DO YOU HAVE THE HEART OF THE DICE?
Would you rather watch than read? Me too. Check out the highlights of the gameplay here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9V2zAjSbpg Take deep Finnish mythology, mix in dice rolls and RPG elements like a perks / skills tree and give the player free choice on which path they take to get to the bosses / objectives. You'd have yourself a good idea of the kind of game that Please the Gods is. There is certainly quite a bit of work you have to do for the Gods, and it's all based on your dice. Each combat has your attack and defense turns, based on dice rolls. You augment / bolster / offset your good / bad rolls through the use of a few skills that you get to specialize in and you use strategy to beat each monster. It's actually a ton of fun and each turn presents you with new challenges on how to beat your opponents dice. You'll know exactly what they are going to do each turn, so it's up to you to decide: Do you hit him hard now, or do you get more defense dice next turn for less dice this turn? This kind of decision is EVERY TURN. It doesn't get the least bit stale, it keeps it super fresh! Highly recommend you check this game out. It's a ton of fun (as long as you get good rolls). Really fun and strategic dice/card game mix. Really pushes your mathematical decision making skills, totally recommend!
This game has peaceful, almost enchanted atmosphere which is created by the tranquil music and beautiful graphics. I like the themes, Finnish mythology and nature. It's so nice to gather berries and go fishing in between the fights. I enjoy this game.
Nice game. I like this kind of old school dice rolling games. The game was a bit short (or I was too good ;). BTW: why is it possible to get bleed debuff when you dodge?
Game is really nice but campaign is really short. It took me four hours to finish the whole campaign on normal difficulty and I was not even rushing. Waste of money, don't buy this game until the devs add a longer campaign or add something else to the game beside the main campaign because currently it is the only thing you can play. Multiplayer maybe? Mods? Something!
Kalevala inspired. You know, the finnish epoch that inspired even Lord of the rings writer. Finally some Nordic history/mythology in Steam. Need moar! Happy independence!
When I played it was very unforgiving, Good game for some, not for everyone though.
Great overall atmosphere with a mix of serene story and exciting battles! Graphics are very well made and anyone interested in pixel art should check this game out. Theme is something rarely seen within video games which is great. Even though the game is on the shorter side, each individual chapter length was well designed and had suitable length.
Don't get me wrong - the game does have huge potential to become a niche indie hit. I do believe that Please the Gods can be a really amazing, Nordic mythology-themed, turn-based RPG with a pretty cool storyline and fantastic art... if and only if it fixes its luck/RNG-based combat/events. Strategizing in this game can only get you so far, especially when your opponent kept rolling double sixes while you kept getting ones to threes.
Watch me play!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jYzg7F082Uo Plus, the second boss is wayyyy too OP. Bleed plus a heal ability for every successful defense, which it gets a lot of because of my crappy dice rolls? That's just too much. I've given the boss fight 3 solid tries and I can honestly say that there is simply no way I could have defeated the boss unless I get super lucky in my dice rolls, which I didn't. To put it simply, it's just not fun playing through an entire run up to the final boss fight only to get your face slammed into the dirt over and over. Not to mention, once you're stuck and unable to progress because of poor dice rolls, there is basically no way you can improve your current predicament besides just brute forcing the same quest until hopefully you'll get series of great dice rolls (less than a 1% chance I'd say) one day. Of course, like another reviewer said as well, this luck-based system is pervasive even among hunting or mushroom-picking events. In my last run, I had zero luck gathering extra food on my journey to the final boss and I end up getting the "starving" debuff. I've also noticed that my companion isn't really doing anything during combat. Maybe that's why combat is unbalanced in this game? Is my pet dog supposed to contribute some damage to the fight?
Overall
I've noticed that balancing has always been a huge issue among most indie games, and unfortunately, Please the Gods is no exception. It does have the package of a great game in the making but it sorely needs to fix its unfair combat/event system that's too reliant on the RNG. Adding a little luck works wonders to keep combat unpredictable and exciting, but if it's too much, like in this current version of the game, you'll just end up feeling like the AI is conspiring against you and there is no way you could win... like what I felt by the end of my livestream. Due to this, I cannot recommend buying this game at its current state. However, if the developers do manage to correct this major issue, I'd be more than happy to check out the game again and update my review. Please The Gods is a very chill game. It has great push your luck aspects and strategy with it's combat. You're a hunter who sets forth to find better resources for your family. You end up taking on quests from deities and from there on you travel to different nodes fighting enemies, choosing paths on encounters, and hunting. It's a fun little turn-based game that is definitely worth the price if it at all catches your interest.
