First the good. The art is beautiful. Finnish mythology is also a massively underused theme so that's good to see. Now for what I didn't like. Looking at the screenshots, I saw a node map and multiple choice events. That immediately made think of FTL, Renowned Explorers, Shigatari, and the like. The idea of an FTL-like with dice combat sounded like an interesting take on the genre and convinced me to buy it. It doesn't play like those games at all. First, the nodes are fixed. You see the same things every time in the same order. You can sort of choose which things to fight or whether to get a campfire or hunting event, but it's ultimately a bit shallow. The hunting events, which is how you replenish food, are also completely random. You press the button to hunt or fish and either fail or succeed. It doesn't tell you why or what the odds are. I though that taking perks from the hunting tree would give me "blue text" options for hunting, but no. This isn't a game that does resource narrative. This one is a bit petty, but when the game starts the Unity configuration tool launches. This can set up keybinds before the game even starts, which is great! However it offers to set keybinds for "fire 1", "fire 2", and "fire 3" among other things. There is no firing in Please The Gods. You play it by clicking on nodes and cards. This definitely confused me. In the neutral category, I'd cite the dice combat. It is fine. But any dice combat is of course going to be highly random. After completing two chapters, I didn't really feel like I was progressing. Having a few rounds in a row where, despite having a higher bonus and an extra die vs. my opponent, I lost due to rolling 1s and 2s didn't make for compelling gameplay for me. I'm listing this as neutral because this isn't an issue with this game in particular so much as with dice games generally. Some people I'm sure like those systems, so for them it would be a positive. In conclusion, though I hate to leave a negative review, this isn't a game I would suggest that other people buy.
Nice and refreshing title. Pros: Mythology lore - quite nice and I felt like my character really lives here. Music - vary suited to genre and world. Tactical and strategy aspects - resource management, many skills with many options are good. You can choose very different types of fight styles. Graphic - maybe not very corlorful, but as for pixel type it is very good. Cons: Length - too short :( Ovewrall: Nice, short game for a decent price.
Подскажите!!! кто знает НАСТОЛКУ по этой игре??? Или очень схожую??? Игра для тех, кто любит ДнД..
It's a nice setting and idea but execution is just not good enough. Game is too simple with not enough strategy, builds, event variety or story. It's not really much more than a dice rolling simulator tbh. If you like rolling a lot of dice, you could give it a try but if you don't, there isn't a good reason to play this. Overall score: 3/10
It's difficult to downgrade this game because it has many strong points. Excellent combat system, decent backstory, attractive artwork, and a balanced degree of complexity. However, the thumbs down is based on how brief the game is. Without any particular effort or luck in dice rolls, completed the game is less than three hours. Even priced at $10, that makes it far too expensive, and it should not be offered as a completed effort when it is so skimpy.
What really got my interest towards this game was the unique setting and theme: Finnish mythology. It is super rare in video games, and I look forward to see it more in RPGs. But this game is really not a RPG. It is just a rough dice game with okay pixel visuals, dull sound effects and with zero tactics or statistics. There are some sort of skill tree system and attack/defense options in combat, but they really don’t tell me anything what they do or how do they affect the gameplay. In combat everything is based on dice rolls, luck and randomness which easily leads to unfair and tedious situations, like constantly taking damage from enemies and enemies constantly dodge all your attacks. There are no other options in combat, like retreat or escaping or such. Because of this unbalanced randomness I got stuck after the third boss so I could not finish the game at all. If you manage to win combat, you really have no options to restore your health. If there is no campfire in your way, you have no means to heal yourself. You cannot rest anytime, you cannot quaff healing potions or anything. It is very bad thing escpecially when you are forced to face the final boss having lots of health and luck. Besides, there is really nothing to motivate you to keep playing this game. No loot, no character creation, no interesting skills, no open-ended tactics, secrets or anything. It is really a shame. I really wanted to like this game for it’s setting, but can’t be helped. The game has so much wasted potential. Cannot really blame for a small indie team.
Very nice. Pretty artwork, great usage of Finnish mythology, simple turn-based gameplay. Your success in every quest/fight depends on RNG to an extent, but it didn't seem unfair to me or anything. It's kinda simple math, if you fail too many/the wrong random events, run out of food or get debuffs. But you can also get buffs the same way, so it can even out, and you can strategize to an extent by your usage of skills.
A fun short dice-battler with ok but strongly themed Pixelart. While skills are useful and somewhat varied, that variation is strategically easily ascertained and then feels a little limited - especially if you play defensively and have a good amount of patience. Some more variety in effects here and there would have done the game good. The story and theme of the game feel good however, and the simple dice battling around that makes it a worthwhile experience.
