60/100
Primal Fears is basically a sequel to Dead Horde. Unlike Dead Horde which was abysmal, this one is kinda good. Don't expect anything amazing, it's still a budget indie title, but Primal Fears improves on Dead Horde in every way. Gameplay is pretty standard. You select a level and kill [strike]zombies[/strike] mutants until you reach the end. This time around the maps feel organic instead of being a single path to follow. In Dead Horde the only form of objective in a level was to fight a horde until a gate opens up. This game kept those moments but also added parts where you have to find a key or bomb to open up the path. It's not much but at least that has you exploring the level. There's a little more diversity in enemies now and they're all far less bullet spongey. The weapons all feel functional, but R.I.P the powerhouse shotgun from the first game. The gatling gun still takes way too long to start shooting, but the enemies don't behave like homing missiles now and deal a lot less damage so you can afford to take a few hits while the barrel starts spinning. It's still nothing special and there's better games for the price, but it seems like the devs put a lot more effort in this game than their previous one which is always good to see.

In an effort to work through my Steam library, I'm trying to play each game for 30-60 minutes and then provide a review. Here's my review for Primal Fears: - It's very dated in just about every way. Visuals, AI, gameplay, environment, etc. - Misleading utility of weapons. Turrets are MUCH more expensive than frag grenades in this game, but grenades proved by far more useful. Same applies to the default AR versus other expensive weapons. - You have to hold the use key for like 8 seconds on certain actions for no reason, such as opening a door you have a set of keys too. - I'm kinda certain they got their "Turn camera left/right" controls backwards? Although I may be misunderstanding what they mean All in all, it's not a BAD game per se, but I can't recommend paying $4 (or $10 without a sale, wew), when there are flash games I've enjoyed more for free.
Thumbs up!
