A puzzle game that asks YOU to animate the main characters. In the same spirit as Toribash or QWOP, Posable Heroes is a physics game that rewards precision and physical manoeuvres. Pose your characters and press play to see what happens. Keep modifying the poses until you create a full movie that solves each challenge.
Follow our curator page: IndieGems if you like and want to see more reviews like this one.
Posable Heroes is a really neat action movie sequence simulator with nice situation-dependent physics that is newly released to Steam in Early Access. Puzzle-solving by changing poses in an action sequence certainly makes this game unique. The campaign mode includes a overarching story and individual scenes to accomplish goals to move on. In addition, there is a level editor for those who enjoy tinkering and creating new puzzles, though this still needs some work to make it easier and more user friendly (Played pre-release beta v0.9.1.2). Each scene is a small part of an action movie, the story is one that you will discover as you play. While the story is not important, you should at least pay attention to the locations of where you are, because the gravity simulation changes based on your scene location. You will easily see from the environmental design around you as well. Or you can just play and test things out. There is an in-game teaching set of hints in the beginning, and that is good enough to be a tutorial, because trial and error is the best way to learn this game. It's also more fun that way. Some of the poses to do what you want may look really funny, but you will definitely have fun putting it all together. The game is very dynamic, and each puzzle requires your consideration for how to adjust your poses and movements in relationship to time. Because everything is happening in real time, and if you decide a pose is necessary with respect to the previous set of poses, there requires a time from the time that you decide the pose until it can be done. This is less of an issue in earlier levels, and will become more important later on. Please be aware that even though the physics simulations are very good, they are not perfect. Not everything will make sense if you think long and hard about how everything should act or react, but all in all, the majority of what you will expect to see by thinking about it will occurr accordingly. In addition, there is some parts of the simulation that are seemingly a bit more random, because the slightest protrusion of the tucked arms or a different orientation of the head will result in a completely different outcome. Of course you can think of this as the Butterfly Effect or thinking about weather patterns, the smallest change at a previous location/time will cause drastic changes down the road. Fortunately you have complete control of time, so you can easily reverse any undesirable effects. Speaking of complete control of the time sequence, you can pause, move back in time, edit, etc. at any point, even if you encounter a failure state. All you have to do is go back in time and edit your poses in order to succeed. This is extremely user-friendly and makes it more reasonable to try to go after the challenge coins in each level. Plus if you are editing the middle of an action sequence, there are projected result shadows that you you about how things will work out. So you don't have to put up a pose, run the movie sequence, watch and see what happens, then go back and edit. Though these non-successful results are also fun to watch. Everyone reading should know that as of time of writing, I have not finished the campaign yet, as such I am unclear how long this game is. For me 1.5 hours into the campaign and there's still no end in sight. I was blindingly fumbling. But uniqueness in game design, user-friendly nature, plus fun factor are all standing in this game's corner.
Controls
A mouse is all you need.
Graphics and Music
The game has beautiful 2D puzzles with a cardboard/paper cut-out appearance. It really looks very nice and polished. The music is pretty good, there are options to adjust music and sound effects volumes if you wish.
Audience
Anyone who can understand that actions have consequences and who can click a mouse on a screen.
Pricing
It's a unique game, and it's well designed. So I would say it's worth the asking price of $14.99 USD. Though for a new developer who doesn't have a big following, I would imagine a lower price would probably sell better. On the Steam store page, they clearly indicate that the price in Early Access will be the same price at completed v1.0 launch.
Positives
+Beautiful cardboard/paper cut-out appearance +Nice physics simulation (including situational gravity) +Unique game +Challenging puzzles at baseline, with even more challenge coins to collect in each level +Easy to learn with simple controls +User friendly +Even though it's a single-player game, it's great to project to a large screen, sit back on the couch, and huddle as a team with family or friends to come up with the most efficient solution or some cool acrobatic sequences.
Negatives
-Level editor needs some work, currently it's not easy to use (please keep in mind the game is still in Early Access, and this is a point that will be worked on.)
Conclusion
Posable Heroes is a really good action sequence simulator with the use of changes of poses of your characters in order to progress in a puzzle-like fashion. There is a lot of fun factor in this game, and the game design is highly commendable. The game is being released into Early Access because there are still some things that could use improvement, mainly the level editor. Pricing is reasonable, EA price is going to be the same as the full-release price. I would give this game a 8/10 in its current state. The following video shows me fumbling my way through the first 7 levels of this game blind last night before release, hopefully it will give you some ideas about the way the gameplay is structured: https://youtu.be/o1DSkCOYe_k
I received the product for free. Cool and unique puzzle game! There is no "one and only" way to beat the level, every twitch of the character affects the outcome of the scene, making each completion a drastically different experience. Though at first it may be difficult to make the character move as intended, but with practice one could make him the truest ninja of them all.

Toribash, is that you, old friend?
Game, with unique mechanic, cool levels, funny scenes and beautiful soundtrack. One-man creation, Posable heroes. I played a lot in this game and i can say, this is not the end. I hope you, Lint, will have a lot of money from this game and buy will briliant pony :D
Really fun game, quite addictive when you get the hang of it. Things get a little clunky when multiple characters are interacting in one animation, each throwing the other off their sequence of movements, but for the most part this is a really cool unique game I recommend.
Really fun, very polished. This game deserves much more attention!
Very fun game, incredibly satisfying to watch the finished product of your animation. There should be less puzzle-like levels, and more parkour/fighting levels. The way the game is played out, it feels awkward to be solving puzzles, and it's allot less satisfying to watch the final product of a puzzle solving level.
Unusual and funny concept
