So this is a bit of a mixed bag, I follow this game on Itch.io and have been for a while. Noticed some things. However I'll get to all of that. I'll knock the good out real quick: - Conceptually this game has some really strong points. I'm a sucker for point-n-click adventure style dating sim/visual novel games. So I do have a bias here, but it is pretty consistent. - The art style is custom and has heart. I'm also a sucker for stylized art and the fact that it's entirely 3D with handmade assets gives it a huge boost in my eyes. - The story on paper sounds neat; yeah the whole magic/military academy schtick has been played out to death but this one is taking a pretty neat approach, it doesn't mirror real life so much that it's jarring, but at the same time the magic isn't nearly as in your face as this game's contemporaries. - The characters are enjoyable if a little flat personality wise at the moment (though I'm sure that's gonna get ironed out eventually) - The music goes WAY too hard for a gooner game, but I'm not gonna complain about that. I love the atmosphere this game sells with it's music alone. The Meh: - Game's a bit laggy for a game that doesn't have more than 3 performance settings, usually when a game has minimal settings it's because it's been stress tested and works really well. This one however has more than its fair share of bugs. - The objectives are simple but obtuse in that some quests have specific locations and time of day while others don't. I've been stuck on "Old Friends" for the better half of 3 hours because I can't find Ellie and I've searched everywhere at all times of the day and all weather conditions on all 7 days of the week. The only time I have seen her is to get instructions for "The Almanac". So some quest markers would be nice or at least all quest objective descriptions be given the same time/day/location treatment. The Bad: - A complete lack of transparency from the developers. As I said before I follow this game on Itch.io and paid for it there ($15) thinking it would get me the full thing as it's being developed (at the time it wasn't out on Steam so I didn't know what the asking price was gonna be), only for a couple of months later the devs addressed why newer updates weren't coming to Itch. It's because they were only ever planning on releasing the game on Itch up to a certain point and anyone who paid for it, essentially paid for a not great quality demo. This lack of transparency from the outset, I feel is disgusting behavior on the dev's part. I essentially paid $35 USD for this game. - Lack of support from the developers. I went into the guides section of the community page for this game because I was stuck and found nothing, went to the discussions tab and saw a whole host of people who were just as lost even if they were a bit farther along than me, the bug reports thread is filled with a lot of bug reports but very few posts from devs even if it was just assurances. The last time any dev posted was last September, and for a game that we paid for (for the asking price mind you), that sort of negligence is unacceptable. - Patreon potentially getting preferential treatment. I don't support this team on Patreon and seeing how they did the people on Itch.io (not the leeches who complain about not getting a game for free, or the ones thinking $5 is worth a game like this, but the people who paid anywhere between $15-20 or more), and how they're doing people who purchased this game on here, I won't be supporting them on Patreon ever, not for this game and not for any future games. Not until they clean up their act. I only say potentially because I know how some devs are, they're more willing to communicate with the community they fostered on a platform where said community is to pay for it monthly and given 753 paying members up to $100 per month, yeah I kind of get that, but the people here paid for it too, we deserve equal treatment considering we paid the price for it. All in all, I want to recommend this game, it's charming, it's got amazing potential, it's freakin gorgeous, and again that soundtrack is nothing but bangers. However I can't bring myself to do it, simply because Gatolobo are not being transparent with the community they're fostering, they've effectively abandoned the Steam community for 4 months with no communications outside of their update notifications, leaving the bug reports thread largely unanswered, the guides section empty, and absolutely no responses in other community threads. And if someone from Gatolobo or TinyHat reads this review, please don't take this as me saying you're all a bunch of greedy schmucks who stole money from your communities, or that I hate either of you, or that this is a bad game. I'm saying what you've got here can be something special if communications were better, updates didn't tank the performance, and some things were made clearer in-game.
This game looked soooo promising that I went to their patreon to support them and found out that patreon is soooo far ahead of the steam version. Unfortunately the game is RIDDLED with bugs (and from what I've played on the patreon version, it ONLY gets worse). For starters, the quests can EASILY bug out. They'll give you 'hints' on how to progress, but they're either incredibly vague that you have no clue where to begin, or they'll tell you when, but then when it comes time to it, what you need to progress said quest decided not to spawn and you'll literally progress time by like 3 weeks just for what you need to FINALLY be there! Then there's the fact quests you've ALREADY completed will sometimes just repeat their events, sometimes soft locking you out of whatever quest you're CURRENTLY on. Then we have crashes. This happens. A LOT. Basically, ANYTIME you trigger a loading screen, your game is likely to crash. You use the map to fast travel (you will eventually HAVE to do this) then your game might crash. You transition to a different area that triggers a loading screen? Your game might crash. A certain interaction (like with learning NSFW stuff with lily) triggers a loading screen? You guessed it! Your game might crash! Save OFTEN! This game looks pretty, but with how buggy and frequently it crashes, it is an absolute NIGHTMARE to deal with that I honestly wouldn't recommend this game to ANYONE until it gets fixed. Oh! I almost forgot! Sometimes the game will simply crash from you trying to load a save! Or decide to just not launch at all! Update: Recently re-downloaded to see if any of the mentioned issues were fixed. The answer is a resounding NO. In fact, the crashing is more frequent now and even worse. The crashing is now causing an issue with the game even launching. The game will simply crash, and when I try launching it, it will launch, but nothing pops up, so when I try to launch it again, I will get an error saying the game is already running despite nothing for the game being on my screen. Closing the game and relaunching it does not seem to do anything either. Noticed the patreon version received substantial bug fixes, so maybe this is all fixed in that version, but until the steam version gets caught up, I still HIGHLY recommend avoiding this game.
Game finally got updated, but im holding my *I recommend This Game* speech, until after I have had a chance to see if all the game breaking issues are still present, will update this review later after I have had a chance to start from a fresh save. -------------------------------------Original Review!------------------------------------------- So, I have held off long enough.... I have had this game for a while now, and I have finally hit the "report" button, and filed a complaint under "broken" This game has been given several updates, but only for patreon users, those who pay a monthly subscription... For those who are not familiar with the Developers agreement on steam, it has a claus in it which states specifically when dealing with patreon/star/itch that the developers are to release updates in a timely manner, no later then 2 weeks after the game has been updated on the mentioned websites, sadly most of the developers who release a game on here into early access, don't bother with updating their game, until steam contacts them in regards to the complaints... I advise anyone who is reading this response to NOT buy this game until this issue is addressed, to those who have already bought the game on steam, I advise you report the game as broken and request that steam reminds the developers to update the game.
Don't buy this. Not even close to being a game. Proof of concept at best. Hardly has any content. No functioning "quest"-guidance and lots of bugs, that locks the progress. Unfortunately i've spend too long clicking around for quests that must be bugged or just isn't there yet, to ask for a refund. This half-baked alpha version does not belong on Steam.
We're not as special as Patrons
Don't waste your money on this game unless you like to save and reload for quest items to appear. These devs suck ass. Just pirate this ♥♥♥♥
Based on game play I've seen and visited the discussions board. it is clear this game rarely receives patches, has little in terms of content planned, and has been in a buggy state for several years. Several missions I've played were bugged and not even walkthroughs could help me find them. Key items are not highlighted or stand out enough for me to notice. Even with a sale this game is not worth frustration.
not worth buying, updates are rare with ♥♥♥♥ all content, not worth waiting 3 months for updates of such petty size.
