Playtime:
51 Minutes
Completion Status:
Finished
Important Bits:
I feel that this has the roots of a great game, but the lag, useless powers, and reduced plot hold it back. The base plot is interesting enough and the power ideas good however I feel the story isn't as fleshed out as it should have been, and I didn't once have to use any other power other that the pulse and that is just because I'm paranoid and like to know where everyone is. The lag wasn't horrible, just enough to be obnoxious but not enough to hinder gameplay. However, I have a decently beefy PC that can play Red Dead 2 on max graphics with no problem so people with computers that don't have as good processing may have issues. Overall, I think if the creator expanded the lore, made the powers more important, and fixed the lag issues this would have been a much better game.
Personal Gripes:
I personally think the Text to Speech wasn’t horrible, but it did detract from the overall feel of the game and the ending felt a bit shoehorned, like it just wanted for the game to be done and leave off for a sequel.
Positives:
Though Short, the stealth elements were interesting, the base plot intriguing, and the art style fun. I was happy to have played this game as a short, interesting distraction.
Final Thoughts:
Overall, not a horrible game, ESPECIALLY for a free one. I personally would spend a few dollars for a revamped version with the fixes and improvements I discussed earlier. It has a similar vibe to Dishonored with its mechanics with the interesting beginnings of a story.

Muy muy divertido y con un arte precioso. Me he quedado con muchas ganas de más
Pestilence is a take on Dishonored if it focused purely on stealth and set in Medieval times with an artstyle similar to Darkest Dungeons. For the gameplay, you are granted four powers to aid you in your quest for revenge against your brethren who imprisoned you. The first one is possession which allows you to possess a new living host. The second one causes you to infect a NPC to cause a distraction. The third one is a teleport orb that you can throw and teleport to on command. The fourth power is a pulse orb which allows you to temporarily see enemies and hosts through walls within its radius. The host you possess is important as it dictates what level of access you have to areas in the game. For example, only a worker host can enter construction areas while noble NPCs can enter the theatre. However, your possessed host will slowly decay as time and usage of your powers continue. When your body is at a quarter of it integrity, your disguise will fail. It's not a bad game but there are some annoying things I noticed. You are powerless against guards unless you sneak up to them from behind which sounds like a no brainer but not when multiple guards cover flanks near the end. Your power usage is tied directly to your body's integrity which means that you need to be frugal with it as less and less hosts can be safely possessed later in the game. It got real frustrating when I had to YOLO to kill the last guy because I ran out of body integrity to use my powers.
An interesting twist on the stealth genre. Very pretty and the mechanics are well considered. I've not explored the game properly yet but it's clear to me that the developers have really thought through their game mechanics which is certainly more than I can see for a whole host of other games.

Fun concept, would be great to expand the universe
"Pestilence" is one of literally thousands of student projects infesting Steam. It's from U-tad. While student projects tend to be better quality than most "amateur" made games, we must still question what value such projects have for gamers. As with all student projects, this isn't really a fully fleshed out game, it's just the result of an academic exercise, and as such it has much more limited value as a game than a professionally developed game would have. Educational institutions should not be using Steam as a dumping ground for homework assignments (especially if the students didn't even pass the course). Sure, it helps their marketing and helps the students feel good about themselves, but this is another case of a business putting themselves before the needs of gamers. The students made a short 3D first person stealth action tech demo. The idea follows the Lord of the Pestilence, a betrayed god seeking revenge by infiltrating a city and infecting its leaders, who are the Judges of the ruling caste, and you get your revenge through some okay-ish stealth mechanics. Of course, being a student project, this is somewhat incomplete, short, and lacks crucial polish... this is a concept for a game that might have worked if properly developed, but this is just someone's homework assignment. On the important subject of visuals, this features fairly low quality stylised/cartoony low poly 3D graphics. It comes across as the kind of thing you see on mobile phones and Nintendo games, which will deter a lot of PC gamers, understandably. Gaming is a visual medium, and to be considered one of the best games on Steam, the graphics have to be some of the best on Steam. That's not happening here. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. It would be unethical for students to try charge money for their homework assignments, so you don't have to pay any money for this. But you'd still have to spend your time downloading this, and "time is money", as they say. There's the other problem, too... as a student project, this wasn't made for gamers. There's no requirement for them to polish and balance the game properly, all they need is something to show the faculty so they can get their grade and move on. Let's once more ask... why is that good for gamers? It's obviously not delivering a solid product. Yet here it is, on the store page, and here you are, reading my review for a student demo that's going to waste your time. While genuine amateur developers who made real products get ignored because they have to compete with this stuff. In some ways, this deluge of student projects on Steam is harmful to everyone. In terms of public reception, this failed. There's over 130 million unique gamers visiting Steam every month. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 8 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. This student project/tech demo/glorified homework assignment provides no Steam profile benefits, no +1 to your game count, and little value to gamers (because it's just a small, unpolished student project), so I can't recommend this over the thousands of full, professionally made games on Steam.
Some genuinely neat art direction and potentially interesting world-building unfortunately does not make up for the poor optimization and janky game mechanics in my opinion. One of the few abilities the game gives you doesn't even serve a purpose as far as I could tell.
