This review praises the strong visual and thematic design of Vector Arcade's platformer prog.1, but also discusses its relatively low content.
[. . .] Ultimately, I definitely recommend playing prog.1. In fact, as stated at length above, my biggest complaint about it is simply that there is less prog.1 than I would ideally want, since I was enjoying the game so much. prog.1 is enjoyable to play, visually strong, moderately challenging, and quite well-polished. Genius in its simplicity, but growing educated gameplay, supported with retro pixelated story graphics and backing soundtrack, which just leaves you smiling and enjoying the experience, zx81 style ... like its 1981 again. The game is a simple platformer, where you jump from one platform to another in the digital universe, all of which disintegrate making your choice through platforms a careful one. You need to collect all jewels to exit and complete the level. Its a very very simple but well throught out game. 48 excruciatingly fun Levels says it all !!
fun, challenging, nice soundtrack, ... and frusriting you will die a lot, but the feeling of beating a hard level is satisfying
Prog.1 is a short precision platformer, like Super Meat Boy, who's main idea is keeping you moving by making platforms disappear after you touch them. It's a neat idea, and well implemented, with good visual cues for things disappearing and reappearing, though the graphics are a bit on the small side, so some people may have a hard time seeing them. Unfortunately, the controls do feel a bit off. Maybe because there's no momentum, which takes some getting used to, maybe something else. Still, I did mostly get used to it, and it certainly could have been worse. Frustration-wise, I'd say it was mildly frustrating, so not bad for the type of game. The story is fairly basic. The few short cutscenes have a nice style, but there's nothing really substantial in the less than 5 minutes given to them. Sadly, no skip button if you want to redo levels later. The game is short. If Steam's right, it took less than an hour for me to complete all 48 levels. There are some challenge modes, 100 lives/1 life mode and double-jump (easy) mode. I may have beaten 100 lives first time round, but I don't think I'll go back to do it officially. Overall, despite some issues, if you're keen for more precision platforming, this may very well be worth a look, though I wouldn't spend much.
prog.1 is a very fun little puzzle/platformer. Each level has you collecting objects in the enviroment while the platforms beneath you are being corrupted by your character. The platforming feels good for the most part, but I felt at times the jumping was a little unresponsive or the momentum while jumping was inconsistant. (I was also playing on a keyboard, so your mileage may vary.) Overall though, a fun game that is for sure worth taking a look at.
When I bought this game I was hoping for a nice platforming experience that I would be able to complete in a reasonable amount of time. Now that we have pretenses out of the way, this game is quite difficult, and not always in the best ways. The levels quite quickly get to the point where they are pretty large. Normally this is a good thing in platformers, but I was sometimes left wandering about in this maze of platforms that vanished behind me, wondering if this lower path I kept trying to get past would eventually get me to the door, or if all of my attempts at getting past these obstacles were meaningless. All the while, platform vanishing kept me at a pace I didn't feel comfortable with leaving little to no room for error, and forcing me to preform tasks with the controls I was not yet comfortable with. Not to mention that so little of the story is gone through between levels that you forget what is even going on. Too be fair though, the mechanics are nice, 'boss' levels are put in, and secrets are hidden to reward you for exploring the levels, but unfortunately, the disappearing platform mechanic makes it a pain to explore levels because more than half of the platforms you jump on end up disappearing by the time your are halfway to the next one, effectively punishing exploration. And the global cycles just add on to the punishment. Vanishing platforms are fine, but when a third of the platforms you want to jump onto will kill you if you don't wait for it to turn off, vanishing platforms become the bane of your existence. Now, maybe I'm just terrible at platforming, but to me all these things added up to be an experience that I didn't really enjoy, being too fast-paced and punishing.
Hard, Tricky and even frustrating on the beginning. But yes since you get the hang with this game you can beat it in a 30 - 40 minutes row. If you are the type of person who enjoys "Rage Games", platform-like, that has a certain difficulty, Prog.1 is for you. If you get easily frustrated with "Dying a lot" games, I do not recommend it, because hell yeah, you'll die a lot here.
A common problem with many games is that they're zoomed too far in, but this one is zoomed ao far out that it's hard to pick up on essential details. In addition the controls are imprecise and there's this one level that actually seems unbeatable and boots you back to the menu. Avoid this one.
Contagious!
https://youtu.be/neioaxGweDk The lack of a shadow and slight stiffness to the jumping does bring down overall pack some, but there is still plenty of style and charm to make this game worth checking out.
