Pelagos: A Marine Adventure

I cannot legitimately find any redeeming qualities in this game. It's buggy, it's extremely short, there is almost no content, the gallery doesn't work, taking pictures serves no purpose as you can't collect anything or even as much as save them, the graphics are... well they are what they are... and there is very little variety in terms of fish. It's also pretty much entirely silent during the game, there's very little audio, and no music or anything to try and spice up the dull gameplay.

Lets get kraken: One thing's for shore, I otter-ly love this game. This is absolutely sandsational and the gameplay is shrimply amazing. If anyone says they don't like this game, they can't be searious or they're just being crabby. I just wish we could take a sealfie with all these crabsolutely amazing sea creatures. The dev's love for marine animals shines through in the variety of sea creatures too! There's no-fin better than some vitamin sea.

The gallery doesn't work, rendering the game useless.

"Pelagos: A Marine Adventure" is edutainment.. It's is an underwater exploration simulation. Players navigate a marine environment, taking photographs of wildlife to learn about them and documenting pollution. The main activity is swimming around and capturing images for an in-game gallery. Frankly you're better off spending a few bucks to pick up Beyond Blue if you want a bit of underwater eduction, or Abzu if you want more of an artistic narrative game. In terms of visuals, this features fairly low quality low poly 3D visuals which will deter a lot of gamers, understandably. Gaming is a visual medium, and while some developers struggle with creating high quality visuals, failing to do so is a disservice to gamers. It's very difficult to recommend bad looking games. On the matter of pricing and value for gamers, most "free" games on Steam aren't really free. There's often nasty mobile app cash shops, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, or any other number of shady pricing schemes that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game. Nothing demonstrates a developers belief in themselves and their work than giving it away without any remuneration. This is a service to themselves, and the gaming industry, and should be applauded. Of course, just because something is free, doesn't necessarily mean it's valuable, or something you might want to spend your time on. Despite having no up-front cost, this failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 2 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? This is a "maybe" experience... if you have a lot of free time on your hands and nothing else to do, why not? But for the purposes of a review, this isn't something I can say everyone must try. It's not quite there. Valve doesn't give us a "maybe" option in reviews, but if they did, that's what I'd choose for this.

A simple, yet entertaining game with a ton of cool ideas, marine species to learn about, and trash (literally)
