Pro Jank Footy

The game is a lot of fun. Really enjoying the old school arcade sports feel of it, and it uses humor well. I've seen some complaints about the CRT filters but for me I think it's fine. The music is cool too. It would be nice to have a few more QOL features and preferably some other single player modes. For now, if you are considering buying the game, you have to approach it as an arcade sports game. With NES Ice Hockey or NBA JAM or RBI Baseball growing up, the fact that these games didn't have a ton of features didn't bother me because it was more about having quick matches with friends. If you have a setup where you can play this game for a couple hours on the couch with friends, you'll have a great time. Just keep your expectations in check.

This is more of a 'meh' review of the game. I'm keeping it positive because it has potential and I'm really looking forward to playing this more and having a laugh with some work folks. At it's core, it does what it says on the box, it's footy, it's wacky, its funny and very Australian. Things that would make the game more enjoyable for me personally: - Fix the UI bugs. The game doesnt seem to get on well with the steam overlay at all and will randomly pop steam overlay menus when selecting menu options in the game - Fix the holding the ball mechanic. I cop it multiple times a game when tackled fairly resulting in the other team getting a free - Fix the automatic player selection. It needs to follow the direction of play closer and/or create inputs for directional selection - even just forward and back would be good. single button selection makes it way too difficult and you can easily miss a play rotating through players - this is especially problematic when the player closest to play isn't automatically selected. - Kick accuracy could probably do with a bit of tweaking - When hitting out of the ruck, player selection towards a receiving player is woefully slow and often will end up losing the ball very quickly even if you win the contest - Kicking out after a behind is scored - often the player will end up facing and kicking the wrong way resulting in another behind for the opposing team - Quite often what looks like should be a mark is not recorded as one I TOTALLY get that this isn't a sports sim game and that true to the name, it's gotta be some degree of jank. But the above issues have been genuine bummers.

Aussie Rules is a hard game to get right in a computer game. Australian aerial ping-pong has a wonky ball, seagull-on-a-chip contests, and inconsistent umpiring. This is a mad-cap party game captures all of that, and it's so insane that your skill level doesn't matter for too much when playing with others. That means everyone can play... badly... and on purpose. That makes it much like the real sport it's apeing. It's a hilarious mashup of NBA Jam and that old NES Aussie Rules Footy game us oldtimers used to play. All the weirdness of this game comes straight out of #IDARB, including the ridiculous commentary. The jank sets in when you get a goal scored against you, you get the opportunity to play a card that makes the game just that little bit more stupid and unpredictable. The comedy contains a lot of in-jokes which you will get if you're from South Australia or Adelaide specifically. My only complaint with the game is that the commentary is funny the first time around and then drags a bit once you've heard it all. Also it's hard to actually play skillfully, due to it's party game nature. Passing to other players is a problem as they're never in position, as is trying to mark predictably. Your selected player often goes MIA forcing you to switch all the time, often letting the opposing player run with the ball right into goal. Sadly in most cases, your tactics will involve thumping the ball up the pitch and trying to avoid getting tackled. You can play against the computer but it's not easy and will likely bury you under the bounce plate. This game is best played with your mates. The Port Noarlunga Chips are probably the best team in the game! Up the Chips!
