You are not a hero. You are just an everyday average mechanic. You can fight, but without having the resources to repair damaged systems blocking your way, you will die before you escape...

This is a really great game. I enjoyed this a lot. A few things that stood out to me: -The horror was well done. Don't be hesitant if you're easily scared though, it's a very manageable level of scares. It builds the suspense more with sound and atmosphere and survival. If you want a genuine scare though, try "brave mode" aka ghost mode, very creepy and fun. -You may be a bit confused at first. Much like the game Control, Penelope Syndrome drops you in with almost no info and unveils the story as it goes. Stick with it and you'll be rewarded with unique spin on storytelling and an emotional journey. Trust me, its worth it. -If you've played this developers previous games, just know that Penelope here is a very different character then Cherry, Trix, and Alicia Crash. You have to give Penelope some time to get to know her, but when you do, you'll be all in on her journey. -If you get to the end you'll be rewarded with a really great ending credit song. A+ one other thing to note: -There is a "hoard mode" that can possibly trigger rarely and randomly. If this happens try to get out of the level as quick as you can because things get intense and the difficulty heightens. The enemy balance during this initially caused some frustration for me, but upon replaying this as of 2/10/26, it appears the devs have noticed and patched it, so it is a much smoother experience. There are so many games on steam, it can be hard to find quality in the sea of games sometimes. I'm happy I gave Critoniuum and Dd games a shot because they turned out to be really enjoyable experiences. I'd definitely recommend giving Penelope Syndrome a try. And to check out the previous games from the developer too.
Excuse me while I cry... AGAIN As usual, I wanna start the review with a disclaimer: I'm friends with the dev, but I bought this game on my own and played it and these are my honest thoughts. Dd Games strikes again with yet another good game! This game took me around 6 hours to beat and I really did enjoy it so much. I won't spoil anything, but if you've played the other games from the dev, just be aware that this one is different from the other two. The genre, style and tone are different. We've entered the realm of survival horror. The premise of the game is unique and I really enjoyed this take on survival horror. Our main character is also unique, but I'll let you figure out why when you play it :) Just to start things off, I think it's important to say this: This is a good survival horror game, in my opinion. Things aren't janky and the puzzles are not just ridiculously obtuse just for the sake of it. I really enjoyed the puzzles in this game and the game overall. This is not one of those frustrating survival horror games. Anyway, on to the rest of the review... I say it in every review, but I always love the characters in the games from the dev. They're fleshed out and they feel like they could be real people. I'm always, always, emotionally attached to them by the end of the game. Speaking of being emotional, this game really tugged on my heart ughhhh... I wanted to cry at the end! It's just so good and gosh. I love this universe that the dev has made and all of the characters in it. The finale always hits. Every. Single. Time. I liked all the different environments and locations. Being able to go back and forth from area to area to find things is very nice and also, it's neat that things load back in differently every time. So if you get a game over, the items you need aren't going to be in the same spot they were last time. You've got to find them all over again. Resources are also limited so you have to kind of strategize about when to use some of your items. You do have to think to play this game. There's just so much variety with the game. Like I said, the items move around, there's different dialogue for the cutscenes when you find save points, there are even things that re unique to certain difficulties. It's just really neat. Replayability is good and there's a lot going on with hidden things to find, so there's plenty to do. I also enjoyed the enemy types. (I definitely have a favorite, even if it did kill me so many times.) There are several different ones that are unique to certain areas and I was genuinely afraid to face some of them lol. I played on normal mode (If I remember correctly?) and it was certainly a challenge but not so much to make me frustrated. I can't speak for hard mode, but this game is, fortunately, not going to make you rage quit or anything. There are so many good things about this game and honestly, I don't have anything particularly negative to say about the game. There are a few things to note, but I personally don't really consider them as being bad. Just something to keep in mind for personal preference. -Like, This is just a personal preference, but I do miss the mechanic of actually being able to press buttons to fight rather than just running into the enemy. -The difficulty selection isn't your standard menu selection. Rather than just a "easy/normal/hard" selection, it's a couple of questions and I do think that's a neat way to do it. If you don't pay enough attention to text though, you might load in on something harder than you want. There are definitely context clues though, so it should be fine. -Last thing is that, yes, this is a standalone game, but you might not understand all the references if you haven't played the other games from the dev. They're all set in the same universe, so I feel like that's a normal thing though and just means that you need to play the other games too :P Overall this is a great game and I certainly enjoyed it. Like all the other games from the dev, it's very obvious that there was a lot of love and care put into this game and it shows. You can tell that the dev always had the player in mind when everything was being made. I'll absolutely be playing it again.
This is really good, gameplay feels like Resident Evil 2 if it was an RPG maker game, and the story is really solid, found out later some of the side characters have their own games, so if you get into it you have other games to try as well. Story is good and the game is 5$, like 3$ on sale, If you cant even swing that at least look up a let's play or something and then buy it later because the story is actually great.
Overgrown: Genesis has 20% better combat, but Penelope Syndrome has 100% less zombie sex.
