I really wanted to like this game because it has everything that I could ever want from a game like this, but I can't help but suffer through how clunky the controls and movement are. For a game that is all about movement (and that's like, the entire game), it has to be tight and responsive, which this is not. Otherwise, I think the characters and world are great, but I can't recommend this due to the gameplay and movement.
The game is sugar-coated platforming wonkiness on a carefree Saturday morning. Unfortunately, the vibes do not always match the janky, unrefined controls. The demo pretty much shows all the game has to offer, so go by that experience for your purchasing decision. A mediocre Sideways Thumb at best.
Penny's Big Breakaway ended up being more enjoyable than I expected. I played the demo and thought it was decent, and then it eventually went on sale for $11.99 and I decided to grab it at that price. Fast forward to two weeks ago, and I finally fired it up and gave it a shot. One of my main concerns from the demo was that I wanted to be able to explore and not be chased by penguins constantly. And thankfully, I felt that the penguins were much less annoying throughout the experience than I feared they would be. Yes, they were annoying to deal with, but dealing with them was relatively simple and the game generally didn't dump a pile of penguins on you in spots where exploration for secrets was needed. I started out being very bad at the game, but by the end, I felt pretty comfortable in my movement. I'm far from a polished speedrunner, but I at least could be relatively fast when I wanted to be as well as reasonably agile and nimble with platforming. Penny is definitely a game that is much more enjoyable once you get a hang of the mechanics and movement options. If you never reach that level of comfort and familiarity, I don't think you've given the game a fair shake. I know my Steam time says 16.5 hours, but I actually completed everything in just under 12.5 hours. And by "everything" I mean I collected all 6 collectibles in every stage, finished the campaign, cleared the bonus stages, and achieved all of the achievements. I did not unlock all of the art pieces because they didn't count towards 100% file completion and getting all of them wasn't an achievement. Overall, if you like 3D platformers, this is a good one, but again, you have to get comfortable with the movement mechanics to really get the full experience. This game also seems like it would be a speedrunner's dream (I am not one so I can't say for sure). Don't judge the game based on the demo; I liked the full game significantly more than I liked the demo.
my whole life the blue blur has had a death grip on my extreme autisim, but for a brief moment I felt free. thank you penny.
кто придумал это управление - тому йойо в жопу засунуть бы
Really saddened to have this game be the first ever game I need to leave a negative review on but sadly the amount of jank and bugs this game has is just too much for me not to warn anyone. majority of the game has been amazing and I love the art and designs a lot. but sadly the dev team haven't put as much passion into their collisions and mechanics. I managed to get all the way to level 6-3 before the bugs made it impossible for me to finish the level and therefore finish the game at all. Hope that someday this will be resolved but all that stands now is I have wasted my money and cannot get it back. I love the devs and know this is definitely not their intention but please do not buy this game until the game is actually beatable again
This is a great game, the movement is perfect, it is a little too easy but that's okay, the artstyle and sountrack are great too, I liked this game more than any sonic game and the last 6 mainline mario games (2D and 3D, so any after galaxy 2), I have no idea why this is only mostly positive on steam.
after finishing it a second time it's still one of my favorite platformers ever put out. this game's swag is unmatched and doesn't fall into what i've heard others refer to as "movement slop" thanks to the genuine skill it takes to master. the biggest complaint i can give is that it is a little janky at times, you'll no doubt run into something worthy of a head scratch during your playthrough. but all in all, it's one of the finest modern platformers we've seen yet, and i highly recommend it.
boss fights are the weakest part. otherwise it is a short and sweet platformer with a nice gimmick
