Emory is an 18 year old noble of Sharan, a wealthy kingdom made even wealthier by Emory's father, an entrepreneur and prolific business man who is the king's aid in finances. As such, Emory is best friends with the king's only child, Cordelian, a 19 year old boy who's being prepped to take over the kingdom. Along with Cordelian, Emory spends their days with Lisia, their personal maid, and Marco, Cordelian's butler. However, Emory's daily, carefree life gets a small wrench in it when they finally meets the princess of a neighboring, rival country, and finds out that Cordelian and her are engaged... Paths Taken is a dating sim visual novel where you play as Emory, a noble of a country on the brink of war. This game is a more relaxed day-to-day experience though, and doesn't feature any action scenes. How will you spend your time? Who will you chose to walk with along your path? Features: 4 love interests (2 female, 2 male) Over 30,000 words Changeable main character name Changeable main character gender and design No locked routes depending on gender Completely free!

I am honestly surprised at myself for continuing to play the game to finish even one route... There are plenty of free VN games out there that are leagues better... The MC is absolutely dense about even some of the simplest of things and as others have said the characters feel wooden and flat.. The world building feels haphazard, using a mix of real world and made up fantasy world elements that don't mix very well. The events that the characters go through throughout the gameplay didn't fit in either. I.E. (spoiler here if you care about that)
A musician group from another country has to leave to go back home because of a war that's starting to brim in their home country... realistically, they would do their damndest to stay AWAY and stay where it's safe!
Getting riled up about this game while leaving the review.. so I'm going to stop here.. Music is nice, but that's the really the only nice thing I feel like I can say about it..
It's rather short, honestly it's a shame because it wasn't all that bad! Sigh the potentials of exploring with the war and noble/worker class life... also I don't mind how it's mixed with some modern technology/ideology in an older time period, a little weird, but not in your face about it. Also I wished they had a gallery so I can have a look at the cg's at least after completing an ending. Oh right, it's not just one plotline with 4 of the characters, they kinda split off, so you have 2 stories to follow depending on which route you went with involving with one of the 2 teams. That was nice. It's nothing deep but some scenes were cute and interesting with the characters. There was some mix ups on the player, like some lines weren't altered and just kept on calling them he/him or sir, despite what sex you picked on. And oh lord, Lady (surname). No really. That's bit a bad look... But honestly, at least we got a game for free! We can't complain too much, no real loss of time and money.
You probably found yourself here, like me, while looking for a romance/lgbtq+ VN. That is... technically what this is. And, hey, it's free! It's got fun stuff like: -interesting concept with fun romance tropes -customize-able name/gender/appearance -4 romance-able characters that aren't locked based on your gender settings -good AND bad endings BUT! If you're going to play this, I'd highly suggest only skimming through dialogue. You won't be missing much-- other a bunch of spelling and grammar mistakes. Out of an hour play-through, the romance/plot only made up about 5 minutes of the game. And honestly, this game felt less like a VN and more like a small talk simulator (with fun topics like weather, politics and event plans, yay!). Now, if a story is good, I don't care much at all about the music or character art.... But, without a good story, it's hard to ignore. The character art is as dull and emotionless as the writing. It's pretty much just one drawing of each character and sometimes they move their eyebrows and mouths, I guess. The backgrounds are just photographs with a weirdly textured blur effect overlay-- and sometimes they don't even fit what the background is supposed to be based on the writing. The music is also in and out at weird times? If you're speed-skimming, however, you won't notice that as much. Overall, play it if you want? Maybe it would be a good use of a car/plane ride, or something. It uses pretty common tropes (arranged marriage, forbidden love, royalty romance, noble x servant), so maybe if you squint, you can just skim it and imagine that they did these tropes better.
