up-front cost. Gaming is a primarily visual medium, and if developers want to succeed, they must understand that it's not an area for compromise. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. This is "free" enough (not every "free" game in the "free" section is truly free, there's usually some hidden price tag), at least you won't be expected to spend any more money after you download this, but just because something is free doesn't mean it's good, and the cost of a game is more than just financial, your time is valuable too. Despite having no up-front cost, this failed to appeal to the 130 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB shows this peaked at only 2 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? What's the verdict? Not this time. This isn't worth downloading. While this won't cost you any money, you get what you pay for, and sometimes, even when the game is free, it's still not enough.
Before I played Project XLOWS: Keyboard Apocalypse TM, I had a small pp, no friends, no gf, depression, and no life. These things havent changed, but the game is pretty good
2/10 A speed typing game with stub gfx/audio. Good: - free So-so: - it has some basic kind of combat/RPG system though it's hard to figure it out because of the messy UI - music is kinda okay (it's stock tracks from Unity sci-fi demo) though not sure they fit the setting as the game seems to be fantasy themed? Bad: - there are 4-5 minigames all of which involve speed typing. The first has you typing commands like "launch fireball", "move left". This reminded me old MUDs from the early 1990s. I mean, that's, like, a terrible control mode for even an indie RPG nowadays, cmon. Instead, the game should obviously have on-screen buttons, keyboard shortcuts etc - in the other minigame you type in worlds fast as they move towards you. This reminded me an NSFW game "SEXTS" which was kinda fun to play at least for 5-15 mins since the words were sexy and there were cute images as a reward. Here it's random words and it's simply meaningless. - in another you have trivia-like multiple choice questions but have to type the full reply, not just its number or A-B-C - in another you type in whole sentences (it's a string equality comparison, so it's case-sensitive and needs the punctuation to be precise)... anyways, none of this fun or even could be considered a game by a hardcore Steam user. And it doesn't help that there are 3D models moving on the screen "fighting" you. There are no real tactics involved, it's just speed typing - well, gfx are stubs. UI is also a stub. In general, one shouldn't put out games with stub gfx on a commercial store because it doesn't look serious, the game gets pointless negative reviews and ruins the dev's motivation. Itch.io may be a better place, and you don't have to pay $100 to Valve Sorry to be the first one to leave a negative review but maybe the dev should just hear from somebody that his efforts might be spent on something else that's actually a game, not just an app to train speed typing. If he is a gamer he probably has favorite genres where he has some idea. Unless it's a purely learning project, like, "put together anything in Unity and upload to Steam". Best of luck. Great game. The gameplay is pretty fast and might be a bit hard. Some levels feel a lot harder than other ones. In my opinion tutorial (or the last one) was the hardest one so far. Seems a bit short, but very good for a game that only came out a day ago. I've started playing 20 minutes ago and i've already beaten it and bought every character. I think you should add more special things to characters so there would be an actual reason to buy them except just skins. Very good game, keep up the good work!
Leaving recommendation as it is free and maybe will work correctly for others. Clearly a single developer who put time into this basic gameplay and I like being able to support that idea. However I played the tutorial and then it shows that i won. The details of my win cover the three menu options to go any farther in the game and i have to Alt + F4 out of the game. Wanted to support the developer and be able to leave a decent review but after playing twice and having to quit as soon as i complete the level with no way to move past the tutorial i can't say much else other then... I tried. Good luck. Maybe it's my ultra wide screen making the menu buttons covered?
More fun than I expected! Kind of like Mavis Beacon Typing combined with an actual adventure game. The levels are quite different from one another, giving the game more surprises than you might expect from such a small project. There's a lot here that could be expanded, I'll check back from time to time.
I may be biased because I know the developer, but this game is really fun and has a lot of potential! Give it a shot if you want to improve your typing and brain at the same time.
