Levels are too wide with not a lot going on.
Too many bugs to seriously recommend, even to the biggest fans of the genre Constantly clipping out of the level and dying randomly for no reason at all. Having to reset the chick levels several times due to the camera bugging during orientation swap. Having to reset the chick levels even more because you clip out of the level. The chick levels don't work and constantly need to be reset. I seriously don't know how this content wasn't cut holy. Even if the game had no technical issues at all, the voice acting is cringe at best and the dialogue is even worse. I think they should have gone the Banjo/Kazooie/DK64 route with a simple story and no voice acting, because oh my. The levels are empty, and the hardest challenge the game throws at you is having to reset constantly due to bugs. I was really looking forward to this one but unfortunately its indie untiy early access slop. Did no one playtest this game? and if they did, who gave the go ahead to release it in this state? If I ran into this many problems, I know the developers did as well. We're verging on predatory at that point.
This is one of those games with too much "heart" put into them to leave a negative review for, despite a few deal-breaker issues for me The Good: - The art direction is great. There is a very clear artistic identity and intentionality to the game that I adore - A lot of polish was put into narrative performances and dialogue. It's impressive on one hand, but on the other it feels like polish went to the wrong places, leading us to The Bad - The third person camera is nauseating. It has this accumulating velocity / inertia effect that is dizzying. The auto-camera moves too late and accelerates too fast, making me avoid the auto camera kicking in at all costs. - The player controller feels bad. I might be more tuned into this working on a third person game myself, but the moment to moment act of platforming (and its components like jumping) don't feel good *enough* which is the key word for a platformer; I think this kind of movement would be fine in most types of games but platformers are a different story. Imo, the act of jumping and moving should feel maximally polished and locked in for a platformer Side Notes - Some games to look at for really nice feeling 3rd person auto-follow camera are Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy (one of the pioneers in it as far as I am aware) and the more recent Ratchet and Clank Games (among others) - Great character controllers to study are all of the 3D Mario games, as well as (again lol) Jak and Daxter 1 Ultimately, I can't really play the game much because I genuinely find the camera nauseating and the character controller lacking "snap" that makes platforming enjoyable to me. I think they should have focused more on polishing the raw platforming and character controller, as opposed to the art and voice acting. Those things are nice, but secondary in such a "moment-to-mopment" gameplay focused genre imo. I do however love the artistic intent and would love to see the developer continue to make games.
I couldn’t get into it. I found the dialogue off-putting as it sounds like it’s trying too hard and the poor voice acting didn’t help it. The controls were fine. The only glitch I had was the main character kept falling and falling and I had to restart the game. You can tell love was put into it, but I didn’t care for it.
Pretty good platformer, fairly easy but also a great challenge for any speedrunners and completionists so I'd recommend for sure if you want a nice relaxing 3D platformer.
This is an awesome game, that reminds me of Mario Galaxy, Little Big Planet and more... I cant recommend this game enough for its calming tone, charming characters and wholesome atmosphere.
Too easy
PaperKlay > Donkey Kong Bananza
PaperKlay is a very cute and short 3D platformer game! The movements of the game are pretty cool to play around, overall pretty smooth, although if you try to double jump too fast, you will only get a single one instead, as if it didn't register. Being able to move during the wind up of the ground pound makes for some very cool way to go about the platforming, especially if you combine this with the dodge. The level are cool, espcially liked the second half of the game. There are some moments where nothing really happens though, a little bit unfortunate but it's quite alright. Also some repetitiveness. I also liked the diversity on how each world looked. Concerning the collectathon part, it's alright! there may be many coins in levels but they are usually very visible, if you pay enough attention to them, you rarely finish a level without collecting all of them. The enemies hitboxes are pretty jank, it feels like you hit them from so far away, and when next to you, you somehow completely miss. It's probably the biggest flaw about this game for me. Musics are cool although not all of them vibed with me, but none where bad, fits the vibe of the game overall. Voice acting was pretty cool! Although the way our protagonist talks isn't for me. As for the story, pretty neutral about it, it's kind of the classic whenever it comes to those types of games. Either way, as someone that loves 3D platformers, this was a pretty cool one to play!
