A strategic match 3 game which is very addictive but lacks some QoL features.
Pepper Blast pleasantly surprised me, needing some deep tactical thinking to succeed. I was expecting the usual casual endless match 3 game play but with this one you need to stop and think about every move. Your moves are limited and in each level you will have an objective to meet which you must complete to move on to the next stage. This might be matching patterns, like four yellow peppers followed by three red ones, or destroying so many coloured peppers, or getting pepper blasts etc. I've managed to complete three stages so far, but it is very challenging and I have had to repeat the same levels over and over again before winning, trying different tactics and approaches. The game is very addictive and some levels seemed impossibly difficult but they are very satisfying to complete once you try something and it pays off. I think I have got to the point now where it is too difficult though and it's stopped feeling fun and it's all down to that stupid cat! As you make matches of the same coloured pepper, they get bigger and bigger until they eventually explode which instantly makes all of that coloured pepper one size bigger in the process. If another one bursts, making the others one size bigger again, and another one bursts, then you start getting a chain, and if nine of the same coloured pepper bursts in a row you get a pepper blast. Sometimes, a pepper blast is part of an objective. The stage I am on at the moment is ice block which means some of the peppers are encased in ice and they need peppers to explode to destroy the ice. Enter the cat, whose job it is to pop up and steal your peppers, yet he doesn't just steal any old pepper, he steals inflated peppers, and not just one but all of them in a whole row. So, all your hard work is taken away in one fowl swoop and it feels very disheartening because there's very little you can do about it. On all of the other stages I have found ways around difficulties, including the cat, but this seems ridiculously difficult and I have been stopped in my tracks. I really enjoyed my time up to that point though, but beware the game is quite challenging. It is a bit misleading to say there are five different modes because you cannot just pick a mode and play it, these modes are unlocked as you play through the game, and basically new mechanics are introduced as you complete each stage, so stage one is classic, stage two is rock, stage three is ice block, stage four is thief and the last stage is fusion, so you will only experience all the modes by completing the game. As a match three game it has some satisfying bells and whistles with great sound effects in all the right places like explosions, fireworks, and lots of fanfare moments. The sound is great. Unfortunately, there are no options for screen size or resolution. When you start the game, a small window opens which is about an eighth the size of my monitor screen. The window can be enlarged but the quality of graphics suffers the more you stretch it, and in the end I just played it in its original small window. I think this might be a non starter for some people and it is unacceptable. I hope they fix this issue.
🍳Conclusion🍳

Pepper Blast is an addictive and challenging match three game with a lot of tactical thinking needed and a bit of luck to succeed. I loved the presentation of the game but beware that the game play window is very small on loading and there are no options to resize apart from stretching the window. If you can look past this, then you'll find a clever and well designed puzzle game.

Curator Info:
Thank you for reading my review.
Da muss man schon irgendwie auffallen.

Warning: In-Game Cash Shop This game is infested with a toxic mobile app style cash shop. You will be prompted to and expected to give money/credit card details to the developers through this cash shop to buy in-game goods so you can play the game.
"Pepper Blast" is a laughably bad mobile app type Match-3/Bejewelled ripoff with some (possibly asset flipped) pictures of chilis instead of gems. That's it, that's all there is to this. What do you do in the game? Pretend you're playing an iPhone game. While I couldn't find this on the mobile app stores, everything about it looks and feels like it's a mobile app designed for mobile phones... for PC gaming enthusiasts, it's not going to give you a cutting edge PC gaming experience. That alone is enough to disqualify this from any recommendation. We don't spend thousands building gaming rigs so that we can pretend they're iPhones and play iPhone games and mobile apps. The graphics are lacklustre because this was designed for mobile phones, not gaming PCs. Whenever a product is designed to run tolerably on 5 year old iPhones, it's obviously not going to come close to the minimum quality standards that PC gaming enthusiasts except on their cutting edge gaming rigs. One more, mobile devs have made gaming worse for everyone. PC gamers don't spend thousands on their gaming rigs so they can pretend they're iPhones. That alone is enough to disqualify this for recommendation. This is the part of the review where we need to ask gamers to keep a straight face. This garbage was made with Adobe AIR/Flash, it's basically a 1990's browser/Flash game that's been dumped here on Steam Direct, it's polluting the place with Flash garbage, and that's a real problem. Don't laugh, they seriously published a Flash game on Steam! That's right, this developer was trying to profit, they wanted your money for a glorified Flash game. It's appalling, isn't it? On the important matter of pricing and value for gamers, there's a lot going on here with monetisation, so this really shouldn't be considered a truly free product because of that. There's no initial download price, but the developer was charging $5 USD for this. Price barriers, especially on low quality products, can be a direct cause of failure. It seems like a nice gesture for the game to have no up-front cost anymore, but it also tells us that the game wasn't good enough to succeed as a paid product. This is also a bit of a slap in the face to anyone who showed enough questionable judgement to pay money for this... nobody got refunded. It doesn't stop there, this game is also infested with disgusting mobile app store like microtransactions. This is a consumer hostile model that we don't need to see on PC. It's deceptively priced to gouge gamers, and that's a reason in itself to avoid this. In terms of public reception, this failed. There's over 130 million unique gamers visiting Steam every month. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 10 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Given that this free title won't increase your game collector count, is it worth your time to add it to your library? Not on a bet. I didn't have to pay for this, but I still feel ripped off.
