A really nice puzzle game. I was afraid it would get repetitive but the puzzles are varied and interesting. The difficulty is on point. The solution is never too obvious (even when you think it is), yet I never got stuck for too long. Plenty of content, and for those who want an extra challenge, the bonus levels and achievements will keep your brain busy.
Le but ? Alors.
This is a great puzzle game. DO NOT JUDGE THE GAME BASED ON LOOKS. The puzzles are fun. They begin easy and get a lot more complex. There are two types of puzzles the main 3D puzzles, where you use cubes to control lasers to open doors and 2D puzzles that unlock the next platform. Like every puzzle game, the puzzles can take however long it takes you to figure out the puzzle. Some I got stuck on and was not seeing the solution, then I looked at it another way, and it just solved. The dev did give me some hints, but it still took me seeing the solution to figure it out. The next update will be adding hints for people who want them. Well, I wanted to wait to write after I beat it. I wanted to get a review out asap because this is a great game. Really well done puzzles. Lots of variety without overusing concepts. I'd definitely recommend this to most puzzle fans. Story was a very small part of the game but it works well. Reminded me a bit of Infinifactory. The hint system is incredible. I only used it a couple times on 2D puzzles, but I love how its handled. Feels like such a natural part of the game. The progression on the main platform was also really rewarding. I was always happy when I got to backtrack to it.
I am only about 3/4 in at the time of writing this but I feel I can post my recommendation anyway. Photon Engineer checks all the boxes regarding stuff I am looking for in a puzzle game: First person perspective, evolving yet consistent mechanics, logic puzzles that (occationally) require you to make use of the environment without having to break said mechanics and the reward of additional puzzles to solve for solving the main puzzles. Some of the puzzles are quite brutal for my moderate intellect. -But some of them only seem to be, as the solution sometimes turns out to be so simple, I am both surprised and ashamed I didn't think of it right away. In those few cases I say "well played" to Grégory Petit (dev) for somehow leading my mind astray so nonchalantly. The aesthetics are pretty basic but to a true lover of puzzle games, that should not be of any importance as long as the gameplay holds up, which it does. The load times are miniscule for the same reason and I reckon the game would run smoothly on any PC younger than 15 years or so. The obligatory mystery aspect is present as well but untill I finish the game I can't say how well that plays out. In conclusion I highly recommend Photon Engineer to all who like the classics of the genre and I will be keeping an eye out for any future projects by the dev, Grégory Petit. Good job.
Nice portal-esque game, with inspirations from logic circuits. Challenging at times! The engine is open source, and very well written (it deserves a buy just for that!). Solid Linux build, thank you!
Recommend for puzzle game lovers
Bought it during the "INTRODUCTORY OFFER". Good indie puzzle game (3D & first person view). Difficulty increase over the levels and will satisfy a lot of puzzle solver experts ! First levels are easy and let you understand the game mechanics. In later levels, you will sometimes have to think twice (or a lot more...) to find the good path and pass the level. The game easily run on my computer and seems well optimized. It should easily run on any modest laptop.
OK...I just reached level 28 so I don't know anything past this, but: >Just based on what I've seen so far---BUY this puzzle game. At first, learning how to manipulate the boxes etc., can be a bit confusing (because it is Different from other games). The graphics are simple, and the game Runs smooth and without a hitch. Here's the only thing that I didn't care for: For the most part, you solve a level and move to the next level (rinse and repeat). However, on occasion, you may need to go back to 'some' level in order to proceed to the next level. I didn't care for this at all, but some people seem to have liked the added complexity. IF you are a puzzle junkie<<<Download this immediately as it will give your synapses a light show! Keep in mind, this isn't a 'simple' puzzle game. You will REALLY have to put your thinking caps on for this one. For me, it was even more complicated than "Infinifactory"! It was 10 bucks for my purchase, but if you are on the fence, put it on your wish list and wait for a good SALE. ---The only major negative that I can think of is that: The complexity of this puzzle game will 'turn away' a LOT of people. It's always hard to try and balance a puzzle game that will appeal to the most people. This game, unlike Portal or The Room, doesn't understand that "balance". -UPDATE- Ok, I hit level 35 and have just completely 'quit'. The puzzle has just become so 'unattached', or off the wall...The kinds of things that "you are just 'supposed' to know" have finally just sucked any enjoyment left out of the game for me. However: For you more detailed 'die-hards', I'd definitely give this game a run as long as you realize that it is going to be HARD and even HARDER once you reach level 34 or 35<<<Good Luck!
