I'm old enough to remember BASIC games which produce random 'slaloms' that you move down using ASCII characters. This game is not enough of an evolution of that basic concept for me.
Bought this with what little money I have left in my Steam Wallet, and to be honest it was a very good purchase! Getting used to the controls and game mechanics took a while at first, but once I got the hang of it, I was hooked! The pixel graphics and in-game humor are few of the charming things of the game, but one of the biggest selling point for me is the soundtrack (to all the music composers, hats off to you guys) which made the whole gaming experience very fun and at times, exciting and challenging. While the sales are still up, if you have some cash to spare I'd definitely reccommend getting this game!

You gotta mash the buttons to get anywhere and the controls on my xbox controller are messed up. Upgrades are mostly meaningless beside the speed one and the movement is super jittery and makes me nauseous. Heck the frame rate is all over the place which is fascinating. The arcade mode is better but just because you're not restricted to crappy missions. I got this game for free from a random cardboard card. I honestly wish I never redeemed it.
Tags: Casual - Runner Additional Tags: Delete Local Content & Remove from Library TLDR: Controls stick especially the left to right movement. The constant scrolling gets nauseating. Little asset diversity. Menus feel slow. This game is about free falling but movement is handled in a strict lane-based manner, so moving several lanes to the left involve smashing your controller dpad repeatedly. Lacks fluidilty. While the game has unlockables, a few interesting twists like accelerating and decelerating to kill or dodge obstacles it also locks you into a boring succession of corridor levels in which you have to accomplish silly in-game achievements to progress. The music was okay but clearly royalty free melodies, the CRT filter was on the grating side of thing and the general tone and setting of the game universe felt a bit contrived. Altogether I would just say to go play the original bit trip runner which has all the retro appeal this might have but with much better implemented level design. https://store.steampowered.com/app/63710/BITTRIP_RUNNER/
This is a weird one for me. Personally, I wouldn't recommend it, but that's mostly because I didn't find it all that fun. I love the presentation, it plays just fine and everything. I'd definitely give it a passing score, but it's just not for me...
https://youtu.be/B1U2LUDC22A The vertical runner formula is in fine form in this shaft based gravity driven extreme sport. The numerous levels have a lot to offer, but the gameplay mutators add even more variety to the play. The controls in game are tight and responsive while the menu controls are a bit of a mess.
If you do get this game, I recommend turning off visual effects to get rid of the ugly CRT effect lines all over the screen. I'm unsure why they were included, since the art wasn't designed like old street fighter games or anything that'd benefit from the sub-pixel effect, it just makes everything a little browner and uglier. Gripes: The art on the store page / trailer is very good, but the actual story frames in the levels are comparatively ugly. That was disappointing. The screen is only 5 'tiles' wide, and yet it just feels sluggish to get from one side of the screen to the other... Or at least, like it's a lot of 'work' Whereas Downwell uses continuous movement that would surely be wider than 5 tiles, but it feels so snappy and responsive... Hmm, I'm really unsure why Downwell feels so much better to just play and move around in... So, I recommend this game just to contrast to Downwell as a game design study, but not really otherwise.
