Paragnosia

Paragnosia is a straightforward anomaly-spotting horror game that does not reinvent the genre, but delivers a solid few hours of paranoia for a very reasonable price. You must survive eight rounds by moving a camera through the rooms of an apartment, photographing anomalies, and returning to the safe room before the battery runs out. Missing anomalies removes one of the five locks protecting the door, and those lives do not refill between rounds. The battery rarely felt threatening, even on Nightmare mode, and I wish it drained faster to make moving between rooms more frantic. The game is at its best when it makes you question whether anything has changed at all. I even encountered a round with no anomalies, which made every later round feel more uncertain. The minimal sound design also helps, with some anomalies producing subtle noises and others remaining completely silent. Sudden audio crescendos occasionally raise your heart rate, though I would not consider them traditional jump scares. There is almost no story, and the graphics and art direction are fairly standard for the genre. Anyone looking for a compelling narrative or a particularly distinctive presentation should probably look elsewhere. I also did not encounter any bugs during my playthrough. Finishing the game unlocks Nightmare mode, and beating that can lead to a hidden ending. There are also 100 anomalies to discover, though the overall experience remains relatively short. This is primarily for fans of anomaly games, observation challenges, and short horror experiences. At around four dollars, it offers more than enough entertainment to justify the price.
